“A well located classic”

We were having second thoughts about this hotel based on a few other reviews, but the location and price seemed right and the hitstory sounded interesting so we booked it and were so glad we did. I can only speak about our room on the third floor toward the back. (Be warned there is someone to carry your luggage but no elevator.) After so many tiny cookie cutter boxes we've stayed in recently, we found the room to be fantastic - huge with very high ceilings, a very modern extra large bathroom, and comfortable bedding. It had all the amenities of some place much more expensive. There was a small cafe across from the check in with late hours and fair prices, and the staff could not have been more helpful. Out the door and three minutes away was The Bund with its iconic promenade.

Room Tip: If you can't do stairs you will need a room on the lowest floor. There is no elevator.

Almost everything about Astor House hotel is perfect -- the location and proximity to the Bund and on a relatively quiet street, the old world feel and history of the hotel, the comfortable and extremely large rooms with small touches, comfortable beds, and an extensive buffet breakfast if you wish. We got a very good deal on the room price on booking.com and were extremely pleased with our stay.

Two things-- depending on the room, there is no lift to the 2nd or 3rd floors. The wi-fi in the lobby was pretty annoying, but was the only drawback.

I accepted a paid upgrade on arrival and was glad I did. The apartment was very roomy. A long hallway to the dining room with a further reception room which looks out onto what the locals refer to as the creek but is the river that runs along the Bund. The timber floors are original and you can hear people walking on the floor above but it didn't worry me.

The bathroom was recently upgraded and everything worked well.

This is a 3 star hotel not 5 and much of the furniture is repro but I loved it. Even though the Bund is not always the most convenient area to stay in Shanghai this hotel is such a blast I look forward to going back there.

This is a beautiful hotel, in a great location and a pleasure to stay at. If you like 19th century history, lovely big rooms and to be reasonably close to the city's attractions then this is THE place to be. We arrived late (1.00am) due to flight delays and in not too good humour after clearing immigration and a long taxi ride but the staff were so helpful and the room so nice all our cares seemed to melt away. It is very reasonably priced and only a short walk to the famous Bund area. It is a 10-15 pleasant walk to Nanjing Street and the metro (Line 2). The Metro was reasonably easy to navigate for first timers like us. The room itself is huge and has a desk and WiFi. We were in the executive rooms on level two (as a free upgrade apparently) but I am sure all the rooms would be just as charming. There is some traffic noise from a busy city road not far off but we didn't find it too intrusive. I haven't been to anywhere else in Shanghai but I wouldn't hesitate to come back here.

Room Tip: Ask for an executive room on level two.

A charming hotel at the beginning of the Bund, just at the other side of the river, Wonderfull views ( if you have the right room ). It is clean, has a very active, helpfull staff, and offers modern equiped complete rooms. The hotel still breathes a bit the atmosphere from the time it was built. It has a wonderfull hall, The Peacock Hall, now being used to serve breakfast and a breakfast is being served for everyone, Chinese or Western.

Room Tip: Roomks that overlook the city financial centre

This well preserved hotel is situated a short walk across a bridge from the Bund, making it's location perfect for a nightly stroll. We had two deluxe rooms and they were very spacious, there was only wi-fi in the lobby unless you upgraded your room type. The breakfast was 78 rmb for the buffet (it was very nice but quite expensive). There is plenty of memorabilia within the hotel and a stroll along the vast corridors is really interesting.

This was our treat for our family trip and was not disappointed. Building oozes character and stories from the past. We had 2 large spacious, comfortable well appointed dux twin rooms in keeping with the building design with modern bathroom.
Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was not the best we ever had but the setting in the Peacock room made up any shortfall.
Easy walk to the top of the Bund and 15-20 minute walk to Metro (East Nanjing Rd - Line 2) but metered taxis are inexpensive for travel further a field.
