“Decidedly mixed!”
Reviewed 26 August 2014

Older style (low-rise in comparison with most Shanghai hotels) in a good central location for those not needing to be near The Bund.
Clean, large rooms with all the facilities you'd perhaps expect of a 4* hotel (so good) but, some niggles too:
Check-in at reception borders on the chaotic at busy times, the lounge lacks any real soul (although staff are very helpful and polite) and breakfast (particularly unimpressive for Westerners) is simply a bun-fight when it comes to securing a table.
My tip: Plenty of good, reasonably-priced eateries within walking distance of the hotel...and some good bars too.
Conclusion: An OK hotel, a bit underwhelming, there are probably better places to stay but...if you're price-conscious, it does offer extremely good value for money.

the hotel is nice , only 2 floors of non smoking rooms, but the first room smelled very bad although on the non smoking floor, the new one was better.

the rooms are OK .

Art Deco styling in this 1935 hotel, the executive wing has been updated and although our room 4005 was small, the decor and bathroom were relatively new. Cleaning service was of a good standard and the staff were more friendly than any place we have stayed in China.
There is a large park across the street with tai chi and dancers particularly early evening. Plenty of restaurants within walking distance. Also metro lines close by.
The French Concession area is quite interesting, small boutique shops and tree lined streets are nice to walk around.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the park have the best view but can be affected by traffic noise. Executive floor has m...

The hotel has long history dating back to 1930s, thus the room condition is a little outdated and a bit gloomy. Overall services are maintained at good level and the morning buffer is excellent. The location is very convenient from where you may find various bars, restaurants just within walking distance.

This was arranged by a contact of mine in Shanghai at a very good price. The room was a large corner room with views out over the park opposite and the tree lined street. The super king bed was very comfortable although the air conditioning seemed to be uncontrollable even though there were two control points neither of which could change the temperature. We chose to leave the AC off and keep the windows open but that was noisy as the locals live on their horns. As we were there in May it was not too hot but it could be bad if it were in the middle of summer.

Walking to the left from the hotel quickly bought you to all sorts of facilities such as banks, ATM machines, hairdressers, restaurants, bars and the metro station. The neighbourhood was as if being in Paris with plane trees lining the wide street which were lit up at night making a real picture. Walking to the right eventually bought you to a great bottle shop for wines and another choice of restaurants including an irish bar with sports TV.

My wife had a hair treatment at the place across the road from the hotel which was superb. They had all the mod cons for women's beauty including manicures and pedicures in a large complex well decorated and it even had a bar for the bored partners to while away the time waiting.

The breakfast was included in the hotel price and was extensive catering to both western and chinese tastes. A chef was on hand to prepare the egg dishes while you watched.

The staff were all very pleasant and helpful especially the doormen and bellman who found us a tailor just across the road for some alterations at a great price.

A five minute stroll to the left go you to the underground system which was super clean and efficient and easy to understand and use.

Room Tip: Try and get a corner room. Much more space.

I usually stay at the Hengshan Picardie when in Shanghai due to its location. It is right in the middle of the French Concession area close to plenty of restaurants and bars. The Bund is easily reachable by taxi and since the Expo there is also an Underground nearby. The rooms are nice and cosy but the rest of the hotel is your typical chinese government owned style. The breakfast can be easily given a miss and the staff is mostly pretty useless. Little english and prelearned phrases only.

This is an older traditional hotel that is nicely decorated and equipped. My king-size bed and room were very comfortable. The room was somewhat small but well met my needs. The staff was friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet was very good, with primarily Western-style food including omelets made while you wait but also includes some Chinese choices. There are bars and restaurants o the street to the left out the front door. My room included fast a reliable Wi-Fi at no additional cost.
