We stayed at Tacacori Ecolodge our last night in Costa Rica and arrived around 6:30pm. We had a GPS with our rental car so we had no problems finding the lodge. It was pouring down rain when we arrived. Patrick met us at our car with an umbrella and asked if we needed any help with our luggage. We had our children with us (ages 15 & 11) so we decided it would be better to get them to the room then my husband I would come back for what we needed. Parking is at the top of the hill and you need to walk down a very long pathway to get to the private casitas. It is very well lit and even in the dark you could see all the beautiful flora. We stayed in Casita Poro which had a queen size bed and a twin bunk bed for our children. The room is quaint with a small desk that had a lamp and hot water pot to make tea or coffee. The bathroom is good sized with a wonderful walk in rain shower. The first thing the kids noticed was the bugs! Yes, I know we are in the rainforest but we had stayed in a tree house earlier in our trip that didn't have as many bugs. Lots of ants, spiders, and cockroaches on the floor and walls. I'm sure it was from the rain. My daughter went to lay on the bottom bunk and saw that there was a trial of small sugar ants all over the pillow, sheets, and comforter. My husband and I did what we could to get rid of them but getting her to sleep was a task. The queen bed was very hard and made it uncomfortable to sleep. My son was kept awake with the flying bugs and I finally turned on the small lamp that was on the desk to hopefully get them to fly over there and leave him alone so we could all get some sleep before our flight in the morning. It seemed to work and thankfully he fell asleep before the electricity went out around 1:30am. Up at 5:30 to get ready for our flight. Had to walk back up to the car to get clean clothes out due to all the rain the night before. In the daylight the gardens are even more beautiful. Once ready we headed up for breakfast, I believe we were the only ones staying at the lodge during this time. We were greeted by Nadine and Patrick and quickly brought hot coffee and juice. They even made hot chocolate for the kids. Large fruit plates, toast and jam (the kids loved the chocolate and banana one), and then some eggs. My husband went to go pay and that's when things got a little tricky. We had booked our reservation through Booking.com and were quoted a price that said it included 2 adults + 2 children but not the 13% tax so we had stopped by the ATM and took out what we thought was enough to cover the hotel and departure tax at the airport. My husband came back to the table and said they were asking for additional money because of the children. Thankfully I had printed out our reservation form and highlighted all the important information. We brought that back to them but they still wanted us to pay saying the children were not included and the price was wrong. Patrick stated he was aware of the problem when we booked way back in February. My husband asked why didn't they email us to let us know back in February that it was incorrect and offered to meet them half way with the price difference. After a sleepless night and needing to get to the airport this was added stress we did not need. Nadine was visibly upset and we did feel bad about this but we also felt they should honor what was quoted through Booking.com, finally Patrick met us half way and we paid the extra money and were on our way to the airport. I'm sure this is a wonderful place to stay but it didn't work for our family. It is geared more for adults only and although the casitas are set in a beautiful garden away from the main house it is daunting to get your luggage down there especially in the rain. All and all Patrick and Nadine were accommodating but I would recommend this lodge for adults only.
