Radisson Blu Hotel Shanghai New World
Ranked #42 of 5,161 Hotels in Shanghai
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 8 February 2012

The Radisson New World Shanghai is located right in the center of the city in People's Square, not far from popular shopping street Nanjing East Rd.
The location is probably the best feature of the hotel, as it's convenient to get to most places in Shanghai from the hotel, and there's even a metro station just across the street.
Like many 5-star hotels in China, it's not really a five star hotel, but given some fancy plaque anyway by some tourism board that probably wants to claim that China has more five star hotels than anywhere else. Either way, the hotel is somewhere between a really nice three star and decent four star.
I stayed in a suite and the room was definitely a decent size, and had all the standard amenities.
If you're dead set on staying in People's Square, this is probably a better value option to Le Meridien or JW Marriott (both also in People's Square), but not as luxurious or elegant as other five star hotels in Shanghai.
For a good view of the city, I recommend going to their bar, located on the top floor.

Despite the famous name and the great location of the hotel, the service there is bad. First, the staff have a careless attitude and do not care if a guest is unhappy. Most of us agreed it's one of the worst hotels we've ever seen in terms of service. In a 5-day stay for an important group business meeting, my group had the following problems:
1) The internet service, which is quite vital on a business trip, was interrupted for hours on end and they did not care to fix it
2) Two of our rooms had leaky bathrooms, one of them also had a horrible smell in the bathroom
3) Airconditioning was either too cold or too hot in most rooms and couldn't be changed or fixed. The staff was also surprised we complained about a room that was 16 Celsius degrees all the time!!
4) Concierge gives bad advice on where to eat and where to go. They sent me and 2 other people from my group to a dodgy local restaurant where nobody spoke any English and the food was quite weird

Stayed at this hotel for 4 nights in December. Hotel is just off Nanjing Road and thus very central. The rooms are on the small side, but clean and sufficient for 2. The staff were helpful and polite and the turndown service with chocolates every evening was a nice touch. Breakfast was quite good with a large variety of dishes. The hotel is situated next to a shopping centre and above People Square station. There was always bottled water in the room and housekeeping were always obliging by keeping us well hydrated.

Room Tip: Ask for a river facing room as the view of the Bundt is remarkable.

This hotel is located in peoples square ,where better for shopping ,sightseeing or business. It has very quiet rooms well furnished ,a lovely swimming pool and best of all a good choice of restaurants.Try the revolving restaurant on the 45 th floor for the best views of Shanghai ,a good time is for Sunday lunch with a great choice of top class buffet ,which is as good as it gets !!!!. I have a season ticket for the 1st floor buffet which I use on a very regular basis for my wife and I and also to entertain guests,it is a very comfortable, quiet place to eat and talk infact although busy it gives a peaceful atmosphere unlike most eateries in Shanghai. The staff are always helpful and friendly,a nice place to stay,or just pop in the dine !!!

My husband and I stayed here on our way back to the UK from Australia.
The hotel is in an ideal location directly opposite People's Square.
The room was very spacious and very clean and well decorated. The bathroom was very novel with a window in the main room looking into it. There were blinds to allow privacy.
The bed was very comfortable, it was turned down every evening with chocolates left in your bed and clean slippers laid out.
Our room had a fantastic view of People's Square.
The staff were very polite and very friendly providing a map of the area and sights to see and do.
The free WIfi was handy too.
There are numerous taxis outside the hotel and the best way to get to and from the airport. Be warned the taxi drivers drive very fast! They are very cheap. The journey from the airport takes approx 30 - 40 mins.
The Big Bus (tourist bus) is also opposite the hotel and worth using to visit the very sights.
There are lots of eateries surrounding the hotel from the usual Starbucks to local cuisine. Be warned coffee is expensive in Shanghai.
There is a lot to do in Shanghai so don't try and do everything.
The Bund is easy to find and walk to via the main pedestrian shopping area. All shops stay open until 10pm.
On the way to the Bund you will pass numerous Art Deco buildings, do go in and look around, the Fairmount Peace Hotel is a well worth going into.
The Bund is also worth visiting during the day and evening to see the lights.
Xintiandi is another great area to visit.
Yuyuan gardens and bazaar is a must, the gardens are very large and delightful. The Bazaar is great for shopping and haggling. There is a famous steamed dumplings shop/restaurant - Nnxiang steamed buns in the bazaar , you will see the queue before the shop. They are fantastic!
The Jade Buddha Temple, the Jing'an Temple and the French Concession are all worth visiting.
Shanghai is a mecca for shopping, haggle like mad but enjoy it.
I cannot recommend this hotel enough, we will be coming back.

We were so pleased we picked this hotel; our room was lovely & quite, spacious (compared to our next stop in Hong Kong !) and had a comfortable bed. The location is great you are basically opposite the People's Square where you can visit the Museums, access the Metro and there are always taxi's out the front and the double decker Tourist Buses as well.

We found the hotel great value for money, the breakfast buffet was fantastic, a great variety to choose from including asian, arabic and western breakfast options. Staff were very polite and helpful and the whole stay was hassle free.

We also enjoyed the Spa and Sauna facilities which were great to relax after all the walking we did, the free wireless internet was also handy. Overall a great experience for our first time in Shanghai and would highly recommend this hotel.
