Things are seldom as advertized however Rio Celeste did not disappoint. The river is actually a cobalt blue, complete with a beautiful waterfall, hiking paths, bubbling water from steam vents, and a magnificent view of Tenorio Volcano.
A bit of a challenge to find and get to, once there, it is well worth it! Recommended to walk right to the end of the trail (which can be muddy in places) as you will get to see where the river suddenly changes from clear to blue.

This was my highlight of Costa Rica! Although the hike was challenging (bring lots of water) it was the most amazing sight I have seen! The drive to the park is terrible (you should definitely have 4wd, and it takes more than 2 hours from Arenal Volcano area) it is so worthwhile! Never have I seen such a picturesque place! Advertising is misleading, it seems you can swim or lounge in the beautiful blue water, but it is not allowed, and the place was quite secluded, so if you ran into trouble, help wouldn't likely be available. Regardless, it was increadible to see!

We were quoted a price of $109 per person in La Fortuna but as we had a car we decided to do it on our own. I'm really glad as we ended up spending $35 for two of us with a guide (you can negoitiate). I personally wouldn't bother with the guide as there's not a lot to explain that you can't read over a page in a guidebook (and there are better tours if you want a nature tour), and our guide was also Spanish speaking only but it would good practice for my wife. We went at the start of rainy season so it's was fairly dry so I found the hiek pretty easy. If you can hike for a couple for hours in total with moderate hills then you'll be fine. In raining season it apparently gets very muddy according to the guide (like 6 inches of watery mud) so that's when you might want to think twice about going. It's also very hard to get lost. Once you get to the water it's very beautiful. The colours are really extrodinary and it's great to put your hand in to the boiling hot spring water! THere's supposed to be no swimming as the temperature can change to dangerous levels pretty quickly but i saw someone swimming anyway. Finally there's very typical Costa Rica style food at the entrance if you want it.

The Río Celeste is one of the national parks in Costa Rica. Don´t expect a lot of wildlife, but nature is very impressive. The wonderful blue lagoon and last but not least the amazing waterfall with all that colors. It´s a tough hike but worth to do it when it is not raining.

Waves and Trails Travel arrange a private tour with a nice organic lunch for our family overlooking the blue river, Roberto the tour guide was very professional.
