“Smaller rooms and a tired hotel”
Reviewed 20 August 2011

Having stayed at the HI Express in Chengdu before this hotel, I'll admit, I was disappointed by this hotel. The rooms are smaller than other properties in the chain, and feel run down and tired. Mould in the shower, which seems to be a staple in hotels in China, is a problem here. The buffet breakfast as well was limited, and did not attain the same level of the other HI properties in China. I can't speak for other neighboring properties, but I'm sure with a little digging, you'd find a better deal.

We asked for a non smoking room but did not get one. There was a lot of fungus in our shower. The room was not well cleaned. No refrigarator in the room (when we stayed there the temp was 35°C so it would be nice to be able to cool drinks) The airco did not work properly (filters full with dust).
The hotel had a very bad smell everywhere (reception hall, breakfast room, elevators, corridors, room). The breakfast was Chinese orientated, not international. The tables and floor in the breakfast area were not always clean. The hotel is very far from the center: 15 min walk to the nearest metro station and then again 30 - 45 min to the center (depending on where you want to go) Metro is very cheap and efficient but does not work after 22:30. Would not recommend it if you plan to visit the city. Certianly not worth 3*!!

I have stayed at this Hotel ( and many others in Shanghai) many times on business as its location is perfect for me.
There are many things to consider when booking a Hotel in Shanghai, and price and location must be taken into account, many people expect a 5 star hotel at a 2 star price and end up disappointed. This is Shanghai one of the largest cities in the world so things do not come cheap. This hotel is good value for money and yes its location is not perfect for everything but taxis are plentiful and getting to all the main attractions will not cost you too much but may just take a little longer. If you want to be near all the action 24/7 and have all the facilities to hand then you are going to pay a lot lot more for your stay each night.
This Hotel is clean and safe and the rooms are comfortable if now a little dated.
The breakfast is just okay but it is better than just the continental type offered by other budget hotels. Remember This Is China!, TIC

Room Tip: a few rooms have fridges ask at check in

just stayed there last week end for company trip, not sure about the price. the room was ok, but the breakfast is not so good. didn't like the bath room.

the location is not good neither, very far away from city center. if i travel by myself, definitely will not be my choice.

The room was small and the bathroom wasn't very clean. The walk in shower had a musky smell.

I was studying abroad in Shanghai, and ended up spending a month in Holiday Inn Express Wujaochang. Locationwise it is quite out of the city in a local residential area. The nearest subway is about 15-20 min away, and it closes at 8 pm.
The rooms generally are fine, exactly what one would expect for the price. Few things: my room was a non smoking one, but it reaked of cigarettes the entire time. I also had little moss appear all over the shower as soon as I turned on the water. The stuff pretty much did not speak English, which made our stay rather difficult.
THe construction right outside the window would have occasional blastings that would wake you up in the middle of a night.
Breakfast buffet is Chinese style and pretty good. the dinner however is overpriced, especially compared to a number of great affordable options nearby.
OVerall a decent hotel to spend a few nights in, but surely far from being comfortable.

Stayed @ this hotel for 9 nights in total.
Much more expensive (around 1000RMB) during Expo, when demand was high. Once Expo was over, rates dropped to around 650RMB!
Continental breakfast included -- not just the usual toast and jam, but congee and veggies and buns and lots more.
Rooms were clean and efficient, though lacking in drawer space. Had to live mostly out of suitcase during the 9 nights.
Free internet in room and everywhere in hotel, plus 6 fast desktops near hotel lobby! Printing costs 3RMB per page, though.
Location not so great -- subway stations not as close as claimed -- 12RMB by cab from/to nearest subway station! A long cab ride to/from Pudong International Airport, too!
