Description: Our cuisine features a contemporary concept, influenced by the classic European cuisine, Asia and Latin America, from an eloquent and modern perspective. Our steaks are locally produced, with very high farming standards; and our seafood and fish dishes are amongst the preferred by our guests, for whom our menu also offers many vegetarian options, made with ingredients which, in most cases, are harvested in our own farm, pesticide-free.

“Nice Restaurant but wish they had AC”

Nice restaurant in La Fortuna. Food was good. Just wish they had air conditioning. Hard to eat a meal in sweltering conditions but unfortunately they are no restaurants that we could find with ac.

“Dishonest and poor management”
Reviewed 16 June 2014

My two friends and I went to this place due to a recommendation from a fellow friend. The night started off fine, and we had the gazpacho to start. The main courses were mediocre. We had the filet mignon and the Pork tenderloin pancetta. The filet mignon was cooked fine, but lacked taste/flavor, as did the side dishes. The pancetta was very fatty and also did not have very tasty flavors.
As if the food wasn't already bad, my friends and I got screwed with the bill at the end. The waiter then told us about the wine specials that night, and said that one was 18 dollars per bottle. On the bill, it said that we owed 72 instead. When we told them that we were informed otherwise, they said they would only take 35% off the wine price. Ultimately, they were not on the side of the customer. I would not recommend this place to anyone and I warn you to be very careful when ordering at this restaurant.

Restaurante D, Propietario at Don Rufino, responded to this review, 9 July 2014
We regret this client feels this way about us. For the record, the actual price of the bottle was 80 dollars, not 72, as she stated. Her claim was that our waiter told her that the price was "$18", but in reality, he was saying "$80". We gave them a 50% discount on that bottle after she explaind to us what had happened, (according to her) even though there's little chance for this confusion to be authentic, given the fact that non of the wines featured in our nemu cost less than $30, and she was aware of this.

“Great food, high prices, weak drinks”
Reviewed 16 June 2014

One of our local tour guides recommended this place so we stopped here for lunch. We started with the ensalada de la Maison which was excellent (FYI: speck is basically prosciutto). I had the risotto kabocha and my wife had the grouper. Both dishes were well prepared and very good. This is an contemporary international fusion restaurant, so do not expect an authentic tico meal. But they do have a couple casado style options. Food was great but the drinks were mediocre at best. Mojito was bland and weak. Our total bill for the food and two drinks was just over $60 USD. The same menu is used for lunch and dinner, which partly explains the costly lunch. Even for dinner that would be expensive for this area.

“too expensive and not authentic”
Reviewed 14 June 2014

We came to Don Rufino for lunch and it ended up being the most expensive meal we had in Costa Rica. The food was not authentic and was not super good, and the price was hefty. I wouldn't come back.

“The opposite of arroz con pollo”
Reviewed 9 June 2014

We went here for out last night in town; kind of a "one last hurrah" of our honeymoon. We both had delicious food and drinks (loved the Pink Paradise... never would have thought of amaretto with Malibu). The price tag was hefty, but we left full and happy, and [sort of] ready to head home.

That said, I wouldn't recommend hitting this spot for more than one meal during your trip (even if it didn't make your wallet hurt), simply because it's not typical food. Costa Rica has delicious, simple, authentic flavors to enjoy! Our meal at Don Rufino's was lovely, but not much different from a fancy dinner here in the states. Save it for one celebratory night, and spend the rest of your trip experiencing something new. :)
