Owner description: Previous Reservation is required. Proyecto Asis is a Wildlife Shelter and Environmental Education Center located very close to La Fortuna. Wild animals which have been found wounded, forsaken or are rescued from the black market by the local forest rangers are brought here. Those that cannot be released are used within our educational programs. In order to finance our shelter, we offer daily tours and volunteer activities. Schedules: Monday to Saturday at 8:30 am or at 1:00 pm. Sundays Closed. Easy access facilities and trails for all ages.

Our tour guide was very nice and told us very interesting informations about the animals. After the tour we stayed for volunteering. So we prepared the food and gave it to the animals. Though the entrance fee is a bit expensive, it is worth the money because you know that it will be spent to help the animals there. Went there by taxi from La Fortuna for 33 $ and back by Ticobus for 2 $...

My boyfriend and I did this the second day of our trip and it did not disappoint! It was so interesting to learn about all of the different animals and how they all arrived at Proyecto Asis. I also found it helpful to learn about the animals at the beginning of the trip since we then knew a bit for when we saw them again in the wild. Definitely do the volunteering part as well as it was a lot of fun!

Based on other reviews and their own website, was expecting more activiities for the teens.they were not impressed, boring and not worth the amount being charged. I suggest looking into this program in more detail before spending the monies, also, on the way we stopped by a local vegetable and fruit stand that had baby pigs and a sloth on hand, the kids had a better time there and it was free.

Hi srimanone,

TripAdvisor offers you to oportunity to share your viewpoint, but we do not share yours based on the following reasons:

- Our business focus is environmental education. The animals are not here for a "show" or for visitors to "play" with.

- Most of them were confiscated by forest rangers because they were pets, which according to the new law on wildlife, is banned in our country.

- Many babies are orphans who lost their mother from illegal hunting.

- It is prohibited in Costa Rica for people to take animals from their natural habitat, and sadly they use them as a strategy to attract people. This just stimulates the traffic of national wildlife which is the 3rd black market in the world.

We definitely appreciate your visit that helps us continue with our mission of preserving wildlife and educate people not only here at our center but also schools and towns.

Very worth the drive! We did the tour and volunteer in the morning and got to hold hands with and scratch the backs of spider monkeys in addition to feeding toucans, macaws, capuchins and all the other creatures they have. They also have cute "Hi 4 Like a Spider Monkey" t-shirts that we bought! All your money supports their awesome rehabilitation and rescue housing work, so GO! You'll never get so up close to these fantastic animals anywhere else!
