“Nice transitional hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 December 2013

Stayed here the first and last nights of our trip to Drake Bay. A beautiful property, close enough to the airport for a quick trip. They provide shuttle service to and from the airport. The views are gorgeous, of the surrounding mountains and the Central Valley. Rooms were very nice, the beds comfy, bathrooms looked newly redone. The restaurant on site, the Quetzal Room, had a good variety of choices for lunch and dinner at reasonable prices - not as inexpensive as a soda would be, but still reasonable. The staff were helpful and friendly. We did ask to have a different room for our last night stay from the first room we stayed in, room 15. It overlooked the entrance to the hotel and the view was very nice. However, there is a yapping dog that lives next dog that likes to bark a lot. That afternoon/evening, it sounded like a group of teenagers were playing a loud game in the gym of the church across the street; then, the trumpet player started practicing around 7-8 that night. As there is no air conditioning, we enjoyed the cool evening breeze but it would have been too warm with the balcony doors and windows closed. Additionally, this room seemed to be located above the kitchen, so we could smell cooking odors (different from aromas) and hear pots and pans clinking and clanging. Not a deal breaker, but it distracted from the tranquil nature that the hotel encourages. Our room the last night was at the rear of the property and was perfect. One other thing to note - one reason I chose this property was the advertised "Coffee Trail". I was picturing a nice trail that we could walk for about an hour or so. It is a nice little trail, but would take you a max of 15 minutes to walk. You could turn it into an hour by stopping frequently and resting, look for birds, etc. Just don't plan on it being any type of exercise. The number of birds on property were good and we enjoyed observing them.

Room Tip: Choose a room in the rear of the property for more quiet.

Thank you for your review and mostly positive comments. I am sorry your sleep was disrupted by noise from street, I believe the town may have had some kind of party or festival going on across the street at the church. This happens on occasion. As you point out 3 rooms face the street. They are your first night's room, #15 also #11 and #13. These 3 rooms can experience some noise although most nights it is not excessive. The other 27 rooms are quieter as you experienced on your second stay. Again, I'm sorry for the disruption. Thanks very much and please visit again.

The staff, especially Darwin and Gabby, here is fantastic, and speak English; they were very helpful with some of the issues we ran into that can sometimes happen when traveling. Due to flight problems (snowstorms in the US) we were delayed coming in. The shuttle van had already gone back to the hotel. We had already found out our luggage was lost, not the best start to a vacation. We thought we would have to get a taxi, however someone pointed out a person who waits for people with a sign (for hotel). He was able to call the van back. We were so thankful the HBV was our destination.

The room was a welcome site and very well decorated. It was #14 facing the back above the laundry facilities with a view of the wooded back area. The room included a nice size flat screen TV with satellite, no coffee maker nor safe in the room however Wi-Fi worked pretty well in the room and there was a balcony to sit outside. There is a fruit plate breakfast with bread that comes standard with great CR coffee and juice as well as having teas available.
It was the staff that suggested we have the rental car delivered to the hotel, helped out with the cell phone we rented and offered suggestions for stores and restaurants. It is a good place to get acclimated before starting off your journey. We spent a couple of nights here. Note that in the end we had to leave with only 1 of 2 suitcases.

The Hotel Buena Vista is located in Alajuela, next to San Jose high on a hill. It is next to a school and church; more of a residential area. I would recommend taking a taxi if you do not have a car. They offer their own tours; have a small pool, and a nice back area with fantastic views of the city below along with a short coffee trail. They have a security guard all night long that can open the gate after closing. The driveway is a bit of an incline and you need to watch for the sign especially in the dark. Please note it is very common for hotels and housing in general to have gates.
We were very happy that we chose HBV most especially with all of the issues we ended up having.

We stayed at Hotel Buena Vista after arriving in San Jose. A friend lives in Alajuela and this was convenient for visiting her. The view from our room's balcony was spectacular! We could see the mountains, including Poas Volcano, during the day and looked down on San Jose's city lights at night. Breathtaking! The food in the hotel restaurant was delicious. Especially the French Onion Soup! The staff was super friendly and helpful. The rooms are not fancy, but were VERY clean & comfortable...that's the most important part to me. There is a nice little pool to take a dip in and wonderful grounds to walk on and explore. Would highly recommend for the cost!

Room Tip: Request a room on the 2nd floor with a balcony to overlook downtown San Jose. Worth it!

Not only does this hotel have a beautiful layout, the view is truly exceptional. The hotel is situated on a hill that overlooks the entire city and is truly beautiful at night. Moreover, there is a coffee trail on the property which makes for a beautiful early morning walk. The service is phenomenal and the the rooms are quite comfortable. All in all, a truly fantastic experience. I wish that I could go back!

We stayed here for just one night before an afternoon flight from SJO. The location was perfect since we had planned to drive up to Poas Volcano after we checked out and then have plenty of time to return our rental car before our flight. The hotel grounds are lovely -- lots of vegetation and a nice Coffee Trial with a few signs explaining the various plants. There was a small pool and a swingset, plus various chairs to relax around the property. We decided to eat dinner there and are so glad we did. Delicious and fairly reasonably priced. Breakfast the next morning was included and was delicious and very filling. We'd definitely recommend staying here on your way in/out of Costa Rica. Make sure to visit Poas volcano while there.

We stayed here for just one night when we arrived in San Juan before heading to Arenal the next morning. It was a well maintained classy hotel on top of the hill overlooking San Juan. Nice coffee trail starts from the door. The room was average with 2 double beds but was clean and the beds were comfortable. There was a nice garden around the hotel with great views over San Juan and a pool area but the pool was very small and did not function. The hotel is situated far from the city center and rooms were very quiet, but there was nothing around in a walking distance. The only dinner place around is hotel's restaurant. The food was good but clearly overpriced. The staff was great and friendly. Overall expression was good and would stay here again.

Thanks very much for staying with us! I'm glad you enjoyed most aspects of our hotel. I would like to clarify a couple of comments. The pool is not large as noted but it is fully functional. We are a 30 room resort so don't have a large swimming pool. The pool is always fully functional. It is crystal clear and solar heated. The pool is amongst gardens of flowering plants so if a strong wind blows we get some flowers and a few leaves in the pool. We net out any flowers or leaves every morning. As to food prices, Costa Rica is not an inexpensive country. Our dinner entrees run from $10 for Pasta Pomodoro to $20 for Filet Mignon. We bake our own dinner bread and coffee and tea are free. Labor law mandates a 10% gratuity be placed on every bill, to be distributed to your waiters so no tipping is expected. This is the law and is strictly enforced. Sales tax here is 13%. The 10% gratuity and the 13% sales tax are INCLUDED in the meal price. Please bear in mind, we provide a free airport shuttle to and from the international airport and a free, nice tropical breakfast. Yes, we are in a rural setting, a small town, which is actually more of an advantage than otherwise. Staying in or around a city results in more noise, car exhaust, and other disadvantages. Lastly all our rooms and bathrooms are new and generally described as much nicer than average. Please visit us again and we will do our best to improve your experience.

We were flying into San Jose in order to get to the Osa Peninsula, so we needed a night's stay into and out of the country. Hotel Buena Vista is perfect if you just need a place to rest your head. It's a lot further from the city center and not in walking distance of much. It has a beautiful pool. The rooms are nice and clean and quiet. The staff are truly great! Jonathan helped us find a restaurant for dinner one night and he even drove us there because it was raining and the taxi driver wouldn't take us. Cindy was great as well.
