“First time in China”
Reviewed 5 October 2012

For our first visit to China my wife and i booked a tour with Wendy Wu tours and this was our first hotel. No problems with booking in at reception as this was all done by our tour guide.
Rooms a bit on the small side with quite a small bathroom as well. Good choice for breakfast in the mornings with a choice between Chinese food, continental or a full english. Staff very friendly and helpful. Situated close enough to get to a few shops and close to a train station and bus service. Probably the only down side was that the bar area was being refurbished when we arrived but was open on our last night there. Overall a good impression for our first stop.

The room including the toilet is quite clean. However internet service is not free and using cable instead of Wi-fi. You have to pay 60 RMB for one day. The breakfast buffet is confusing between serving Chinese food or American breakfast and honestly they are tasteless. You will be asked to give a deposit of 1000 - 2000 RMB upon checked in so prepare ahead. I didn't want to give them 1000 RMB for deposit because it doesn't stated anything about deposit in agoda; and I also think it's too much. So I bargained a little bit and ended up giving 300 RMB for the deposit.

Room Tip: Choose the room with window because it gives better view.

Hotel is a quite good one (by Chinese Standards). Do not expect same levels as some International Hotel chains, but finally would do. The main reasons one can choose this hotel are the overall cleanliness, friendly staff (but with limited English capabilities), proximity to the main attractions in Shanghai - Bund, Nanjing Road, People's Square. The hotel is very easy to find, being directly on Yan'an Lu. Do not fear the horrid noise levels on the elevated road, since the hotel rooms are quite well sound insulated.

I stayed in this hotel as part of a Wendy Wu tour so I did not actually choose this myself but was happy with the hotel.

Location – Situated right on the Yan’an elevated road, so very easy to find. A little way from the main sights, but it is possible to walk to People’s Square. Felt very safe to walk around the area. Immediate vicinity was fairly quiet with no bars or restaurant nearby.

Room – Good size with nice décor, bed not as hard as I had been led to believe was the norm in China. PC in room with free Wi-Fi access, cable TV, Fridge/Minibar, kettle. Free bottled water. We were on the 13th Floor which had a good view of the city. Despite being next to the elevated road, there was no noise to disturb sleep.

Hotel & Facilities – Nice décor, good hot/cold buffet breakfast (both local and international cuisine). There is a small bar on the ground floor with a very limited supply of drinks. Waiter was friendly but did not speak much English which caused a long wait to be served when several English groups came in at the same time.

Value for money – Good

This is a 'Wendy Wu' Hotel and had to suit their budget but it would've been great to start the China tour in more lavish surroundings. Having said that the rooms were acceptable and clean...(we had to hunt the floor for an earing so explored the carpet fully and it wasnt bad)!
Its just that the service levels in China are not what we have come to expect. There is a small bar area manned by a very nice barman but absolutely nothing was available on the bar menu except Heineken! They didnt even have orange juice let alone white wine! However the breakfast was ok and we even spotted 3 business people!

We stayed in this hotel for 3 nights at the beginning of a Wendy Wu Tour 'Majestic Yangtse' and were perfectly happy with it. The room was large and very clean. The beds were hard...but we had been prewarned by TA...(and we found all Chinese hotel beds hard!)...but do you know what?...by the end of our trip my 'bad back' had stopped aching! There were complimentary toiletries and slippers if you like such things! The breakfast room was smallish but we always found a clean table, and as our 'first taste' of Chinese hotel food it wasn't bad at all. There was a small bar on the ground floor which we went to one night for a night cap with some of our fellow travellers. The very young barman was very friendly and accomodating but by 10pm it was pretty obvious that he wanted to go home! The hotel has great views and the view of the 'ring road' at night (if you like that sort of thing) is stunning. The hotel was well placed for the sights and within easy walking distance of a metro station. We had freetime late one evening and went for a walk (turn right and right again out of hotel), we found local shops and cafes leading on to a more populated shopping road, it seemed to be an 'ok' area to be and we felt reasonably safe! Yes we too requested a non-smoking room...and got one that smelt strongly of smoke (as did the corridors) but we left the windows slightly open the first day and the smell disappeared. All in all our stay here was comfortable and a good start to the tour.

This hotel has 17 floors but only two are non-smoking. The public areas (foyer, hallways, bar) are smoking areas. It is hard to avoid smoke. The hotel would suit a smoker.

The reception staff have limited English (for a supposedly 'business' hotel) and the internet is slow and unreliable. It is in a handy central location, although there isn't much in the immediate vicinity of the hotel. Rates are reasonable.
