Xandari Resort & Spa
Ranked #1 of 27 Hotels in Alajuela
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 21 July 2013

We recently made our second family trip to Costa Rica. On our first visit, we had an excellent stay at the Xandari Resort and decided to visit again for the first and last nights of our trip. During our last visit, the bakery staff made an AMAZING cake for my wife's birthday and I dearly hoped they could help us again. I contacted Lucy from the Xandari and she arranged for another amazing cake surprise! She also helped arrange for transportation to and from the airport.

As with our last visit, we found the staff at the Xandari to be pleasant and friendly. The food was excellent and the view from the dining area is always a treat! During the day we could see birds flitting about among the trees and during the evening we were treated to an spectacular view of the valley and the lights of the city.

The trail leads to several waterfalls and is a great little adventure for the family with excellent pictures of the falls and the country side. Be careful about starting out too late, however, since it gets dark pretty quickly! The grounds of the resort are spectacular! They lovingly maintain a beautiful view of flowers and plants along the trails, villas, and pools. We felt like the entire resort was one gorgeous botanical garden! The sunset pool is a must-do activity with an amazing view of the valley.

Simply put, We cannot recommend the Xandari enough! It is listed as Number 1 on Tripadvisor for a reason!

We'd like to specially thank Lucy for helping arrange the amazing cake for my wife's birthday!

The Great:
- The Birthday Cake!
- Nature Trails and Waterfalls
- The Sunset pool
- The food quality and service

The Not-So-Great:
.... no complaints here....

Tips/Suggestions:
- If you're not driving, I suggest arranging transport through the Xandari. A driver was waiting to pick us up with our name on a sign. No fuss at all!
- If you're going to see the waterfalls, the staff offers walkie talkies. You might want to consider taking one along. The trails can be tricky, especially when it's rainy.
- If you take the trails after 4-4:30, take a flashlight just in case. Lat year we got caught out in near total darkness when the high valley walls blocked out the setting sun. Luckily, we had a flashlight and avoided sprained ankles or worse.

Room Tip: - If you're not driving, I suggest arranging transport through the Xandari. A driver was waiting...

This is the most beautiful hotel in the whole world- stunning views down the valley, gorgeous grounds to walk with waterfalls, lush vegetation and gorgeous sculpture. Designed with an artist's eye. Wonderful fresh food. Woke up to watch hummingbirds in the flowers next to our room. Though it's lovely to stay for a few days or more, it is also convenient to the airport. We drove out to the coast which is an easy and pretty drive. We had lunch at their sister hotel on the coast which we found disappointing- huge, unattractive public beach, roasting hot in exposed site and no real charm in design.

Spent only 1 night, but wished we could have spent longer. First location in Costa Rica after a very long trip from Europe, and it was as clean, calm, welcoming and relaxing a place as we could have wished for. The property is perched on a ridge, so you look out over wonderful views. The rooms are spacious and well-appointed, with a nice swimming pool to cool off in after a day out and about. The food was absolutely fantastic. But the greatest suprise was the property itself - lovely walks down to streams with waterfalls, a small bamboo forest, then an impressive garden, with a greenhouse some chooks and a couple of goats! Great way to get introduced to the country, and will definitely be back for a longer stay sometime.

We spent 3 nights at Xandari after purchasing a Luxury Link Auction package. We were in an Ultra Villa Plus, and absolutely loved everything about this beautiful spa resort.

Especially notable:

--the beautifully decorated and spacious room, complimentary items in mini-bar
--fabulous spa, great spa staff
--wait staff in dining room outstanding, personable, helpful
--wifi available in rooms
--beautiful views of the central valley, big windows, doors for viewing
--gorgeous grounds with a huge variety of plants and flowers
--fabulous pools
--butterflies and birds
--ease of check-in and check-out

We will definitely return. The hotel is obviously well thought-out and extremely well managed. We appreciated the little things, like all the towels available at the pool, convenient restrooms near the pools, and so many other amenities planned and designed to help the entire property flow to provide an ultimate experience! Tthe Luxury Link package was a great buy!

The suites at Xandari are memorable & comfortable. The views are unbeatable and the food is fresh and well prepared. This was our second time we stayed at thus hotel......and the second time that the guy with the weed whacker stayed within 20 feet of the pool the entire time we tried to swim------I know it takes work to maintain these well-manicured grounds, but buy an electric WW---at least for the pool area. Seems unreasonable that we are "two-for-two" on not getting to enjoy the beautiful pool. Also, Xandari offers transportation from the airport-----the reason to take advantage of this is to avoid the barrage of 100 (conservative estimate) who chase you down for the fare----to walk out & see your name on a placard & KNOW at 10:00 at night that you're almost done with the crrrazzzzy airport scene is such a relief-------UNFORTUNATELY, our prearranged pickup WAS NOT there, so after going thru the gauntlet of taxi drivers and searching for our name on a placard for almost 20 minutes (which, trust me---in CR feels like an eternity!) HE FINALLY SHOWS UP...... and gives us some lame excuse about our flight being early! Clearly, not the case---he was late, and the fact hat he was parked in the loading zone right in front of the airport (you can only park there momentarily) proved that he just drove up! Word to the wise---don't count on them for transportation. The hotel, however---WAS prepared and had salads waiting for us in our room for dinner.

We stayed here as a stopping off point whilst travelling through Costa Rica. What I really liked was the food and the staff. It was probably the only place we stayed where the food wasn't dominated by catering products out of the freezer - and what a difference it made! In combination with the genuinely friendly and helpful staff, as well as the views, it made this place a real pleasure.

The setting is great, but I wasn't overly bothered by the art and architecture. The trails were nice, although only really enough for half a day or so of walking.

However, taken as a whole, I think this is an outstanding hotel and the place to stay if you need somewhere near San Jose. Also, it's perfect for the airport - close enough to be convenient, but just far enough to get away from any disturbance.

This hotel is something else. Amazing staff, breathtaking gardens, luxurious and stylish rooms and a spa to die for. I actually made two trips in May as I couldn't bear to stay anywhere else on the night before I flew out of San Jose home! When I came back for that night (on my own) I was welcomed back like an old friend and felt so comfortable. The food is exceptional and the place just oozes style and relaxation. I've had the pleasure of staying at some fantastic 5* hotels around the world and this is vying for top spot. Be sure to make time for a spa treatment (the coconut wrap was incredible), a tour of the vegetable garden with Jose, the hikes to the waterfalls and save room for a pecan pie after dinner. And if you have bad luck and get stuck in the rain, a cup of tea, warm freshly baked peanut butter cookies and a film in the TV room is a great way to spend an afternoon. I can't recommend this place highly enough.
