“Big zoo with varying conditions for animals”

Shanghai Zoo (Shanghai Dongwu Yuan)
Reviewed 12 August 2014

This zoo covers quite big area and includes lots of animals to see. As reported by many the conditions for animals are not perfect but have also seen worse places, for some animals conditions seemed good or ok and for some less than ok or even bad. I hope it improves in the future. Place was also quite crowded & would recommend visiting during weekdays instead of weekend.

Compared to Shanghai Wild Animal Park this is closer to the city center and easily accessible via metro line 10 but Wild Animal Park seemed to have little bit better conditions for some of the animals.

I would say 90% of the animals here are underfed and kept incorrectly. I was depressed the whole time. Animals kept in tiny dirty enclosures with little or no stimulation. The water for the water based animals was dirty and stank, whole place is mosquito infested due to stagnant water. Worst was the sealion. Water just above ankle deep and the poor thing couldn't even swim. Only half its body under water. Bear in a concrete enclosure in 30degree heat begging gor food. Hooved animals kept in paved enclosures. No grassed areas . Kangaroos in muddy pen with no food - list is endless... :(

The Shanghai zoo is definitely not the most well kept zoo, but as a foreigner I would recommend spending a little extra money to feed the big cats. They take you out in a bus and drive you through multiple animal enclosures before stopping to see if you want to feed a live chicken on a rope to the cats, they go wild. You can also use a pig or a goat. Pretty cool to see but also super messed up, which basically describes a lot of stuff you may see in China.

We visited this zoo in July. There's was such a variety of animals including pandas and gorillas. The animals aren't treated very well, though but I wouldn't really expect any better. One of the bears was clearly really thirsty and there was no water. The animals seemed tired also. Very good so though over all, would advise anyone to visit! Also for 40 RMB it's a great cheap day out.

I am in China for 1 year and an half now, I did not went to shanghai zoo until this week. A friend of mine jockingly told me "go to the shanghai zoo if you want to create the chinese WWF"
Unfortunately, he was right... animals are kept in very bad conditions, elephants have chains, see lion is lying in 30cm of green dirty water, crocodile are in litter... Visitors send their garbages on the animals to make them move... for result, we saw an otter eating a plastic bag... If their is a glass to protect the animal, visitors will hit the glass until the animal moves... some birds do not have feather... monkeys are on concrete...
However, the animals are rare and very interesting to see. the park is nice but seems abandonned, you will discover some abandonned buildings with trees on it.. the lake is very dirty, oily and smelly...
We did not use the different facilities: attraction park did not look very safe, restaurants and shuttle
