“Utels Youth Hotel”

We stayed at the Shanghai City Central Youth Hostel. A good location just a few minutes' walk from the metro. It's a bit difficult to find at first not helped by the hostel directions which were very good apart from they missed out 2 vital words 'turn right' after leaving the metro! We opted for a double private, a nice room with fast free internet. The free breakfast was more than adequate and as well as saving a few pennies it's nice not to have to find something to eat each morning. The reception staff where incredibly helpful and organised our tickets for the Acrobatic show and were always willing to help with directions and suggestions for restaurants and the supermarket. The best big hostel we have stayed in so far.

Well, where do I start. For the price it's probably not fair to judge too much, however I've been to better hostels for similar cost.
The good: close to Caoyang Rd station.
The bad: corridor full of shouting kids at night.
And the ugly: a very smelly bathroom.

We came here for the weekend of Qing Ming Festival. Before we booked, the staff assured as that young children were welcome and that they offer family rooms. There were guests of all ages there, some with young children, but in general, the hostel skews toward university aged backpackers.

PROS
- Very clean, including the public bathrooms. The rooms are serviced daily with fresh towels.

- Free breakfast. Nothing fantastic, mostly cereal, toast, and steamed bread with soy milk, but it's enough to get your day started. And if their breakfast doesn't call to you, McDonald's and a very good bakery are across the street.

- The staff is friendly.

CONS
- The hostel is very, very loud. The bar will blast music until at least midnight (despite their notices that guests need to be quiet after 11 PM, as to not bother the neighborhood) that you will hear all the way on the fifth floor. When the music stops, you'll hear drunk shouting and screaming for the rest of the night.

- Did I mention loud? Bar music aside, prepare to have people banging on the doors and walls all night, running up and down the hallways, and shouting and screaming at each other from the hallways and stairwells.

- Drunk people will bang on your door constantly, confused as to where their friends went. When they don't find them, they will start screaming down the hallway. So again, loud.

- The hostel is next to a subway line, which is convenient, but it's far from anything of interest in Shanghai.

Overall, if you're a young backpacker who is looking to meet people and play drinking games, you will probably enjoy this place. Otherwise, find something else.

For the money this place is substandard. The rooms are very basic, no character with bathrooms full of mould, bad showers and unreliable hot water.
Front desk staff speak
limited english and offer typical chinese hospitality or lack thereof.
Location wise its average, you will need to commute by metro to the bund and main attractions of Shanghai. Food in the bar is once again below average with hefty prices for beer and coffee. Coffee is reasonable as they have an espresso
machine but breakfast consists of boring serial, white toast, steamed dumplings and other equally bland options.
Would not stay again mainly because if the pooir standard of accomodation.

The facilities here really were good. We liked the big self service laundry area, including a drying space outside if you don't want to pay for the tumble dryer. The staff spoke good English and are able to book taxis for you and give directions to places. Having the use of computers and a printer was useful as we are on a long term trip and needed to get lots of paper documents printed. The bar was great and food very nice. The beds are the most comfy I've stayed in in China and rooms are clean and secure (key card access). The hostel is located very near the metro which is great, but it is a little far from the main sights. The building is very spacious and things are easy to access, it was nice to have the use of an elevator with our big heavy bags.

Despite some great facilities this place lacks polite friendly staff and a good atmosphere. One member of staff was completely unhelpful and we felt like we were always bothering him, we were not made to feel welcome at all. Others seemed helpful but we weren't fortunate enough to speak to them. We weren't told about the free breakfast and so missed that opportunity, nor were we directed to any of the facilities that were on offer, we had to find it all ourselves. This is a large, busy hostel/hotel with usually only 1 member of staff on reception at any time, so it takes 5 or 10 minutes to get served (this can be quite frustrating when all you require is to get a laundry token or something else quick!). We found this hostel to be quite clinical and lacks the atmosphere you can find at smaller, independent or family run places.

I found this hostel to be quite average, it had many positive aspects but the staff really brought it down for me. It's great for the money but you can find much friendlier and more initimate places for the same price elsewhere.

This place is great, as soon as I checked in your made feel welcome. The staff are very friendly and helpfull, they have team of ladies who clean the place every morning so its spotless! Soo many good features they must take suggestions from previous guests. The rooms are good and beds are massive like having 2 double beds one on top of each other. Bathrooms are private cubicles in shared bathroom! I would defo recommend this place to anyone, only downside is breakfast finishes at half 9, but since its free who can complain!

The staff was helpfull. The free breakfast was delicious. The rooms were clean.

We arrived late at night and were greated with kind staff. the bar area has a pool table and decently priced drinks. Overall everyone was helpful and we were guided to the flea market only a few short blocks away. Def. had a great time.
