This tour was wonderful. We went on this tour and thought how we were fortunate to have Stephen as our guide. (He spoke great English, which was a help as my Spanish is not.) When we met up the other group that was joining us, we found we also had Jorge as an additional guide. We had met Jorge the previous day on another tour. Both of these men were friendly, patient, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic about their country. We learned so much and had a wonderful time.

My girlfriend and I went on this tour and we had a great time. We were picked up early in the morning from our hotel and after the tour picked up people from other hotels were off. After about an hour and a half of driving we stopped at a small restaurant \ shop (inflated prices) that had tons of iguanas hanging out in the trees around it. It was pretty cool to see all the iguanas in the trees. We got back into the bus and after about another 2 hours of driving made it to the boat. The boat ride itself was really cool and we saw tons of animals. We probably saw the most animals of our entire Costa Rica trip on this tour. The guide we had was also really nice, knowledgeable, and fun. After our boat tour we had lunch then back onto the bus for a long ride back to the hotel.

Overall this is a great tour. Nice guides, lots of animals (though it's always by chance), and pretty good food for lunch. The only thing is the driving to and from the river is long so make sure you are ready for it (snacks, book, etc).

We participated in the Cano Negro boat tour while spending a few days in La Fortuna. We were picked-up, on-time, at our hotel in the early morning and we were pleasantly greeted by our tour guides for the day. There were 11 of us on the tour for that day which was a nice small size! On the way to Cano Negro, we stopped for a snack and coffee at Las Iguanas restaurant where we were able to view and take photos of the numerous impressive iguanas that live in the trees right beside the restaurant! This was a nice touch. This was also a great time to purchase some souvenirs in the restaurant.

For the entire bus ride to Cano Negro, one of our tour guides gave us a history lesson on Costa Rica and was very knowledgeable about everything that had to do with their country! He explained many of the various agriculture crops which we viewed along the way including sugarcane, pineapple, oranges, teakwood, etc. Very interesting! This made the bus ride very enjoyable!

At Cano Negro, we had a snack of juice and pancakes before we boarded the boat. The tour guides were extremely informative and knowledgeable of all the different types of animals we saw along the river. We saw many different birds (scissor-tailed flycatcher, warblers, piano birds, etc.) and the tour guides were able to show us a close-up photo of each in their Birds of Costa Rica books. It was very impressive how well they were able to spot the animals!! Our guides also spotted 2 different Great Potoo birds which are extremely camouflaged in the trees - so neat to see them! We also saw howler monkeys (one of which was albino!), spider monkeys, white-faced monkeys, caimans, Jesus Christ lizards that run across water, vampire bats, long-nosed bats, turtles swimming in the river, etc.! The only animals that we did not see, unfortunately, was a sloth. I think we saw monkeys on 6 different occasions so there was ample time to take photos and watch them play in the trees, we really enjoyed that! The guides also give you the opportunity to view the animals through their binoculars. The boat is very quiet, so you are able to sneak-up to the animals without scaring them off so there is no need to worry about boat noise!

After the boat tour we enjoyed a very "typical" Costa Rican meal of chicken, beans, rice, tortillas, salad, rice pudding, and beverages on the shore where we started the tour. It was delicious and I loved how they prepared a very traditional Costa Rican meal for us - I appreciated that! We also had the opportunity to purchase beer with our meal.

The bus ride back to La Fortuna allowed us tourists time for a nap, or ask the guides any further questions about Costa Rica. We were back in La Fortuna around 4:00pm which left us plenty of time for shopping and exploring the town! I highly recommend this tour for anyone who is interested in viewing the birds and wildlife of Costa Rica as you are guaranteed to see a large variety of animals in a gorgeous setting! Excellent tour guides, delicious meal - thank you so much!

We did the Cano Negro tour with our two small children and it was worth every penny! Jorge and Stephen were excellent, very enthusiastic, friendly and knowledgable. This tour was one of our favourites along side Proyecto Asis for animals. Lunch was excellent as well. Congratulations on a job well done.

We left early morning at 7:30 a.m. from La Fortuna and stopped at a restaurant (Cafe Las Iguanas) where we saw many iguanas, beautiful, huge, colorful, basking in the branches of trees in groups of three or four.

We then went through pineapple, bananas, oranges and cassava, where our excellent guide, Pablo, was explaining to us each process. He had books on birds and animals of Costa Rica, and he lent us binoculars and a scope to observe animals. On the way to the boat, we saw two sloths and a kingfisher.

We arrived at the restaurant (Carmen's) where we had coffee, tea, juice and delicious empanadas (Beef and bean) at the edge of the river.

We had a great ride: had the opportunity to see caimans, pied herons, darters, ducks, cormorants, howler monkeys, spider monkeys. Alfredo was also an excellent guide!

We had lunch back in Carmen's (chicken, beans, rice, salad, bread pudding - very good).
