“What a lovely start to our vacation!”
Reviewed 13 February 2014

Was our first night in Costa Rica. The grounds are lovely, the food is great, the drinks are even better. Was a wonderful start to our vacation! The owner is a lovely Canadian military guy and is eager to please! Highly recommended!

It was a pleasure to talk to you during your stay with us! Thank you for such a positive review! We have been working on some new drinks and our latest is a new blended mango, strawberry, orange juice, other fruit and rum drink - simply named "The Edwin" after it's creator!
I hope you had a great trip here in Costa Rica and do let me know if you are returning soon! It would be great to see you again!

We stayed at Hotel La Rosa de America our first night in Costa Rica. It was an ideal place to start our fantastic trip. This hotel has real character and charm. The gardens are beautiful; the staff is friendly, helpful and professional. I especially enjoyed talking with the waiter. Our dinners were great-both tasty and beautifully presented. Our room was more than adequate and visually appealing. The gardens are fantastic!
Breakfast was my only disappointment. There was not much left when we got to the dinning room and most of the food just looked a bit tired and unappealing. This was not a serious issue as we certainly did get enough to eat, but it wasn't on the same level as the meals we had the evening before. I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: We really liked room #3.

We appreciate your review of La Rosa! Your comments regarding our server have already been passed to him. He is a new employee of La Rosa and one that we are very happy to have! Thank you for such positive comments about our gardens and food quality.
It is regrettable that you did not enjoy breakfast and if the layout was sub-standard, please accept our apologies. We have talked with the morning staff. This is not a normal situation for our breakfasts - we take great pride in our fruit selections and especially our banana bread! Please, next time ask at reception if you need something that is missing from the buffet. Sometimes, we have a large group of people come in at once and empty things out before we get a chance to refill them. Our breakfast items are meant to be unlimited for our guests each and every morning so please do just let us know if we have missed something or if an item looks "tired".
Again, thank you very much for your objective review!

Hotel La Rosa de America was my first and last hotel stay for a bicycle tour of Costa Rica. The owner and staff were very helpful. The hotel restaurant served an excellent dinner and breakfast. The urn of coffee for the earlier risers was very welcome. The property is a short taxi ride from the airport. It is also far enough from the airport to seem like you are not in the city. There are also a few attractions close enough to walk to(approx. 1mile ).

We spent the first night of our trip at La Rosa.
Instead of getting a standard room we some how received a back room, that is far far away from the rooms in the pictures.

The room is placed behind the reception, actually sharing 2 walls with the reception Which means noise. I woke up around 4am from the bell alarm that rings every time the reception door is being opened. And it happened 3 time during the night.
To enter the room, you must walk through the restaurant. We checked in while dinner was served and checked out during breakfast, on both occasions we had to disturb other guests with our luggage and it felt very uncomfortable.

Instead of enjoying the hotel gardens, We had dry soil surrounding our room, a storage room (I think) and covered machines. I cant upload photos currently from my Phone, but will upload later on.

I was not aware that we reserved a low class room, I believe we paid the same as other rooms that enjoyed the beautiful gardens of the hotel.

We hoped to spend our last night in CR there but we wont go back to hotel La Rosa de America.

Please accept our regrets for your experience. This cabin has actually been completely upgraded inside and so is actually of a higher standard than our normal Standard cabins. However it is not a Superior Cabin and therefore the price is actually somewhat lower - in part due to the location.
Due to a number of issues, one being a significant drought in the area, we have not been able to maintain the outside garden of this cabin to the standard we normally expect. We try to be very sensitive to the needs of the local people and the Government of Costa Rica has indicated that the State owned water supply (Aya) is significantly short of clean water for this dry season. Therefore we are not using significant Aya water for garden use. Normally we DO have well water however at the worst possible time, the well pump broke and it took two weeks for us to replace. We are now recovering the parts of the garden that dried out and we hope that all these areas will be back and green shortly!
We are proceeding with substantial exterior upgrades to Cabin 12 at the same time. We are adding a patio and planter boxes, and we will be replacing the grass around it. We are also widening the path around the building so that guests can more easily pull their roller luggage. Finally we will be replacing the windows in Cabins 11 and 12 (and others) with new double paned, non louvered glass set in Teak frames and then installing air conditioning to these two rooms. We are hoping for this to be completed well before Easter. We believe that this will significantly alleviate your concerns about this cabin.
Thank you for your comments about the remainder of our garden. Again please accept our regrets for the state of the garden outside your room and our promise to get it back to the level of the rest of our property as soon as we can.

La Rosa was where we stayed at the beginning and end of our trip to Manuel Antonio. The hotel owner (Alexandra), Amanda (at the front desk), and Ruben (front desk) were all super nice and helpful. The "tipico" breakfast was freshly made and served in a pleasant setting. We did use the A/C in the room during the rain even though the temperature was mild (in October).

Alexandra set us up with a taxi, who picked us up at the airport late at night (dozens of cab drivers offered, but someone had our name on a board) and took us through Alajuela which was not the route I had expected. I could not have made that drive in a rental car. The number of directions, lack of lighting at night, sinage, and other divers/hazards was mind boggling.

The next morning U-Save was unable to pick us up according to the rental agreement, but Amanda and Alexandra were helpful in resolving the issue. Seems like that had happened before. I recommend renting a GPS unit if you rent a car. The drive doen to Manuel Antonio was surprisingly nice on a newly paved road system.

We had a large group of inconsiderate tourists bang on our door late at night, only to show incredulity upon finding out that it was occupied. Obviously not the hotels fault, but it was unnerving to say the least.

The grounds were nicely landscaped and fun to walk around. Overall, it was a nice experience.

I found this hotel to be just average. It does have very friendly staff, a beautiful grounds and a good breakfast. However, there are definitely hotels closer to the airport. I also thought the cleanliness was a little sub-par: there was a highway of ants in our room.
