“Best Hotel in San Jose”
Reviewed 4 July 2010

We stayed in this hotel twice while in transit between the US and Panama. Cab-fare between nearby airport and hotel was $2.00 each time. Hotel was clean, recently constructed, attractive. Quick free shuttle back to airport in morning. Staff was plentiful, professional, helpful, cheerful. Rooms were neat, clean, roomy, and comfortable. TV in room included various US news channels. Free high speed internet in room. Complimentary breakfast (scrambled eggs w. ham & hash browns, toast, juices, coffees, cereals, milk including skim, etc.) was excellent. Denny's (didn't try), "Rosti Pollo" (Costa Rican chain with excellent service, great variety of rotisserie chicken dishes, and reasonable prices), and a bar-casino (didn't try) were all right next door. Despite proximity of airport, rooms were quiet at night.

This hotel was perfect for our nights in and out of the San Jose airport. I especially appreciated the screen in the lobby displaying live flight and gate status.

Rooms were clean and comfortable. Service went above and beyond--we missed our wakeup call, and the front desk worker actually walked up to our room personally to make sure we were awake!

Location is about as close to the airport as you can get. I'm not sure I would use this hotel as a base for tourist activities, but it worked great for flying in and flying out.

One word of wisdom--if possible, avoid the Denny's across the street. We ate there for convenience only our last night (we usually try for more local places). While the food and service were fine, this was by far our most expensive meal of the trip! Extremely overpriced, even with the 10% hotel discount!!

We were supposed to only stay at the Holiday Inn Express at San Jose Airport before our 6 am flight back to Denver for 1 night. However, Frontier canceled our flight & we had to stay in Costa Rica 2 extra days. The staff at this hotel were amazing in helping us deal with our canceled flight at 3AM! They gave us free International calling so we could rebook our flights and call our family and work to make alternate arrangements. They also gave us a fair price for the additional 2 nights when they really could have not, since we were booking last minute & were desperate. Their pool is outdoors, which was nice because we could enjoy some sun, and there is a restaurant and casino in the same parking lot, so you don't have to go far. Also they have "to go" bags of free breakfast for those that need to leave for their flight before breakfast starts (at 6:30am), and they have 2 computers in the lobby you can use to access the Internet. The only con I would say is the rooms don't have a fridge or microwave, which would have been really nice. However, I cannot say enough about how friendly and accommodating the staff was, and it was nice to have a more American hotel at the end of our trip (especially with the hassle of getting stuck). I highly recommend this hotel as a stop off point between the coastal towns & the airport for your flight home.

Altho' this is an American chain, this hotel felt very warm. The staff (especially Carlos and Rosemary) are dolls with lots of helpful info and excellent English.

But after a long flight to Costa Rica, it was the BEDS that I'm still remembering. Oh, so comfortable. I couldn't believe it. Since returning home, I still dream about the bedding!!!

We stayed two nights here after a late night arrival at start of trip and before an early morning flight at end of trip. The shuttle bus was very reliable and only ran back and forth to the very close-by airport - so the wait was never long. It runs 24 hours, which was very convenient.

We found the staff very helpful and saw them looking out several guests best interests on several occassions The hi-speed internet was of great convenience to us and everything was clean and as expected based on what we know of Holiday Inn Express experiences in the U.S. (except no cinnamon rolls if you know the U.S. routine -- the breakfast provided was adequate: yogurt, toast, fruit, cereal, etc.).

We did quick tours to Cafe Britt (north of Alajuela/Heredia - GREAT lunch buffet) and to Volcan Poas from here as well if you have a 1/2 day to fill. Denny's and a chicken place are across the street; and we walked to a steak house "Cencerro" just 1.5 blocks away that was excellent (there's a Chinese place next door that was recommended as well).

You might also check out the Hampton Inn which is next door - and consider renting at Thrifty next door.

travelling alone in costa rica for the first time was a little nerve racking but arriving at the holiday inn express eliminated all worries! the staff were so friendly and welcoming it was unbelievable! the breakfast was "typical tico" food, internet was free, travel services free, phone calls also free. at the end of my trip (2 weeks later), i stayed at the holiday inn downtown and the experience was the exact opposite; staff very unfriendly, service poor, and all services had separate charges. it was a very different experience and not that pleasant. i heard someone on the plane flying home also raving about the holiday inn express.

We stayed here for 3 nights whilst we went off for a rafting trip and before we left Cost Rica.

The hotel in clean and very comfortable. The rooms are nice (although the air conditioning in our room did not seem very effective) and it has a nice, refreshing pool which we used one afternoon.

The included breakfast at the hotel was disappointing and really the only thing that we could complain about. There are restaurants and a casino just over the road, but they are both fast food/Amerian diners.

It is very close to the airport and they offered a free shuttle, which was great. Of course, being so close to the airport it is a litle noisy as the planes pass directly overhead but that is probably true of all of those close to the airport.

We also did our rafting trip and the tour picked us up from this hotel. We rafted with Rio Tropicales and have done a review for this tour too.

On the whole, a great place to use as a base either when arriving or leaving Costa Rica.
