“Jianguo Redux”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 September 2013

I had stayed here several times in the past and I had written a previous review that was not "terrible" but less than stellar. I'm quite pleased to report that things have improved significantly since my last stay. I'm still there actually, but wanted to write another review before I left. The internet signal is much better, actually my best hotel experience so far.

The lobby restaurant is as good as always, though edging up a bit in price. There is a promo in the room though for the Japanese seafood buffet at 20% off for guests. I think its 168 or 188rmb. Might try it tonight.

Staff courteous and attentive, and now there's a spa on the 5th floor, which is always nice to have, though a bit pricy, its typical for hotel pricing. The room itself at about $70USD is very well priced. There are smaller/cheaper options as well.

The location can almost not be beat for both subway and taxi transport, great restaurants and shopping outside your door, all ala the grand experience of Shanghai!!!

If you like your personal belongings to be sorted through & you'd like to be stolen from, this is the hotel for you. Assuming it was housekeeping, as i don't think any other staff members had access to the room. If you are staying here, LOCK YOUR SUITCASE BEFORE LEAVING FOR THE DAY! Really disappointed about the theft, as the everything else about the hotel was good.

Already had two whole week experiences in this hotel in the past two years and would definitely recommend it. Quite convenient as it is at walking distance from business locations, shopping malls and excelent restaurants. Bar, breakfast and convenience services excel some of other similar options in Shanghai. Quiet and restful nights, helpful staff.

Room Tip: Always stayed at the 18th floor - can't be sure about other floors, but wifi coverage ranges fro...

I don't know why I liked this hotel - it is neither spacious, nor newly built. But somehow everything is in its place. Location is perfect, by taxi you can reach most central areas within 15-30 minutes. Nearby there are a lot of shopping malls, where you can disappear for the whole day. Hotel breakfast is well adjusted to Japanese and western taste. Room service is friendly and really take care of you. Rooms as well as bathroom are a bit old in interior design, but clean and pleasant to use.

Approx 40 min drive to Pudong Airport, located close to the Xujiahui Metro Station - Exit2, a Catholic Church as well as a few shopping centers and restaurants, the Jianguo is a great place to stay in Shanghai. Special check in in the 23rd Floor, separate breakfast room on 3rd Floor and Happy Hour between 5 and 7PM for Business guests.
The rooms are clean, the service speak English. Only a Bar, like in the Jianguo in Beijing is missing ..... anyhow, always again

Jianguo is a comfortable hotel located in a excellent part of the city. It is conveniently located close to a myriad of shops and restaurants and the subway entrance. We only stayed one night, but would definitely return!

Room Tip: Rooms with double beds include a coach - which can sleep a third person.

I like this hotel! Really I do. That's the frustrating part. The more I stay there, the less I like it, and I really want to like it. Firstly, the location is very good, right in a main (and one of the best) shopping area (Xujiahui), walking distance from the foreigner's version of an entertainment area (Xin Tian Di) and literally steps away from a subway station. Most of what you may want to do is in easy reach (although Shanghai traffic is another matter).
As far as the hotel though, it looks great, clean, crisp, understated design (it is Japanese you know). When you look a bit closer, it shows wear, but nothing terrible. For me, the first "challenge" came when I upgraded to a business room. One would think the internet would work better or at least the same. Oops, bad assumption. As this touts itself to be a business class hotel, connectivity is quite important. I found myself going down to the lobby to try to get a signal, which sometimes worked, sometimes didn't. Seemingly no understand or help could be obtained from the staff. Disappointing. Yes I know I"m in China, but have found other 4 or 4+ star hotels better able to either help or at least understand.

The rooms are simple, but clean and good. Security is good outside the hotel (at least the first 50 feet), though inside is another matter. There seems to be an network of spa services that exists... Cameras would certainly detect the cloak and dagger "marketing" as your elevator might be stopped to hand you a brochure from a giggling.... uh person, so I have to assume that management condones.

A nice restaurant offering a daily buffet of everything from sushi to french pastries, along with a good quality bar and several other restaurants round out the offerings. If you can get a competitive rate, its a good place, just don't expect great!
