Yuyuan garden is a famous attraction there...you can take metro till yuyuan garden (line 10 ). I like to spend my time not in the garden..because it's very expensive..I like to see/enjoy my time to walk and see in the other stores besides yuyuan garden.. There are many large buildings there..and you can enter and find cheaper than in the garden..

This was the best attraction on my visit to Shanghai. It reminded me so much of the old movies I have watched about the city and kungfu fighting. The architecture is beautiful and there is lots to see and buy. It was rather crowded when I visited, so I don't know if the traffic of people ever quiets down. Wear comfortable shoes and take a camera with as there are lots of ponds, waterways and koi fish swimming around.

The YU TUAN garden is one of the most beautiful gardens I have ever been to. The tranquility and peace is unbelievable. The garden was layed out by a government official for his parents to enjoy in their old age...what a delightful sentiment! It's in the middle of a vibrant city teaming with so many people that it's hard to believe that there exists this oasis of peace and quiet!

We enjoyed the gardens with all the greenery, ponds and rock formations. You have to pay to enter, but it's not that much -- I think maybe $40 USD per person, but I can't remember exactly. The gardens are sort of like a maze. The gardens are surrounded by a shopping area much like Nanjing Lu, but with less high end shops. FYI, finding the gardens through the shopping area and finding your way out can be a little bit tricky.

If you are in Shanghai on business and want a green break from the business center, this is the place to go. Lush gardens and flowing ponds stocked with fish eager to be fed. However, because it is a popular attraction, it can be very crowded. If you have extra time, I would suggest walking through the local hutong nearby before it is gone, for a taste of the culture.
If you have an extra day in your schedule, consider taking the train to Suzhou (about an hour) to see some gardens that are just as impressive and much less crowded. I preferred the Lions' Gate and the Humble Administrator's Garden (both World Heritage sites) to the Yu Yuan gardens in Shanghai. If you have the time it is definitely worth it.
