I stayed at the Mandarin Oriental for a few nights on a special trip with my wife. We wanted to explore Shanghai, which I knew only from business, and which she hadn't visited. We wanted somewhere wonderful to stay, and we found it at the Mandarin Oriental.
This is an outstanding hotel that delivers on the Mandarin Oriental service and attention to detail ethos in almost every way. I say almost, because we had a couple of minor glitches on arrival, but these just created the opportunity for the management to respond instantly and put them right, and more, and for that we were impressed.
The hotel is very modern, but luxuriously appointed in typically understated Mandarin Oriental style. The service is perfect - friendly, helpful but almost instantaneous. The manager and the concierges were helpful, and gave us good advice for getting around, booked tickets, made reservations and more.
Even the staff in the bar were friendly and chatty, which was interesting.
The hotel had a local area car that would just take us to places nearby, like the station or the shopping centres down the road.
The hotel is situated in a slightly remote location in Pudong - a good 10-15 minute walk from the nearest tube station, and in an area that was completely dead at the weekend, because it is essentially a business district, so if you want the humming vibe of Shanghai, this isn't the place. But if you're after an oasis to relax after a long day at work or exploring, this hotel is hard to match.
