“Close to airport - beautiful gardens”
Reviewed 12 July 2013

We stayed at Tacacori Ecolodge our last night in Costa Rica and arrived around 6:30pm. We had a GPS with our rental car so we had no problems finding the lodge. It was pouring down rain when we arrived. Patrick met us at our car with an umbrella and asked if we needed any help with our luggage. We had our children with us (ages 15 & 11) so we decided it would be better to get them to the room then my husband I would come back for what we needed. Parking is at the top of the hill and you need to walk down a very long pathway to get to the private casitas. It is very well lit and even in the dark you could see all the beautiful flora. We stayed in Casita Poro which had a queen size bed and a twin bunk bed for our children. The room is quaint with a small desk that had a lamp and hot water pot to make tea or coffee. The bathroom is good sized with a wonderful walk in rain shower. The first thing the kids noticed was the bugs! Yes, I know we are in the rainforest but we had stayed in a tree house earlier in our trip that didn't have as many bugs. Lots of ants, spiders, and cockroaches on the floor and walls. I'm sure it was from the rain. My daughter went to lay on the bottom bunk and saw that there was a trial of small sugar ants all over the pillow, sheets, and comforter. My husband and I did what we could to get rid of them but getting her to sleep was a task. The queen bed was very hard and made it uncomfortable to sleep. My son was kept awake with the flying bugs and I finally turned on the small lamp that was on the desk to hopefully get them to fly over there and leave him alone so we could all get some sleep before our flight in the morning. It seemed to work and thankfully he fell asleep before the electricity went out around 1:30am. Up at 5:30 to get ready for our flight. Had to walk back up to the car to get clean clothes out due to all the rain the night before. In the daylight the gardens are even more beautiful. Once ready we headed up for breakfast, I believe we were the only ones staying at the lodge during this time. We were greeted by Nadine and Patrick and quickly brought hot coffee and juice. They even made hot chocolate for the kids. Large fruit plates, toast and jam (the kids loved the chocolate and banana one), and then some eggs. My husband went to go pay and that's when things got a little tricky. We had booked our reservation through Booking.com and were quoted a price that said it included 2 adults + 2 children but not the 13% tax so we had stopped by the ATM and took out what we thought was enough to cover the hotel and departure tax at the airport. My husband came back to the table and said they were asking for additional money because of the children. Thankfully I had printed out our reservation form and highlighted all the important information. We brought that back to them but they still wanted us to pay saying the children were not included and the price was wrong. Patrick stated he was aware of the problem when we booked way back in February. My husband asked why didn't they email us to let us know back in February that it was incorrect and offered to meet them half way with the price difference. After a sleepless night and needing to get to the airport this was added stress we did not need. Nadine was visibly upset and we did feel bad about this but we also felt they should honor what was quoted through Booking.com, finally Patrick met us half way and we paid the extra money and were on our way to the airport. I'm sure this is a wonderful place to stay but it didn't work for our family. It is geared more for adults only and although the casitas are set in a beautiful garden away from the main house it is daunting to get your luggage down there especially in the rain. All and all Patrick and Nadine were accommodating but I would recommend this lodge for adults only.

We appreciate you taking the time to present your opinion about our hotel.

We take great pride in the quality of our gardens and believe that this sets us apart from many of our competitors. Thank you for recognizing the efforts of our gardener, Carlos.

In your review you wrote: “Parking is at the top of the hill and you need to walk down a very long pathway to get to the private casitas”
You are right, there is approximately 100 yards between the parking and the private casitas and it is intentional that we placed our casitas away from the parking lot and the street, so that our guests can sleep in a peaceful area. We remind you that we are situated close to the airport and it leads to late arrivals and early departures for our guests, consequently it is preferable that the parking lot is away from the bungalows. For this reason, Tacacori Ecolodge is not adapted to elderly persons, or those with specific health problems.

About Bugs
the biodiversity of Costa Rica is very rich (much richer than that found in our concreted and disinfected cities). If you choose to travel with children in a tropical country, it is good to be aware of, and educate the children that the fauna is plentiful, certainly, but very different, and insects are a part of this amazing biodiversity.

I am anxious to point out to you that TACACORI is situated in the middle of a tropical garden and that in spite of all our efforts, it is practically impossible to prevent insects from entering the rooms. Even equipped with mosquito nets on every window and seals under the doors, small insects come in because we cannot be behind every guest who leaves a door open! This is particularly true during the rainy season. Some insects you saw may have entered while bringing in your luggage. Simply leaving the door open briefly with the light on is enough to attract and allow insects to enter the room.

To be sure, we place the utmost importance on the cleanliness of our casitas, and have trained our housekeeper thoroughly on this point. However, since we are an ecolodge, we do not use pesticides or insecticides on our property. The essence of an ecolodge is to exist in harmony with nature, and as much as possible, we use non aggressive, natural products which are beneficial for the environment. Some hotels rooms are regularly fumigated to kill all the insects, but on the other hand, guests are subjected to the inhalation of these harmful chemicals all night, which we believe could be the origin of many cancers. It is a question of choice, and for us, the health of our guests is most important.
We would have appreciated the opportunity to work with you towards a solution of the discomfort of your children had we been made aware of the situation. We do not regard this as negligence on our part; it is simply a natural part of our ecosystem.

About our mattress: you put a poor note for Sleep Quality.
Our mattresses are new and we choose the best quality (Orthopedic mattresses - manufactured under German license) available in Costa Rica, and also the most expensive, to offer the best comfort for our guests. These mattresses satisfy 99 % of our customers, so we are sorry that this type of mattress does not correspond to your usual preferences.

Concerning the invoicing of your overnight stay:
Online reservations with Booking.com systems may automatically charge a basic rate for 2 persons for each room. Children are considered as extra beds. One additional child or adult is charged USD 15 per person per night when using existing beds (like in this room with 2 extra beds). All the prices are without taxes (13 %). We agree that it can be confusing.

We’ve taken your feedback seriously and asked our partner, Booking.com to make the appropriate changes to their website. As of now, our understanding is that this family room will be quoted for maximum occupancy (4 pax), whatever the composition of the family.

We would like to remind that you that you did not pay for this extra charge. Since you were planning to pay the airport exit tax with your cash, we agreed to waive the $30 charge for your children. Thus, your 2 children slept free of charge and also had 2 free breakfasts!

You husband indicated that he appreciated this courtesy, consequently it was very disappointing to read your review, rating our value as "average".

Nadine and Patrick were so accommodating. We stayed here June 28th and July 5th. The property was stunning and well maintained. We had different casitas during each stay and they were both beautiful and luxurious. I agree with another reviewer this was the best shower we had in Costa Rica - and we stayed at a five star resort during our trip. We will 100% return to Tacacori upon our return. Highly recommended.

Quiet and well landscaped. Quaint little room, reasonably priced. Breakfast, which was included, coffee, juice, toast, home made jelly, fruits and scrambled eggs, no meat. We stayed only one night and wished we could of stayed another. Very friendly staff, husband and wife?

We arrived in the dark and left early to catch a flight the next morning. Did not enjoy the entrance, very difficult to find, especially in the dark. A sttep grade, making the exit with a stick shift a nightmare. Swinging gates are controlled by remote control which they give you with their room key. They are cash only, which caused us a problem, had to make a quick run to a ATM, some 3 miles away. They did warn me in an email, so that is my fault for not being prepared.

Airport was only 6 miles away, 15 to 20 minutes. Good location on a hill, pleasant temperatures. NO AC.

Room Tip: There are only four, and all appeared to be the same. We had the last one, so bit further to carry y...

After a little trouble with our taxi driver to find the place, we arrived at Tacacori and it was so much more than we expected!

Where can I start?! the grounds are simply breathtaking; the bungalows offer you privacy with all the mod cons, including the best shower we had on our trip; and the service is above and beyond great service.

The girl looking after the place, (I am really sorry, I forgot her name- Sonique maybe?) was really great. She was incredibly friendly to us. Right from welcoming us in, to giving us advice on where to visit or helping us sort out hire cars and laundry, she went above and beyond expectations.

One of my concerns before booking was the reviews saying it was in the middle of nowhere. I emailed the guys here, they got back to me really quickly, were able to organise a hire car at a great price that was ready and waiting for us, so we got the best of both worlds- tranquility and convenience.

There are so many positives to this place, it has to be one of my favourite places I have ever stayed. I highly recommend it and would stay here again should I come back to Costa Rica.

Make sure you try the chocolate banana butter in the morning - it's to die for!
Also keep an eye out for Florita, the green parrot- she is the gorgeous little house bird with a big personality.

Such a great place to regroup after a long flight! We stayed here on our way to Playa Samara and then again on our way out of Costa Rica. Great proximity to airport, lovely accommodations, and Nadine and Patrick are SO helpful and nice. Off the beaten path and a bit secluded--so if you are looking for a walkable, lively environment, this is not the place for you. There is only one place to eat at within walking distance(the amazing Xandari lodge. Tasty business), and that is about all there is. But you will feel totally ready to conquer your travels after regrouping here for a night or two.

We arrived late evening after returning from Tortuguero. The welcome was lovely as was breakfast each morning. We hired a GPS from them & thank God we did- very useful over the next 14 days touring.
The cottage is beautifully decorated with lots of space & a nice big bathroom.
Would definately recommend here.

The Tacacori EcoLodge is a beautiful garden-like spot, with only four little villas located on the grounds beyond the owner's home. Wonderful fruit and a full breakfast is served on the deck overlooking the gardens, with birds, butterflies, and animals in view. You do need a car, but it is a perfect place to stay outside the hubbub of San Jose while you enjoy the scenery of Poas Volcano and the wonderful Peace Garden waterfall park. The hosts are very helpful with advice of local touring.
