We stayed at Lagunillas Lodge as a basis for exploring volcano Poas. It is a lovely place - part of the owner's finca, at the end of a VERY bumpy road. Don't even dream of getting there unless you have a 4 wheel drive. It's just not doable.
We stayed at the cabin, which is detached from the main house (about 50 m. away). The cabin is very simple, but cosy and fun to stay in, and has stunning views of the San Jose valley. If you expect a 5 star hotel - rethink. It is basic.
Hot water was intermittent, and to heat up the room we had to build a fire in the traditional fireplace that is located in the main room of the cabin (it did heat the entire cabin throughout the night).
The couple who own the place is lovely, and will take you to catch your dinner at their pond (the husband taught our kids to fish with a rope and a piece of banana, needless to say - they were ecstatic!). He then showed me a TV news report about Poas's eruption the same day and suggested, wisely, that we make an early start the next morning so we would not miss the views of the volcano as it steams off the erupted gases.
And, you can't beat the location in terms of proximity to volcano Poas - we were there within 10 minutes of our departure from Lagunillas.
We would definitely stay there again if we get back to the area.
