My husband and I stayed in November 2012, and we purchased the stay through Groupon. We were a little skeptical after reading all of the reviews (bad food, lock down after 9 PM, etc.) but we ended up having such a wonderful time during our stay. The staff seemed very shy and humble, but were always eager to help. It was very tranquil and sometimes it felt as if we were the only guests staying at the resort. We loved how breezy it was during that week - at night we would even sleep with the large windows wide open. We knew we wouldn't enjoy the restaurant as much because we aren't vegetarians. In the mornings we'd have fruit for breakfast and that was enough to get us energized for the day. We're not coffee drinkers, so that wasn't a problem. We didn't try any of the spa services as we were out having our own adventures through Costa Rica. We'd find local restaurants for dinner and return promptly at sun set. The front gate was closed at night, but they always have a security guard available to open it for you. We would definitely recommend this hotel to friends and families, and if we have the opportunity to travel back to Costa Rica we would stay at this resort again.

If you're looking for restful sleep, relaxing spa treatments and very healthy eating this place is for you. Allan is really wonderful, bringing ice water to the pool or spa and helping with anything you could need. The staff are very attentive. They all speak very good English. Breakfast is tea and a biscuit. Dinner is more varied and well presented, really quite good. We did decide such healthy living is perhaps not what we're after on vacation. It was incredibly quiet, and in fact my husband and I were the only clients. There is no coffee, no meat, no wine or beer. But if you're after a cleansing, quiet respite from daily life you'll probably love it.

Thank you very much for your review. We are glad you enjoyed your stay at Asclepios. We are sorry to hear you that you did not have the opportunity to taste any of our good organic and non organic wines offered at Higia Restaurant.

This place was pure bliss. Went with my two teenage daughters and niece in April. It was everything we expected and more. Four days of yoga, massages, healthy food and just chilling by the pool. The staff was kind and courteous, especially our waiter Allan, who was wonderful. The massages were great. I had just gone to La Costa in San Diego and the treatments and treatment rooms at Asclepius are as good if not better than La Costa's. The yoga instructor was also very good and challenging. My only negative observation is that the walls between our two rooms were very thin and we could hear everything from the next room. In our case, we were all family so it was not a problem for us. Perfect place to detox your body and mind. Can't wait to go back.

This hotel is not for the party goer or anyone looking to drink and socialize. As most of the reviews state the retreat is tranquil with breathtaking views. I stayed from November 19th-23rd. I traveled alone for the first time and I am glad I stayed here. The staff was very attentive and arranged drivers for wherever I needed to go. One day I did not arrive at the scheduled time and the front desk representative called to the taxi driver to make sure I was okay! The downside is not located near a beach and it was cost you approximately $160 for a driver to take you to Jaco or Puntarenas. I had the driver for about 5 hours and was able to stop and take pictures along the way. I cannot give enough praise to the staff for their attentiveness, professionalism, and going above and beyond. On my birthday the entire staff came out at breakfast and sang Happy- B-Day. If you are looking for some undisturbed downtime book this hotel. It was an experience of a lifetime.

Room Tip: Stay in the Aphrodite room, absolutely beautiful. If I can ever afford to go back I will bring snack...

We went for a weekend getaway. It is so beautiful. It is about a 25 minute ride from airport. The place is quiet and gated. We had the place to ourselves most of the time. It is perfect if you just want to decompress and relax. We had the outlets massage overlooking the mountains. We were aware of the organic clean food and it was delicious. We felt clean after eating that way for a few days. The food is mostly vegetarian but there is fish and chicken. There is not coffee but Japanese green tea was perfect. Loved the chickpea cakes. The service was great. We will be back!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with queen bed..some have twin beds

Interesting spa concept for a hotel. No TV, no meat, no beer. Lots of tranquility, nice rustic minimalist rooms with beautiful hill views. Great options for massage, sauna, yoga, etc.

Now for the not so good: weird location (by the road but far from any interesting villages; no taxi driver from San Jose' will know to take you there); horribly slow stoned-age internet connection at a local PC. Frontdesk staff is terribly informed about tour options and public transportation, and basically answer "Get a taxi" to any question you ask. (That might be because most guests have little interest in exploring the region?...).

I suggest staying, 1) if you can a good discounted e-coupon, 2) and/or, as part of a longer stay across the country (including other hotels), 3) if you have absolutely no interest in exploring other countries, 4) if you speak Spanish and like exploring places on your own (asking villagers and bus drivers - all very helpful). Pura Vida.

Purchased a Groupon for 4 nights at the Asclepios Wellness Spa. No red meat. No alcohol. Yoga. We were two of only 4 couples there. If you want isolated, introspective, system cleansing, meditative retreat...this one works. Not my cup of tea but the girls seemed to like it ok.
