We've just got back from a 9 night trip to Shanghai and had a great stay at the New World Hotel.
We upgraded to the residence club for 378RMB a night which included a room on the 35th floor with Elemis Toiletries, free wifi and a bathtub. The residence club on the 38th floor is a superb facility and you can have a buffet breakfast with a selection of Chinese and Western food plus a handful of a la carte items. You can also use it through the day for coffees and soft drinks plus between 5.30 and 7.30 there is free alcohol where you can help yourself to beer, wine, prosecco and a selection of spirits, plus a good selection of food including sushi, sandwiches, salads, fried rice and a Chinese main which changes each night, plus some really good desserts. The club itself has a great view across Shanghai, is really well set out and also has a games room with a pool table.
The hotel is well located for line 2 on the metro and the side exit of the hotel is almost next door to the one of the entrances to the metro, there is a 5 minute walk to the actual line but there are shops on the way and a Bank of China ATM which I think is the closest ATM to the hotel. You can also cut through the department store next to the metro entrance and use their escalators if you don't want to walk up the steps. This is one of the best things about the hotel as although the hotel is situated away from the main sights it is just a few stops from Jingan Temple, West Nanjing Road, Peoples Square and the stations either side of the river. It is also the line which goes to both airports, Pudong and Hongqiao. There are also plenty of shops and restaurants around the hotel but we'd recommend the hotel restaurant Yue 1525, particularly the dimsum afternoon tea from 2.30 to 4.30. Also a trendy bar in the ground floor which seemed popular with residents and locals.
The bedrooms are very modern with Flatscreen TVs with CNN, BBC World, 2 English film channels and a channel which shows live Premier League football. Our bathroom had a glass wall so you could sit in the bath and watch the TV and the sound came through a speaker in the ceiling. There is also a room safe, mini bar, ironing stuff and nespresso machine plus a kettle. The only issue we had was that there wasn't enough storage space for our clothes but we did take a lot with us and I suspect unlike us, others are only there for a couple of nights so should be fine for most people. The beds were ultra comfortable and probably the best nights sleep I have had anywhere.
There is a rooftop pool and a gym which we didn't get time to use.
There is a good mix of business people and people on vacation. Lufthansa also appear to use it for their layovers.
Finally what made this stay for us were the people, all the staff are really helpful and nothing seemed too much trouble. A special mention for Jason who was brilliant, he gave us advice on restaurants, sightseeing, looked after us in the Residence Club and also sorted out a great foot massage at a place just down the road.
We would absolutely recommend this hotel, this was also our first visit to China so we were a bit apprehensive but the warm welcome we got quickly dispelled any worries we may have had.
