I was in Shanghai on the end of March 2012, and I stays at Pacific hotel in Nanjing Lu, near the Peoples Park.
The hotel is located near exit No 8 of the Peoples Park Metro station.
Next to the hotel is a nice attraction, that is the Madame Tussould Wax museum.

The hotel is Old, where you have to walk up two flights of stairs before getting into an unpowered rotary door where you have to push the door (while dragging your suitcases).
The receptions speaks pretty good English.

I was given a room where all the views I got from the windows is a brick wall from a neighboring building.
The floor of the room is in timber, and the toilet floor is faux granite.
The room is a tad dark even with all the lighting on.

Facility of the hotel include ironing board and an iron, perfect because I need to iron my clothings for meetings.

Located just by the heart of the city, this famous hotel has surprisingly fair pricing for their rooms. Which are big, clean and as good as in any five star hotel. Only one little negative thing; the building itself is so old that noise insulation is not best but everything else covers that up nicely.

I've stayed at this hotel previously, and returned again due to its convenient location right across from People's Square in central Shanghai. It's one of the oldest hotels in the city, so there's a charm to it that's missing from the more upscale trendy neighbors. But it could use a thorough reburfishment without losing that charm. The room was spacious and facilities were adequate, though the A/C did not seem to work very well. The staff is modestly friendly and helpful, though their English is limited. The location is ideal, as it's located right on the main subway line, and is a stone's throw from the beginning of the Nanjing Road pedestrian street. Unfortunately, the downside of having this ideal location is that you are constantly being hit on by hustlers as soon as you step out of the hotel trying to sell you watches, bags, companions, etc. This can get tiresome very quickly, but it seems to be the culture here, so you just have to learn to get used to it.

Room Tip: I paid a slightly higher price for a deluxe room with a view, and it was well worth it. The room was...

Paid 50$/night thru Expedia for room with 2 double beds, 9 nites. Beds comfortable, sheets clean. Bathroom tiles could use a good scrub. Excellent location with metro across a fairly quiet street, close to some nice walking areas with trees. 10 min walk to Bread Talk bakery, Starbucks, Haagen Daaz and tons of shopping, although shopping in this area can be mentally exhausting. Taxis easily available starting at 14 RMB, for under 20 RMB will get you to most places within city center. You will need your destination written in Chinese.Taxi from Pudong Airport was 170 RMB. Note there are no seatbelts in backseats of taxis, only front passenger.Asked for non smoking room, but people still smoked in hallways. Lounge can be smokey as well. Ordered breakfast room service, which was a let down, and took a while to explain to operator. No WIFI in rooms, signal available in bar/lounge. TV had a couple of English channels, HBO movie channel, BBC news. If you are only staying a couple of nights I would stay elsewhere with a good breakfast to get you going in the morning, for the budget traveller with no high expectations and do not mind smoke or worn around the edges, this will be an ok choice.

That sums it up... We were here for only one night, and needed to be near the city with good metro connections. We paid US$80 per room which was a little steep, but the location was perfect.
The two major metro lines are right outside. The rooms are fine but a bit tired, and service is sufficient but a bit rude for the price. Also no free wifi, only in the bar with an overpriced drink- come on to the 21st century... Still the location is right and the rooms clean, just don't expect too much...

This hotel is very close to People park where many museum and art gallery is located.the night market is also about 15 minutes walk.the architecture is like an old colonial building but build new. Some corner are bit run down but hey this is shanghai thats kind of thing is more an attraction then a negative part :) . Many food stall in the back of the building, very cheap street food but clean and good. I try some noodle with mince meat just taste as good as in the five star hotel. :) . The value is very good for hotel that in the great location. Inside the room is ok also, just close the window and you dont hear anything from the street.

Room Tip: One facing people park always good for shanghai night scape

The first thing that attracts you to the hotel is its location. Its right in the centre of Shanghai and walking distance to Nanjing Lu.
The Hotel has an attractive facade, old colonial style building which is quite nice.
However the rooms need some refurbishment. The paint on the wall is old which can certainly be improved by the hotel.
Overall the hotel is good for its location rather than the facilities it provides!!
