“Wifi only available in lobby, have to share space with smokers”
Reviewed 12 August 2014

We stopped over in Shanghai on the way to Sweden, then Europe. We had a Chinese guide as part of the accommodation package, including three tours, and with breakfast included in the tariff. Rooms are big but getting tired. No coffee supplied in rooms, 2 tea bags only, Need more tea then buy it from the tea caddy in the room. Coffee available in the ground floor bar for $9.00 a cup, food extra. Wifi available here but only if you buy something, otherwise have to sit in the public seating area with smokers. We were shooed away from bar area trying to use Wifi while waiting 3 hours for guide pick up to go to airport. Breakfast menu good, restaurant at lunchtime was closed for maintenance one day, and alternative Japanese restaurant was closed at 1.50pm another day, hours until 2pm advertised. Beds too hard for our liking, but that is a personal thing. Restaurant staff very slow to replenish breakfast choice dishes, also not kept hot until end of hours. Didn't eat at night tat restaurant so can't comment. Used room service at night. First time got cold beer and wine, 2nd night were asked if we wanted ice (with beer and wine?) so we said no. Got warm beer and wine. Altogether a wake up for the European trip which was to follow.

Room Tip: High floors have little noise. Can open windows to dry the washing, hang it on coat hangers in the c...

Actually it was a nice hotel... big room... near the nanjing road and the bund. For the wifi we must ask the receptionist for the modem n deposit 200 yuan.
But the only minus of this hotel is their unfreindly staff specially the staff at the receptionist. Cant communicate in english.
But the staff at the front desk is very friendly n helpfull...

We stayed at the Salvo for two nights as a stopover on the way back to Nz. First thing to say is this a Chinese style (and assume Chinese run) hotel so obviously the first language is Mandarin hence why some reviews of this hotel are a little ridiculous as it is China... Anyway sometimes the English wasn't perfect but the staff all made an effort at least and couldn't be faulted and looked after us well. We got a blocked toilet which may or may not have been our fault as we put wet ones down at first. Nonetheless we phoned up housekeeping and they came and sorted it in five minutes flat. The little woman doing housekeeping on our floor was lovely and also found us a cot for our baby. The room interior was a tad old fashioned perhaps and I wouldn't say the room was completely spotless however we were really grateful for the size of room considering what we paid (massive and perfect for families with a younger child who needs to run around) and the staff were lovely and helpful and we really enjoyed out stAy here as did our son. The location was also great as only a five minute walk to Nanjing road and the station there for the metro.

The rooms are big but lacks refinement. Everything just felt cheap or old. My biggest complaint was internet access. There's supposed to be wi-fi in the rooms but it rarely worked. And when it did it was unseasonably slow. And the cell connection for American phones is horrible in China so wi-fi is a must to check in with people back home. Also, hardly anyone who worked at the hotel spoke English. I don't expect people in other countries to cater to Americans, it just makes a difference when asking for help getting a cab. Most cab drivers don't speak English so other hotels have doormen that will translate for you. Location was convenient but there were always people in front of the door trying to get us to hire hookers. It gets annoying and the hotel does nothing to discourage it.

We spent two nights at the Salvo Hotel in Shanghai after moving from the Astor House Hotel ( only to change the location in Shanghai ) The Salvo was a better hotel than I expected. My wife and daughter had spent one night here previously and liked the hotel but had no time to explore the area, the rooms are old style but large and well set up. The hotel is close to Nanjing road,Yuyuan gardens, the Metro and many resturants ,the breakfast was good, check in out was a little slow but the staff were very good. For the price and location I would recommend staying at this hotel. The Beijing Roast Duck Restuarant is close by and good if you like duck and we do, this was the best duck we had this trip to China.

Room Tip: We had a room on the 17th floor of 31 floors and we had a good view of the Bund especially at night...

Our son directed us to this hotel. It was not what we expected - but much, much better. The hotel is in a great location close to Nathan Road and the metro. It also is easy to find. The hotel itself is a little off the main roads which lessens the potential road noise. When you arrive at the airport take the Maglev train to Longyang Station then Metro Line 2 to East Nanjing Road Station and walk to the hotel - no more than ten minutes (this will save you money). The 32km Maglev journey is an event in its own right; the speed of the train has to be experienced. The shopping along Nathan is both interesting and frustrating take the time to visit the market building near the people's Square.

We enjoyed our stay at the Salvo Hotel and we will be back.

Room Tip: Get a room facing the bund

Shanghai was one of our best travel locations, and our one of our best experiences. The Salvo Hotel was within walking distances of major attractions - The Bund, The Pearl Tower, The subway, Nanjing Road, Yuyuan Garden and we could even walk to our aerial acrobat show "Kaleido". Staff were not as friendly as perhaps those in Malaysian hotels and their English not well understood, but we got along quite well even so. Breakfast was good- more food than we could eat and the room above average. The location was more than we could have asked for and we delighted on venturing out each day for more adventures. We had no tours booked here in Shanghai but we loved our day trips and we used the subway and bus to get to all major attractions. There is more to see than you can get to in a 2 day stopover, so spend a few days if you can.
