La Fortuna Backpackers was the best place to stay in La Fortuna without a doubt.
Hostel owners are very nice and helpful. Do arrange activities--such as repelling or Baldi--through this hostel! Rooms and bathrooms were very very clean. The stay was only $10, and towels are included (This was one rare occasion in Costa Rica where towels are provided!).
You will never regret staying here!! I guess the only bad thing about this hostel was cold shower...but really, it's not that bad.

Room Tip: Dorm rooms are fine!

A small hostel with a friendly owner. We had a private room with two beds. There are shared bathrooms and showers just off the "lobby". Not real private. Average cleanliness. We had little ants all over our room that invaded our bags. No A/C meant our room hovered around 85 degrees at night. Fan did little to help. Sometimes it's worth paying an extra $10 each for nicer digs.

Room Tip: Might as well choose a dorm room. Odds are you'll have it to yourself and sleep just as poorly...

Dear Supercords! we at La Fortuna Backpackers are really sorry that your 3 nights of lodging were not as pleasant as your expectations. With all respect, I want to mention that occasionally, when comes out that someone of our guests have some disappontment we try to solve it at once, if it is necessary we even change the room. Concerning the ants we fumigated the whole hostel every 6 months (nevertheless it is difficult to control in the humid tropics) we are always improving our cleanliness controls to avoid this situations maintaining a strict control, besides, it is important to mention we do have a full equipped kitchen to keep in the best conditions the foodstuffs of our clients.

ESPECIALLY, we want to thanks your comments; we do appreciate them, since it is the only way of improving our services. Once again, excuse us for the inconvenient.

Clean, friendly hostel with well equipped kitchen and basic but clean rooms. But best of all is the owner, Lilo. He gaves us great advice and booked good value tours and onward travel for us. Currently a lack of areas to relax in but Lilo is working on the garden and once the plants all grow and a few more hammocks added it should be great.

I stayed here a couple nights during my spring break with my girlfriend and one other friend for a very low price. We had a private room and it was very clean. The bathroom and showers were also very clean. The staff is very friendly. They are always willing to help and they have a cookout most nights. We rented a car and they even offered us to park the car inside. I suggest to ask the staff at the hotel before joining any of the tours, because they tend to be expensive. This should be your first stop.

I should start by saying I'm not a hardcore backbacker. When we first booked this place for 2 nights I thought "Well, if it's bad then we just lost $8 a night, no big deal, NOTHING anywhere was this cheap". We were SOO pleasantly surprised! for the price it was A STEAL.
It was super super clean, basic, but clean. We were lucky because it was low season and they gave us a room with a double bed in it (and a bunkbed we didn't use) for the same price! We had a private room, towels, soap and a fan for 8$ a night per person! AMAZING.

Everyone is so friendly and helpful too! We got our clothes washed for half the priced we were being charged anywhere else in Costa Rica as they charge PER load which also makes a huge difference. Oh yeah! fast free internet included (bring your own laptop though). They also have a room of bunkbeds for ladies and one for men only in case you rather not go co-ed.

Please feel free to message me if you have any questions!
