This site is so cheap to enter that we decided to give it a try and I’m so glad we did. It’s classic China of old in that it’s what you imagine when you think of China. The classic buildings, ornamental dragons and water gardens with rock garden areas. Gorgeous covered walkways and koi in all the pools. It’s just lovely and really romantic too.
There are lovely shops dotted here and there also with really great gift options.

It's a lovely place to see, in the middle of a modern city... old fashion buldinds next to big towers in the back ground! 40 rmb (up to 60 rmb during celebration weeks). Don't buy anything in the shops arounds : the quality is terrible ( if you really want something : bargain A LOT !!!). Very nice stones can be bought inside the Yu Garden ( you can engrave with your name or a chinese caracter) for a neckless or key holder

With one free day left on a SNA Panda China Discovery tour I took a taxi to the Yu Garden which our tour guide had not even bothered to mention. This garden was the absolute highlight of what was an extremely disappointing tour. At only 40¥ entry fee it was the best money I spent on tour. I did not expect to see so many wonderful Chinese Garden rooms in central Shanghai and I was completely blown away by the beauty of the gardens. It is a photographer's Nirvana even for an amateur like me who just points and shoots. The many gardens featured varying designs and there were plenty of places to rest and take in the scenery.

I suggest you spend 1-2 hours and even bring a packed lunch and drink. The entry via the market area is to be avoided if possible as there is a narrow 6 foot wide bridge that is thronged with people most of whom will not be in the garden.

Fabulous.

This is a must see. The gardens include many ponds, bridges and historic buildings. Makes you feel like you have walked into ancient past.
