“Great value for $”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 December 2010

Great value for money for the location (less than 3 minutes walk from the DaShiJie metro station on Line 8 and walk-able distance to People’s Square on Line 2). Room and bathroom is clean; and internet access is available in the hotel lobby. Restaurants and convenient stores are just a stone throw away.

The only thing, if to find fault with, is that the walls are quite thin… (a nightmare when there are noisy neighbors).

I stayed here during the expo in October, primarily choosing it for the location and cost. We had three rooms.

I was unlucky to have a 2nd floor room facing the street which was VERY noisy -- cars, buses, taxi drivers yelling and the drum store next door all made sleeping a little more difficult then normal. The other two rooms were on the inside, and apparently were much more quiet. Don't expect much from the rooms, an do consider the price. They were clean enough, no bugs and the shower worked.

The hotel location, walking distance to People's Square, The Bund, Nanjing Lu and easy public transportation was a highlight for us. We ate a Western breakfast (with free wifi) everyday at Element Fresh (located 5 blocks away). I've stayed in better and newer Motel 168s before, however I would return to this one for the location if necessary, but I would hesitate to recommend to a friend unless they knew what they were getting into.

this 168 motel is a very-good-value-budget-option at an an excellent location, sitting right between the Chinese Old Town and Bund area ... plenty inexpensive Chinese restaurants and stores close by.

standard rooms are no frills-not-large-not-tiny ... and clean. been there 2 years ago already ... still looked the same (a very good sign) - management really keeps this one tidy, (some) staff at the reception even speak English. all very friendly and helpfull.

Great location, short walk to the Bund, close to underground station. Also, just 2 mins away there was a bakery and a Tesco Express which came in handy!
Shopping around every corner which was great too!
None of the staff spoke english, which was surprising, although they did try their best.

I went last year around May, location is great , next to Yuen Nan street where lots of yummy food stalls & restaurant. (economical-not fancy ) . Motel is ok, not the fancy but reasonably clean. One thing though bathroom is is section out with Glass . So if you are sharing a room be prepared to share your privacy . I will say for the $$ & the location if you are not really picky worth it. Metro nearby and if you want a cab $11.00 to most places like, Nanjiang pedastrain streeet etc.

This a brand new hotel located at Shanghai, Puxi, Jin Ling Dong Road. It is a perfect location where you can travelled to most of the attraction within walking distance. It's only a 10 minutes walk to City Centre and 20 minutes walk to Yu Yuen Garden (one of the famous tourist attraction). The hotel is located at the old town and you will be able to eat most of the local food at a reasonable price. the taxi fare are reasonable too! The most important thing is the hotel rate is very affordable and value for money.

We stayed at the motel 168 in East Jing Ling Road which is at a different location to this. I must say that in all the places I stayed this has to be the worst experience. A friend in Shanghai had booked a 5 night stay for us. During our stay we figured out that the motel offers rooms at short notice by the hour. Due to the very thin walls you can hear TV that will keep you awake all night, and mostly people having [--], which was extremely embarrasing for friends visiting. They clean the room at all hours, to accomodate people checking in and out, using the rooms for [--]. One day 3 different couples had used the room for this purpose and it meant the maid noisily cleaned the room at 12.30AM in the middle of the night to allow another couple all night and so on. The corridors are noisy with people talking loudly and going in and out all hours. All the English speaking staff don't work the night shift so it is impossible to make a complaint. They could see we were obviously angry but they just laughed at us.

However, there are some redeeming factors about this place. The location was excellent, being a 10 min walk to People's Square and a bit further to the Bund but all walkable. It was located in a fairly nice street where many musical instrument shops are and there is a good traditional restaurant and a famous noodle restaurant right opposite. We paid 248 RMB for a double room. The room itself was actually v clean, modern and nice. The shower was v good. Internet was free if you brought your own laptop. We used the one computer in the lobby so it wasn't v private. Our room didn't have much of a view being situated on the side facing another room, but you can get some that face the street. The porters are quite helpful but they won't hail you a taxi to the airport. We looked at the breakfast menu but it was a v basic buffet and not worth sampling.

In general I would absolutely NOT recommend this to families and tourists. It will ruin your stay if you want to live in a 24hour[--] shop.

  • Liked — not much - the location
  • Disliked — the motel policy
  • Tips/Secrets — in general be prepared for rude service unless you stay in more expensive hotels
