Many great things to say. Be assured my review will not give enough praise to this gem hidden in the city of Alajuela. Giving a 5 of 5 rating for several reasons.
Leading up to our booking, we read several reviews and couldn't find reason to choose any place other than Pura Vida. Its proximity to SJO (airport) was important since our morning departure was about 730am.
The property is easy to find if you follow directions and signs. Though Alajuela is a fairly small city, it can be a chore driving with all the stop lights and traffic. Amazingly, once inside the property's perimeter walls, you will feel far removed from city life. Pura Vida is a well-secured property with a tall and solid perimeter wall. You need to buzz the front office for entrance from the outside. Parking is also secured. The property grounds are lush and true to Costa Rica. Find a hammock or a chair in the grass to read a book or to soak in the humidity. We did not see any other occupants and the grounds are very quiet, so this was a treat.
The Katydid Suite - a two-bedroom standalone unit - was our home for one night. Tastefully decorated and spacious with a nice layout. What a great way to unwind after a week touring Costa Rica. As promised, our breakfast to go was ready for our 5am checkout - a bag with fresh fruit, granola bar, and juice.
A must visit should we return to Costa Rica.

Using Fodor's Costa Rica 2008 guide book and acting on a suggestion of a friend to stay near the San Jose Airport, we selected Pura Vida hotel as our first, middle and last night's accomodations. The decision was perfect!

The buildings, grounds and hospitality of the owners Berni and Nhi and their staff are delightful! Being on the outskirts of town, we awakened to birds and chickens at dawn..which is perfect so as to have a full day of enjoying vacation!

The transportation to Pura Vida from the airport is included in the most reasonable rates. So are beautifully presented, fresh fruit and breakfast fare. A specai optinal feature is gourmet dinner prepared by Nhi and her kitchen staff upon request for an additonal fee.

Berni was instrumental in arranging a transsport van for three of us to travel to Monteverde cloud forest! ( A must see experience too).
He also connected us with Jungle Tom Tours for a stay in Tortugero National Park on the Caribbean.

We couldn't have asked for better hosts than Berni, Nhi and thier staff. the name of their small, beautiful hotel compound says it all

Pura Vida!

We spent the first and last night of our trip in CR at Pura Vida. The hotel's location is excellent. It is a short and inexpensive taxi ride to/from the airport (the hotel pays for the taxi from the airport) and to downtown Alajuela.

When we arrived in midafternoon, we were greeted by Rebecca, who knew exactly who we were and who was exceptionally pleasant and helpful. We stayed in the Volcano Suite, which is in the main house overlooking the beautiful grounds. The view is fantastic. The room itself was basic but clean and comfortable. Amenities included a coffee maker, fridge, and hairdryer, but no TV, phone, or alarm clock, which didn't bother us in the least (and actually by the time our last day rolled around, we noticed that they had put a radio/alarm in the room). As some other posts have mentioned, there is definitely some road noise, although it didn't bother us too much. An important note for some is that there are 3 large dogs on the property. We are not "dog people," but we found them friendly and unobtrusive.

The food at Pura Vida was some of the best we had in Costa Rica. Breakfast (which is included) is fresh fruit, yogurt and granola, breakfast cake, and very good coffee. You can also purchase some other breakfast items if you wish. Dinner varies day to day, as they buy fresh ingredients each day for that evening's meal. As such, you have to reserve a dinner spot in advance. On our last night the dining room was full due to an overly large group, but Berni and Nhi squeezed us in anyway at a table in the main house, which we appreciated. Nhi is a very acccomplished chef, and both meals were fantastic in flavour and presentation.

Overall, we enjoyed our stay and recommend Pura Vida as a good place to begin and end your trip.

The Pura Vida was the perfect place to spend our first night in Costa Rica. We stayed in the Toucan Casita and had plenty of room. There was a living room and a bedroom with 2 twin beds and a queen and our family of 4 was very comfortable. The room was spotlessly clean with fresh flowers and had every convenience you might need (hair drier, fridge, etc.). Berni (the owner) did everything possible to make us feel at home, including providing a snack when we arrived late and hadn't had much dinner.
The breakfast was included and was one of the nicest breakfasts we had in Costa Rica, with fresh fruit, yogurt, toast and more. The gardens on the property are beautiful.
We would highly recommend the Pura Vida for your first night. It's conveniently close to the San Jose airport, and a great place to start (or end) your trip to Costa Rica.
In the interests of full disclosure, here are the negatives we found about the Pura Vida (and these were really very, very minor and in no way should prevent you from staying there):
- There is some noise from the surrounding streets, including some traffic and roosters in the morning. Obviously you are in a city and there isn't much that can be done about this.
- The curtains in our room were made from very thin fabric. They didn't do much to keep out the light in the morning. We had to be up early anyways so it wasn't a big deal at all.
- The owners have 3 large german shepard dogs that sometimes wander around the property. The dogs were very well behaved and our kids enjoyed petting them. So this was not a negative for us at all. But I mention it for others who might have allergies or fear of dogs.
Again, we very much enjoyed our night at the Pura Vida. Berni does a great job of making everyone feel at home. Also, Berni helped us arrange a car and driver who we used for 3 days (Alajuela to Arenal, Monte Verde to Manuel Antonio and Manuel Antonio back to San Jose). Sterling (the driver) was FANTASTIC and I'd highly recommend him. He provided a 10 person air-conditioned van and was happy to stop anywhere we wanted to visit. He spoke both Spanish and English, and was very knowledgeable about Costa Rica. If you need a car and driver, just ask Berni and he can set it up for you. Berni also provided some advice on what to visit during our drives. He made planning our trip a lot easier.

We arrived at the Pura Vida Hotel at 11pm and left at 8am the following morning so our experience there was limited but quite positive.

We stayed in the Rainforest Casita, which was simply but nicely done with a huge, beautiful bathroom, cozy living area and king bed. The gardens on the grounds are gorgeous and it smelled so good when we arrived, we sat outside and just enjoyed it for a good long time. Breakfast was very nice and the dining area is charming, with beautiful views of the gardens.

The only thing I would caution potential guests about has been mentioned before - there is a fair amount of road noise at night. Our casita was closer to the road than some of the others, so we probably heard more of it than if we were staying further down the slope. But even so, we were sorry we hadn't planned to stay longer.
