“Not worth the money”
Reviewed 18 April 2014 via mobile

The hotel has a great atmosphere, the rooms are comfortable. A very authentic place. However, if you like to have a relaxed breakfast, there are far better places to stay at. The breakfast choice is not extensive, and the service poor. We had wait long time for a coffee, that was not even tasty. And at the end decided to have breakfast elsewhere. Overall not worth the money.

This historic hotel is five minutes away fron The Bund and other attractions. When we arrived we were offered an upgrade to the exceutive floor for a small addition. The room was beatiful and very very big with a king size bed, a desk and armchairs and a large bathroom.
There was always at least one english speaker at the front desk, very patient and helpful.
During our stay the wifi wasn't functioning well but it could have been a temporary problem. I don't know.

Nice hotel, not modern but satisfactory. We stayed on the executive floor for 4 nights. Service was ok. Wifi doesn't work very well. Comfortable beds. Breakfast is ok. The location is GREAT! So close to the Bund...

We have stayed for 5 nights at this hotel. Location of hotel is perfect ( very near to bund and Nanjing street). You will Sleep in a very old hotel that Einstein and Chaplin had been there before. We had a very good time there with my family. Room was very big and cleanliness was OK. We liked their breakfast. Finally I recommend this hotel for both of business and family travelers.

I relly liked this hotel and it is certainly one of the best that I have stayed with in China. My room was also excellent and vert well furnished. We were upgraded (with little fush) at no extra cost since the room type we booked was not available. The history of this place is amazing and the furnishing and overall appearance is great.

There were however a few negatve things I noticed. The cleaning was not perfect, not bad, just not great if you looked a little under the surface. Internet was slow. The main shower head was rather blocked (although the handheld one was fine and of good quality). Also some of the english tranlatied text in the hotel information, signs and the amazing historical artifacts were rather bad. Finally some of the staff did not seem all that interested in helping or answering questions that were perhaps a little outside of their expertise.

Overall a very pleasant stay but the place can be made perfect with just a few adjustments.

I visited Shanghai for the second time in 30+ years in March 2014 so this was a bit of a trip down memory lane, and I booked in here for two nights - LOVED IT - fantastic location l o c a t i o n LOCATION and I paid for a room upgrade on arrival and it was the best money I'd spent on the whole trip.
Amazing view of the bridge, rivers and Bund, great room and breakfast and great value for money - I'm planning on returning to Shanghai in January and hope to rebook at this hotel.
It's not flash and pristine but it's so historical and exotic I was much more memorable than many of the expensive hotels..... and I didn't have a problem with street noise as some have encountered, the double glazing on the windows cut out any noise.Recommend!
It's an old hotel so don't expect miracles, but you can expect a stay worth remembering, and the tailor in the foyer made me a couple of excellent shirts!

Room Tip: Pay for a room upgrade on arrival!

During March 2014 we were booked into this hotel by our China tour travel agent; the tour purchased was billed as 'deluxe'. A huge mistake; the first room provided was a rat-hole on the sixth floor with a tiny window opening to a tar covered parapet. After contacting and complaining to the travel agent, we were moved to a room on the 'executive' floor (second) overlooking the street; quite a bit larger room and with a bathroom that did not require one to close the door to use the toilet. Still, a mediocre property badly in need of renovation of the public areas. The breakfast buffet was pathetic (the coffee serving pots were encrusted with old burnt coffee); the front desk staff was surly and rude; the ‘free’ Internet Wi-Fi didn’t pass any data (attempted over several days and several locations). Only redeeming attribute was the location; otherwise stay away. Also note that in China at this time of year, air conditioning is not allowed and windows must be opened to provide any cooling; even in five star hotels.
