“Beautiful home - we felt”
Reviewed 23 March 2009

George and Dolly Hawkins, and Dolly's mom Doris, could not have been more warm and friendly. We felt like part of the family within 5 minutes of arriving. We stayed 3 nights during our 5 weeks in CR. We'd recommend this B&B most highly. The location makes it central to many of CR's attractions, so it would also make a great home base.
Ask George for directions to "Jalapeno's" while there.

Dolly and George and Dory were very friendly, the room was great (we stayed half of our stay in each of the two larger rooms), and we enjoyed wonderful breakfasts. The house is also beautiful, with nice grounds and gardens and a pleasant terrace. Like all residential areas, homes are packed together with common walls between them, so sometimes there was noise from neighbors' activities; but we quickly became accustomed to that. We had a very relaxing vacation, our first time in Costa Rica.

It is a bit of a challenge getting to it, as it is not on the beaten track and cab drivers typically did not know where it was. However, Dolly gave us a card that had the directions (in Spanish), and that was invaluable. Despite the inconvenience of getting there, the convenience of leaving there was unsurpassed -- usually a cab was there 30 seconds to one minute after calling!

I would highly recommend this B&B.

Very clean, comfortable, convenient and affordable. Dolly, George and Dory were very accommodating and work with a guide/driver/translator that I would highly recommend for the total package! I wish we had longer to stay, but there is always next time. We used the B&B as "home base" and toured around central Costa Rica, including a 2 night stay at the Arenal Volcano. Alegria is within walking distance of town where we found, shopping, site-seeing, good food and friendly people. This B&B is in a residential area, but there is a convenience store across the street for necessities. There are two sitting porches at the B&B; one being a big shaded front porch where you can watch the people go by. This is one of the few B&B's in the area that have hot water! Each of the three bedrooms has its own private bath. Dolly and Dory whip up a wonderful breakfast each morning, always including fresh tropical fruit! With the ceiling fans and cool marble tile floors we did not need a/c. The San Juan Airport is a short drive away from the B&B and with the use of Luis, the guide/driver, we got around to much of the area. Luis seemed to know all the beautiful backroads and yummy restaurants. Note: I would highly recommend ordering the typical food while in Costa Rica which consists of black beans, rice, plantains, salad and the meat of your choice. Everything, and I mean everything, is reasonably priced there. The Alegria B&B is very affordable and I would highly recommend the place to anyone.

My husband and I decided to take our second annual family trip this year to Costa Rica. In our case family includes my three brothers and their wives. Our children are grown and we decided it was time for us to put some of that energy into ourselves.
We made so many wonderful memories (and friends) in this slow paced, warm spirited country. We are still floating on that cloud one gets after taking a perfect vacation.
The Alegria B&B was not only conveniently located, clean, homey feeling, and relaxing, but the proprietors; Dolly, George, and "Mom" were wonderful hosts in this country. They make you feel so at home and comfortable. They even had a Super Bowl Party for us and local friends and neighbors and it was so much fun in this melting pot of people coming together .What a great memory that is.
The food is delicious and reminds me a lot of cuban food that we have here in Florida, our favorite! I am missing all the rice and beans and chicken and the wonderful breakfasts at Alegria now!
Dolly is a wonderful cook and our breakfasts were all wonderful and the colors of the fruits, smell of Costa Rican coffee and cooking breakfasts that greeted us each morning is a delight to remember.
We spent several days at Arenal Volcano and Dolly made those reservations for us and she was right on in her selection because we felt we were in paradise in the rain forest. We all got up enough nerve to go on the zip line and that's one of our best memories as well.
I can't say enough about our vacation, about Alegria, Dolly/George/and "Mom". One suggestion that I would add is to include the one driver that we hired for each day of our stay there. We all are singing his praises and miss him! He really took care of us and worked hard to make our stay there a wonderful one. He went way beyond the call of duty, even waking us up at 3 a.m. to see the volcano erupt and the red hot lava run down the side. What memories we have and this man is in most of them. We were even able to meet his beautiful family.
Life in Costa Rica and at Alegria is truly Pura Vida.

Alegria is a relaxing place to return to after fun filled days visiting the Central Valley of Costa Rica. It is open and inviting, not a place where you are stuck in a bedroom or a lobby, or in a hotel restaurant. There are indoor and outdoor spaces to sit, read, including a library of Costa Rica to help discover where to visit and to learn about its species of plants and animals and its topography. There is a TV room. It is a clean, comfortable, beautifully appointed B&B with friendly and resourceful hosts. It is easily accessable to the airport and the restaurants and attractions of San Jose and the rest of the valley. There are many easy day trips to Poas Volcano, La Paz Waterfalls, Doka coffee plantation, to name a few. We will definitely return to Costa Rica, and when we do to Alegria too.

We stayed at Alegria at the beginning and end of our trip to Costa Rica. The convenience of staying in Alajuela is not to be underestimated-- we did our entire trip without setting foot in San Jose, which we saw as a plus.

Alegria is beautiful with spotless rooms that are tastefully decorated-- we second everyone else's comments! Dolly and her mother and George are gracious hosts. There is a computer available for use (don't expect a fast machine) and wireless internet as well. Our only complaint was the noise, and I hope that it was a double-fluke. Both nights we stayed happened to be weekend nights, but the street noise (and one night, a party) kept us awake. Light sleepers might want to avoid the weekend. The only other caution is to make sure to print out directions to the B&B, as cab drivers are unfamiliar with the location. We had two who had to stop and ask directions along the way, and we would have been absolutely lost in directing them without the printed directions in hand (make two copies!). There is a small market across the street, but otherwise a $2 cab ride into Alajuela proper is necessary for food. A cab from the airport to Alegria is now $6 (to the airport is a little less). It can add up, but is worth it to avoid the real bustle of downtown Alajuela.

Do eat at Jalapenos, a Mexican restaurant in Alajuela recommended by Dolly and George. Delicious, and the owner (Norman) is great at giving travel advice and navigating local buses.

Alegria B&B is a great stay if you're looking for accommodations in the San Jose area, especially if you have an airplane to catch the next morning. Highly recommended!

George and Dolly run a B&B out of their homes. The home is immaculate, beautiful, and they are both very friendly.

We had just come back from white water rafting and Dolly was kind enough to let us dry our clothes in her dryer--it was much appreciated.

We stayed in the Las Ranas room. The bathroom is located just across the hallway. Dolly showed me all of the rooms and the biggest room (with private bathroom) looked really really nice. (They all looked nice, but the private bathroom was more spacious than the one associated w/ the Las Ranas room.)

The room was tidy and clean and was perfect for our overnight stay.

Dolly and George were gracious enough to show us a great local Mexican restaurant, where we ended up having a great meal with them talking about our travels and their experiences living as expats in Costa Rica! It was the perfect way to end our week in the country.

Dolly was kind enough to cook us breakfast early, as we had to leave at 7:30 AM. The breakfast was GREAT! Eggs with ham, potatoes, pastries, juice, coffee, and lots of delicious Costa Rican fruit! The breakfast kept us going all day long!

I would hands down recommend folks looking for QUIET accomodations near the airport.

Next time we're in Costa Rica, I am definitely staying here again!
