“Old Grand Dame”
Reviewed 24 September 2012

This hotel was built in the 1930's when Shanghai has not many high rise yet. This bland imposing building , brownish in color is situated on the northern part of the Bund, near the river called Suzhou creek and opposite the very old Baidazu bridge - possibly the oldest steel bridge in Shanghai. While i was here i saw many newly wed Chinese couples have their shots taken on this bridge. The decor of the numerous restaurants in the hotel looks grand and cosy.
The service esp the bell boys is superb, ever helpful and they are very well dressed and polite.
We stayed on the 9th floor and our room is facing the river with a bit of Pudong view. Just below we can see the Suzhou creek, Baidazu Bridge and the Bund. It just take 5 mins to walk to the Bund and Nanjing Road , where its the road for shopping. The Nanjing East subway station is also nearby. In fact the best way to travel in Shanghai is by subway and its so cheap,we used it in most of our stay in Shanghai.

Room Tip: Rooms in the higher floors facing Pudong has the best views.

Definitely 4 star hotel. Quick walk to the Bund, excellent location. Hotel rooms large for China, comfortable king size bed, free wifi in lobby, we had great room with river views and was $137 pn.

Staff were efficient, most spoke English, room was clean and bright. There was so some mould in bathroom but overall very clean. Highly recommend.

Room Tip: Definitely ask for river view room

We stayed in this hotel after reading reviews, however, the most valuable comment was to get a room with a river view. These rooms cost a bit more but are absolutely worth the extra money. Our room was a good size, very nicely appointed and the views were just to die for, especially at night when the bridge, buildings along the river and even the river boats were all lit up. Early in the morning we opened our curtains to see kites being flown from the embankment and watch the shipping movements up and down the river. There was a wide selection of delicious food available in the buffet breakfast and the staff were very helpful in allowing us to start prior to their opening time on our last morning, when we had an early flight. Although the hotel isn't new it's very clean and comfortable, in a very good location on the Bund, with the main shopping area just a short taxi drive away. We enjoyed walks to the nearby shops and sights and found plenty of places to eat locally. On our departure we took a taxi from the hotel to the station to catch the Maglev to the airport. Hotel staff were keen for us to take a taxi directly to the airport, advising that it would take too much time, however, we found just the opposite. The taxi driver was great and drove quickly to the station and buying a ticket was easy. The train wasn't crowded and on arrival at the airport there was a bit of a walk to the terminal but signage was very clear. It's well worth the experience and we wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

Room Tip: Most definitely get a room with a river view. Rooms on the other side of the hotel have a view over...

Best place to stay in Shanghai on a budget! You feel like a queen on a pauper budget! Hotel is walking distance to everything and even found a convenience store around the corner! Views of city were unbelievable and staff super friendly. Daily breakfast was great with tons of variety! Money exchange machine in lobby worked perfect and rate was even better than at a bank which was surprising.

Room Tip: Higher the floor the better! We were on 12th floor corner room so had windows on 2 sides which was...

We stayed here as part of a package deal during our two week tour of China. The hotel is very distinctive with an interesting history, going back to the 1930s.
We were really impressed with the place and it certainly has an enviable location at one end of The Bund. Our view looked out over a canal where you can see some of the old architecture as well as the stunningly new buildings in Shanghai. Not everyone in our group had a good view from their room, so I guess it depends on luck or how much you pay if you book independently in advance.
The room was spacious and tastefully furnished, although the beds were a little on the hard side. The bathroom could have used some 're-grouting' in places but everywhere was clean. We used the 'English Pub' style bar one evening which was fine, although there are other ( less overpriced) bars nearby.
There are numerous shops, restaurants and services within the hotel. The staff were always courteous and helpful. The buffet breakfast was plentiful.
Despite some of the negative reviews of this hotel, we felt it was very good and would recommend it to other travellers.

I got a great deal on my room for this hotel so it was much classier than I am used to. The hotel has an interesting history. It was built in the 1930s as an American-style high rise apartment building and was occupied by the Japanese during WWII and by the Americans post-WWII. My room still had the original oil heater from when the hotel was built (I presume it was there for historical reasons, and non-operational).

The location is at the northern end of the Bund. Pretty much the ideal location for a visit to Shanghai.

The room was spacious, with a huge bathroom, huge bed and posh furniture - overall, very comfortable. The view wasn't fantastic, but this was because I opted for the cheaper room with the "city" view. As the hotel is located at the top of the Bund, I presume the river view rooms would have a spectacular view at night.

The staff were fairly helpful. I used the concierge service to book tickets to an acrobat show (highly recommend this show, BTW), also train tickets to Suzhou. The wifi in the lobby was not fast, but still functional. It was annoying having to get the password from the front desk every time I wanted to use wifi in the lobby.

Overall, I enjoyed my stay. Not the most modern of hotels, but very comfortable and in an ideal location.
