“Ideal for a few days stay in Shanghai”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 March 2014 via mobile

I was definitely drawn in by the 'old-China' exterior and it was a lovely, comfortable hotel with nice rooms. However, a few negatives of note were:
1) Internet connection is bad, sometimes the wifi would just refuse to work which can be infuriating.
2) don't share a room with someone who you are not in a relationship with because the bathroom situation will be awkward. There is a glass window between the bedroom and the bathroom and there is a haphazard wooden blind which is an attempt at privacy which doesn't work. If you're in the bedroom you can full see anyone in the shower or on the toilet and vice versa so just be careful if that if you're with a 'platonic friend'.
3) lastly, I felt the rooms were kept really clean however when I was leaving and packing up my suitcase, I did the usual once-round, checked under the bed and found a dirty, old baby's bottle! So glad I only saw it as I was checking out otherwise it wouldn't have slept for fear of being in the middle of a horror movie!
4) no hotel bar!

His in said that, the location is absolutely ideal. Staff were very helpful and their English was okay! Would definitely recommend for a few days stay in Shanghai.

We spent 2 nights here in March 2014 - our first 2 nights of 14 in China having booked the Hotel ourselves on Hotel.com.

The location is great for accessing the Metro system - virtually next to Dashijie subway station.

The entrance is a bit odd - reception is on the first floor (But there is a lift from ground level). Staff spoke passable English - and were efficient. Not overly friendly but par for the course we were to find out.

The room was great - free safe - good reliable wifi - nice bed - loads of TV channels (at least one English one). The shower, apart from being incredibly complicated was lovely. All in all very difficult to fault the place. We were up early and back late so didn't spend much time here but for what we paid this place did the job extremely well (Didn't have breakfast so can't comment on that aspect). Would recommend.

Its the hotel beside the MRT Dashijie subway station (line 8 blue) that really attracted us to booked in that hotel, just about 50 meters over the corner, it is also know as the YMCA of Shanghai. There's a lot of restaurant at the back street with varieties of food being served. Only draw back was its lobby and reception area was in the 2nd floor, since its an old building that was renovated. Also my partner was complaining about the bed, which was not soft enough that he feels back pain when he wake up.

Located right across the vast green area of People's Square, Concert hall and Yanzhong Square Park, which resembles the Central Park atmosphere in NYC. The hotel building is historic and quite attractive, retaining the classic western-chinese mixture look.

The room was clean, but the shower booth floor had stains all over, which I was already aware by reading other Tripadvisor reviewers' reports.

The breakfast was OK, haven't tried the room service as they close quite early, so I had to walk to nearby convenience stores to buy some noodles. (And if you miss Starbucks, there are two nearby the hotel so rest assured)

I stayed here for 2 days on business. It was nicely located with decent rooms that were clean and quiet. It's relatively central and right around the corner from the metro as well as some restaurants. I couldn't ask for more, especially for the price. Would stay here again!

Room Tip: I asked for a quiet room and got one in the back. The front may be more noisy as it's a major ro...

We stayed at the Marvel from Jan 27th to Feb 2nd. The room was very modern, well looked after and the hallways had a nice scent to it. The only thing I would say is if you're not a couple, it would be awkward as the shower/bathroom has a see through window from your bed. The staff at the front desk was great, they helped us with where to go, and helped us translate Mandarin on some of the tours we booked through Ctrip. The location is great as we can walk out and find local food behind and around the hotel. it is only a few blocks from Nanjing East Road and the Bund. Taxis are also cheap to hop on, if you want to go to Yu Garden.
FYI, there is no pool at this hotel.

Comfortable old-style hotel -- former rather grand YMCA building -- superbly situated within walking distance of much of central Shanghai. Directly above Dashijie metro station. For the price and position, the rooms and lobby are quite grand and spacious and distinctly old fashioned, from a long gone colonial era.
