Magnificent International Plaza Hotel

I found this hotel on the net and booked it mainly due to the location, right in the middle of Tibet Rd (Xizang South Rd), which is less then 5 minutes stroll to Hua Hai Rd and another 5 minutes on straight up the road to Peoples Sq.
Rooms are moderate and look like any Ramada hotel you would find anywhere, the hotel is managed my the same people as the Ramada in HK, so fits the mould.
The hotel might indicate it's 'international', but comes across more Chinese, hard beds, only a couple of non smoking floors, thousands of Chinese cable channels but just a few English language ones.
Rooms are in reasonable condition, carpets a bit worn but furnishings new. Corridors are dark with wood panelling and carpets appear worn.
The location steals the show for me, so close to everything, nice little antique shopping street across the road, Yu gardens and Xintiandi are walking distance.
I booked with the hotel and rates for a single room were around $70AUD, cheaper than the much nicer Howard Johnson Hua Hai Rd, with a location on par.

Our experience was not satisfactory. We stayed for 2 nights 3 days in hotel & I wonder how this hotel got a 3* rating. The towels in bathroom were torn on all days. The Receptionist are NOT at all helpful. They just do not wish to answer any queries about transportation in Shanghai. The stanard reply is take a Taxi. We ourselves found the bus & metro routes to various places in Shanghai. Breakfast menu is same & the interior seems to be decades old.
However location is good as it is very near Hua hai road & nanjing pedestrian street

I've actually stayed here twice now. I live in Suzhou about 1 hour away from Shanghai and have stayed in 5 hotels in Shanghai, and this along with the Howard Johnson at Huaihai Lu would be my two picks.

It's quite cheap and the location is great - it may not appear so at first, but trust me. You can walk to nearly all major Shanghai locations - the old city about 10 minutes away, Xintiandi (coffee shops etc) about 10 minutes walk, Huaihai Lu about 5 minutes walk, and People's Square and Nanjing Rd (if that's your thing) about 10-15 minutes walk. But the hotel is also opposite a great antiques street market and right beside a bird and insect market, which is great fun to see. It's also smack in the middle of some old style Shanghai housing, and street food etc is close by. A metro stop was added in late Dec 2007 but the staff at the reception are still seemingly becoming aware of this?

A bad point about the hotel would be the very basic breakfast - a buffet that has bread, cereal, chinese food, some hot food (though often luke warm) and fake juice. Its passable, but certainly not the best hotel breakfast I've ever had.

The rooms are big, and feel about 15 years old, but clean and suitable enough.

By the way, the address listed on Trip Advisor is slightly wrong - it is Xizang (XiZang) which means Tibet in Chinese - not Xi Zhang...

Location: Near Huai Hai road (whole shopping stretch)...just two blocks away from the hotel.
Check in: no problem.
Asking for extension: Huge problem
People/Receptionist: NOT HELPFUL AT ALL. (except for the bellboy - who got a huge tip from us for being so helpful from the very start of our stay...)
Price: Reasonable.
Breakfast: so-so...same food everyday, buffet style, except for one to two dish changing every other day or every two days.

We got a taxi going from the airport to the hotel around 100RMB.

We arrived late at night, we were greeted by the friendly bell-boy (who we think is the friendliest person in the hotel)...

When we were asking for an extension on your stay in the hotel...do you know what the guy at the reception told us - "no, cannot" - "only book online" - that made our trip tumble down...this hotel is not that magnificent at all...

Of course, me and my friends being in a foreign land started to panicked because why can we not extend our stay here? We are willing to pay in CASH if they don't accept credit card...they also have a the walk-in rate posted on their reception hall... SO WHY not let us extend our stay??? We don't want to walk the city of Shanghai with all our stuff...we don't want to be homeless...

So for the rest of the night, before our last night in that hotel, we went to the business center (thank god it is free and opened 24/7), we booked ourselves to another BETTER hotel.
