“Good stay”
Reviewed 2 January 2014

We were there for 3 nights in the December. At the time, it was quite cold in Shanghai, so the heat, comfortable blankets and decent hot water pressure were all welcome.

The room comes w/ small perks including combs, q-tips, body lotion, slippers, robes, 2 bottles of complimentary water each day and a safe. The safe didn't work at first due to low battery, but we mentioned this to concierge and they had this fixed.

Location wise it suited us quite well, and is about a 5-10 min walk to Xujiahui station.

The things we weren't so fond of about the hotel were that the washroom looked a bit old, only had a stationary shower head, and wasn't designed very well in my opinion, in terms of placement of towels, and areas to hang clothes. A second thing was that there was only wifi in the lobby, and although it was a quite large lobby, there was limited seating to only 6 people. It also bothered us that they did not enforce non-smoking rules.

Overall, we felt it was a good stay, and hopefully if they implement a few changes, would consider staying there again.

ps. I think they actually brand themselves Wanping Hotel on site.

I prepaid for a Parkview non-smoking room and stated clearly that I need a non-smoking room as I was travelling with a three-year-old. However, when I checked in I was informed that they ran out of non-smoking room (poor planning on their part). They upgraded me to the executive room, which has very modern and nice decor, the mattress and linens were very nice. The only aspects that I didn't like about the room is its extremely tiny bathroom (so tight that we couldn't have more than one adult standing inside the bathroom) and the very thin wall (could hear almost every word that my neighbors said to each other at 12:30am!). Breakfast is very chinese style with limited western choices, but the spread was decent. The lobby is more like a three-star hotel but since we only stayed for the evenings, it didn't matter too much.

The hotel location is next to Xujiahui Park and a gas station, on Wanping road. The road gave the hotel its former name, and the park its present name. Sometime it is confusing, because many facilities in the hotel still bearing the former name.
The rooms are spacious with nice bathrooms. The breakfast is ok.
Close to the hotel (less than 10 minutes) is Huashan road with a nice modern commercial center that part of it opened at September 2012. There are department stores, mall, restaurants and fast food. Also close the underground stations of No. 1 to Peoples square, the French concession (Xintiandi) and Nanjing road, and No. 9 to Pudong area.
We used the hotel for 2 nights, returned to it late, so I can't tell anything about other facilities of the hotel, like the gym.

The room was of a great size for a near-city centre hotel. Very comfy and I thought the decoration was lovely and full of taste. I had a corner room and had great views out on to the park and streets below.

The main staff didn't have a great knowledge of English but did their very best to get by and were always attentive and helpful. The manager did speak good English and helped a lot when it came to tour arrangements and finding local shops. Room cleaning could be promptly requested any time of day and there was a free shoe-polish service, and free bottled water daily.

On the downside, I found the mattress rather hard. However I gather most hotels in china have hard beds. Staff gave me lots of extra pillows to help. There were only 3 TV channels in English- CNN, HBO and some Chinese educational channel. Luckily sport is a universal language!

Also there was no nightclub unlike in some descriptions written, and the bar had very little atmosphere. I don't know if it was a quiet time of year - I went in early June. I didnt spend much time in the hotel, and found several western style bars on Hengshan road, about 5-10 mins away, that were lively. The other direction towards xujiahui is filled with shopping malls and their food courts and other restaurants, also busy. Directly opposite the hotel is a nice park with bridges and trees, popular with locals. Overall location of hotel is good, although it is sort of 'in-between' metro stations.

Overall a decent hotel and good value for money.

we rate this hotel 3.5 stars. 2% of the entire staff put together speak english. The hotel beds are harder than rocks.. We were there for 7 days and got our linen changed once. The entire hotel smelt of smoke no matter what room you were in. If you are on a short stay i would reccommend this hotel but not for too long. It was a 10 min walk from both Xujihai station and Hangshen station. Close clubs/bars/restaurants on Hangshen road and were very western style.

Room Tip: City view is facing the building next door so avaoid.

Front desk was very efficient and helpful. Manager can speak good enough English.
Room was good size, enough fro two people to move around and store luggage. Comfortable beds and nice decoration- a bit Hilton style like. Bathroom was big enough, and hotel provided a full set of complimentary toiletry amenities.
Location is a bit off, about 15 minutes walk from the closest subway-hangshen lu on line 1- but the hotel was opposite side of a very nice park, and you will find banks, convenience stores and a nice bakery by walking toward the main street.
Hangshen Lu area is good to get Western style restaurants, bars and clubs. a bit of a pricy area though.
