This is one of the most beautiful hotels I have ever seen. It was like nothing I had ever seen before. The villa where we stayed (23) was decorated and designed like something out of a magazine. We were in awe the entire time we visited. The staff was excellent, the food was excellent, the guided hike was excellent. There are no words to describe how wonderful this place was. Very eco friendly as well. WE LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: villa 23 was amazing

We stayed one night. The windows in our unit were left open with no screens. We came home from dinner to fly beetles and others on the floor and bed.

The staff was great.

Bad way to finish a wonderful trip to Costa Rica.

We stayed 4 nights at Xandari and had a great time. We loved the sunset pool that overlooks the city. The tree planting was a special touch- a must for families! A very good variety of birds on the many trails on this beautiful property. Very close to the airport which was helpful when our flight was delayed. A superb choice for you first night in Costa Rica. Can be a bit noisy at night with mopeds and birds in the early morning.

We started our trip to Costa Rica here. The architecture of this hotel and the grounds are so beautiful it brought me to tears. The blending of the man-made with the beauty of the natural surroundings is incredible. The service was outstanding and the restaurant has an incredible view of the city. And, it's only a short drive from the airport. Definitely THE place to stay if you are looking for a hotel convenient to the airport or for a short get away.

Will definitely return. Lovely rooms, very good service, excellent spa. All sorts of activities; I didn't have nearly enough time to do what I would like to (see: excellent spa). There was fresh fruit and drink waiting in the room when we arrived; it was low-key but everyone was that great balance between friendly but not intrusively so. You can just walk around the grounds and be content.

There's only one serious drawback -- noise. No matter where you are or what time it is, there are regular sounds of ?motorcycles? racing by. It's an oasis, but just as you're relaxing, vroooommmmm!!! And the dining room at dinner is crowded; guests don't seem to get a preference for reservations, but that's manageable.

Room Tip: I didn't find anywhere that you couldn't hear highway sounds, but some rooms might be quiete...

I really wanted to give this place great accolades, why not? It was to be a wonderful end to a beautiful trip. It was a mixed bag of a resort; I will try to be helpful in my review so will break it down in good and not so:

The good:
Grounds are beautiful! To fully enjoy, hike down to the waterfalls, (#5 has a nice pool) and pick oranges along the way. Bring a camera to photograph the amazing bamboo. Many resources are spent on grounds keeping it seems.

'Casitas' are private, large and unique (high-end but very outdated) but all very clean with spectacular views.

Drivers/guides used by the hotel are amazing! Ruta Verde was the best! Allajandro we thank you for the amazing cultural tour of Alajuela (and our sneak away to McDonalds for the kids!)

Not so good:

No One In Charge! Compared to service at our other destinations (one top notch hotel and one very good hotel) service was spotty and akward when visible. I read the hotel is transitioning ownership to a remote owner and third party management. Clearly there seems to be more seasoned staff along with newer staff; but most of the time it felt as if no one was in charge. It was unsettling. The hotel just felt very strange, especially in a place like Costa Rica where the people are so warm.

Location is odd! We originally wanted to stay in Heredia to do 1 1/2 days of excursions before our departure. Hotel did not have availability so our vacation planner suggested Xandari. Nothing is near by but Doka Coffee estate and the airport. I wonder how safe the area is. It seems to be in a poor suburb of Allajuela although I didn't give it a second thought until a security guard greeted my young son and I after we left dinner and said he had to escort us back to our room. He shined flashlights in the bushes and walked us to our room. I didn't sleep well that night, listening to dogs barking on the property, wondering why we had to be escorted 50 yards. Understand that travelers want a respite before or after a flight. I think you can do better than the almost $400/per night at Xandari, given its poor service.

You need AC! We packed fleeces for this portion of the trip. I was expecting chilly of course, there was not air conditioning and we were in the mountains. We love this about Montana. There may be AC in newer casitas but ours was 'marketed' as not needed because of the mild weather and great architecturally designed rooms/windows. We visited in the summer and AC I feel would have been essential for a comfortable stay. We survived the Pacific rainforest with almost no bug bites and got most of them at Xandari IN OUR ROOM using screen based open windows.

Breakfast @ 7:00 a.m. begins late in my opinion for a jumping off/final destination close to an airport. . Rooms are outfitted with coffee makers to be fair, but given that Xandari serves so many guests coming from and going to the airport, I would think that they would at least get dining in line with guests needs. Staff seemed to scramble at meals, particularly breakfast. I'm an early riser and came out to use wi-fi at 6:30 and dishes from dinner the evening before were still on the table!!!

For $390 per night at Xandari, I would have stayed one extra night at our previous hotel and booked a clean hotel/motel close to the airport for next day transfer.

Thank you for taking time to write this review. We are glad you enjoyed the Xandari grounds, but sorry to hear we did not fulfill all your expectations. The lack of proper customer service during your stay is surprising, and embarrassing, since usually the service of our staff is consider one of our highlights.
None of our villas have AC since it's hardly needed. We do have fans available in the reception area but regret our receptionist did not mention this to you.
We believe there is always room for improvement, and comments like yours help guide us in the right direction. We are constantly looking for ways to make Xandari better, for example a night shift was added two weeks ago and now our reception is open 24 hours. As part of the new shift's we plan to include an improved breakfast for early departures.
Thank you again for taking time to let us know how we are doing.

We stayed two nights at the Xandari at the start of a 15 day trip round Costa rica. One of our suitcases (with all my husbands things in) didn't arrive until 5 o'clock the next day. I would like to thank Jose in reception for all his help in retrieving this suitcase.
The villa (18) was spacious with a fantastic terrace and view, one of the best layouts we have stayed in. We had two meals in the restaurant which were both delicious. If we had a longer visit in Costa Rica i would definitely stay
more days here , there are lots of lovely walks round the grounds and the three pools are a bonus. I would also like to thank Vera at the spa for one of the best massages i have ever had.
