“Gringo Pete's Too”
Reviewed 8 December 2013

I'd read the somewhat mixed reviews about both Gringo Pete's and Gringo Pete's Too, but decided that for the price, it was worth giving it a try (I stayed in the latter). And I have no real complaints - yes, there are rules displayed, but they weren't unreasonable and following them was hardly an imposition. I had a small private room with shared toilet/shower facilities for just $7 which was a bargain. The kitchen was fine, location was good - first night I was there coincided with the hostel being full, mainly with 1 group, so I sometimes had to wait for the shower or toilet to be free, but the next 2 nights were quieter and accessing the facilities wasn't a problem.

Pete's Place Too was just 5 minutes walk along from the bus terminal, so really easy to find. I'd recommend taking earplugs, as the noise from the road outside can be pretty loud (2-stroke motorbikes sound like tractors at 5am!). All in all, if you're happy to put your waste in the right bin in the kitchen and to check out on time, you'll find this hostel good for the price; if you want somewhere more flexible, pay more to stay somewhere else.

Room Tip: My room overlooked the road and was noisy - the ones further in towards the garden would be quieter...

We only paid unbeatable 14$ for a double room with private bathroom. From the upper rooms you even have the view of the vulcano (if not in clouds). Rooms and kitchen are absolutely clean. There's a big supermarket 1 1/2 blocks down the road and a cheap soda on the way with casados for 2000 Colones.
Juan Carlos will provide you with all information about tours around La Fortuna, about birds and about climbing the vulcano. For sure he gives you by far the best rates compared to any other tour operator. With him we booked the transport only to Rio Celeste. At any other place you have to take a guide or even a lunch what of cours mekes it much pricier!

First the positive: The hostel is clean, rooms big enough and there's also spacious lockers to keep your things safe. Also for a touristy place this is definitely the cheapest accommodation you can get, no matter if you rent a dorm or private room. The kitchen is very well equipped and has everything you may need for cooking.
The negative, as many other mentioned here - The owner (Pete), as well as his assistant Martha makes you feel as you are not very welcome. Plenty of super strict rules are presented in very offensive way, and any requirement or question we, or another guests had was responded as "No". If you'll do just a step out of the line, you'll pay or get kicked out of the place. We didn't break any of those rules, so our staying was luckily very smooth, but I just simply don't understand why anyone who visibly doesn't like people opens a hostel at his house ?

This review does not relate to Gringo Pete's, but Gringo Pete's Too,which is the second hostel in the town owned by the same guy. I had a private room for 7 USD, which is cheaper than a dormitory in other hostels in La Fortuna. Yes, the house is full of stupid written horrifying rules (e.g. you throw an organic waste to the "general" trash bin and 5 USD will be deducted from your deposit). But the guy running this second hostel is a normal reasonable nice guy, who does not make the guests uncomfortable as maybe the owner in the first house does.

The accommodation was very simple, the toilet had no paper for a few days, neither the light, so you needed a flash light to be in the tolet at night. And you could not properly lock the doors of the toilet. But what do you want for 7 USD? The kitchen was perfect, refridgerator large and working fine, wi-fi without any problems, all trips offered at budget prices.

So if you go to La Fortuna, need something cheap and are scared by "Gringo Pete" himself, go to Gringo Pete's Too, where the guy is normal.

Please consider other options. Not enjoyable! Management is rude. House is full of ugly rules. The owner is always there (he lives there) and he is not nice with people... I got kicked out of the hostel because I pay the room one hour later!

After visiting Gringo Pete's recently, I'm already planning a return visit. I think this is the best value hostel in Costa Rica. Helpful staff, clean rooms and all the facilities you need. They also provide tours at a lower cost than other providers. The location is ideal and very easy to walk to from the bus stop.

I'm sure most backpackers can work this out for themselves but the less than excellent reviews below seem to be written by people who belong in hotels. If you pay $14 per night you shouldn't expect air conditioning...If you want air conditioning go and spend $40-$50 a night and stop complaining. I thought the kitchen was very clean and never saw a hint of a cockroach but i'm sure if you mentioned seeing a bug to reception they would deal with it accordingly by fumigating. Check out times are there for a reason and if you don't work that out for yourself a late fee is very common and reasonable. Ok rant over, maybe backpackers expect different things in Costa Rica.

We had a cute and spacious room at 'gringo Pete's too' and our host (Juan Carlos?) was very gracious organised various activities for us.
There are nice communal areas to hang out as well as wifi and a communal computer. It's so close to the supermarket so we were able to duck around the corner and top up our groceries as convenient, which saved us money.
