These cabins were a lovely surprise. We were expecting them to be rustic but they were clean and spacious! Loved having the end table and lamp and plenty of shelves/storage. I could spend hours on the back deck. The grounds are incredibly maintained. The family that runs it are friendly and helpful. I could not believe I did not see one bug (inside) during our stay. You can tell they care a lot about the place and take pride in it. Small details such as flowers, towel art and a welcome drink are nice touches. We loved the river out back and saw toucans in the trees from the back porch. Not right in town but very close. Side view of volcano but everywhere you are outside in la fortuna you can see it. Highly recommend staying here. Clean, lovely people and a lot of charm.

This was the first place we stayed when we arrived in Costa Rica. It is a small, locally run place with about 5 simple one-room cabinas. Each cabina has 2 beds, a bathroom with standup shower, mini fridge, wifi, front and back porches with chairs and tables and a hammock. We were traveling with another couple and it was the perfect arrangement to be able to end our days hanging out on our back porch with a bottle of wine.

Our favorite part of this experience, however, was the fact that we really felt like we got a sense of the Tico culture and got to know some local Ticos.

As other reviewers mentioned, the breakfast ($7 USD), is outstanding! Pinto gallo is the typical rice / beans mixture. I had this multiple places (it's a staple of Costa Rican cuisine) and the proprietor's pinto gallo with breakfast was by far the best that I had during my trip. They put some onion in it, cilantro and other spices and really make an otherwise simple, bland dish really interesting and special.
That is served with eggs, fried plantains and some very juicy, flavorful fruit (we had watermelon but I saw other tables with pineapple and papaya).

The Cerro Azul owners were friendly and helpful and although it's definitely not a high-end, luxury resort, it really was the perfect introduction to such a wonderful country populated with some of the nicest people.

Oh- and the location is pretty central to a lot of activities in the area- so that's a big plus there too!

Only draw back- no view of the volcano from the back porch, but a short walk to the street and you can see it looming over you. I didn't miss the view because the volcano was half covered in clouds the whole time anyway. And you see Arenal everywhere you go anyway. I liked the bird and wildlife watching from my back porch instead and saw a whole variety of birds and hummingbirds in the trees and bushes lined against the porch.

My husband and I stayed here for two days on our honeymoon. The cabins are very quaint and cute. The porch is great for relaxing, especially the hammock. The rooms are quite simple, nothing extravagant but it meets your needs. What really impressed me about this hotel was the breakfast. The breakfast does not come with the hotel fee but it is well worth the few bucks. Alvero, the owner, serves breakfast at his home across the street from the hotel. The typical Costa Rican breakfast he serves comes with eggs, plantains, rice and beans. The eggs have to be one of the best eggs I have ever had! Overall, if your looking for something quaint, simple, and a bit secluded then Cerro Azul is for you.

I stayed here as a single parent with my 3 children. It was perfect...clean, safe, welcoming and well located. We didn't have a car but it was easy to get into town - just a $3 taxi ride. Alvarro and his wife were very welcoming and Tatiana was wonderful, friendly and helpful with good suggestions of things to do. The cabins are lovely and well maintained and suited us perfectly. Wifi worked well. The river at the bottom of the garden was lovely for the children to explore and the Rainforest Chocolate Farm 20mtrs down the road does and excellent tour which we all enjoyed. The waterfall is also very impressive. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. Thank you to all the family - your hotel is delightful!

Great value! A nice little place with beautiful cabins. They have all the modern conveniences and if it's not in the room they have it somewhere for you to borrow. The breakfast is very tasty and I have no real complaints other than I wish they had a swimming pool.

My family stayed here for 2 nights. Very friendly owner and beautiful little cabins with front and back porches. We played hide and seek in the yard where there were lots of trees and flowers. Saw a toucan in a nearby tree. View of Volcan Arenal from the yard.
