This was one of the more expensive things we did in Shanghai. At several places we did not have to pay for our daughter (because she is under 1.3 meters) but at the aquarium we did. It is VERY clean, the exhibits are well maintained and the layout is easy to navigate. Most of the signage is also in english, but any videos or movies are only in chinese. The best features were the Spa Fish, escalator that descends down into a fish tank, and the moving walk way on the bottom floor. While on the walkway, you go through several different tanks and see some amazing fish and sea life. We saw a diver feeding the rays and sharks which our daughter (age 6) loved! We also enjoyed the glowing jellyfish tanks that are lit with black light. We were able to see most of the exhibits in 1/2 of a day and enjoyed the aquarium. It is also easy to get to via the subway and there is a cab stand just outside the front doors.

I felt that the ticket price was a bit expensive for what it has to offer. During the holiday season, it can get VERY crowded. They've tried to make it less crowded but with it being at the the tourist location in Shanghai (already crowded as it is), it didn't help much. Like most other big-scale aquariums, you follow a path. The highlight is, of course, the tunnel. Maybe it was just on the day I visited but I found that the glass looked dirty. If you don't focus, it looks magnificent, but if you pay attention to the little details, you might be disappointed. If you have young children, it's best to go early in the morning to avoid the crowds.

Visited on a rainy day as this is a indoor facility. Very crowded yet quite enjoyable. Variety was good and the tunnel was fantastic.

Overall, quite good place to visit.

Have seen practically nothing in travel guides about this and sort of just saw it while passing by and decided to stop. One thing I like about major aquariums worldwide is that they usually have a section about the fish in the area where the aquarium is located. This was no exception and we enjoyed the section on the Yangtze River fish. Signs are in English. Was very clean and the water in the tanks very clear. We went on a weekday and it was not too crowded. We recommended it to others who visited on a weekend and the crowds were impossible.

Our family enjoyed the Shanghai Ocean Aquarium. Our kids are ages 8, 5, and 2. No ticket required for 2y.o. (based on a height limit) so that was nice! Not too crowded on a weekday, easy to maneuver through the exhibits and plenty of time to see what we wanted to see. Nice variety of ocean animals, and many that we've never seen in the U.S. aquariums.
