not an easy hike and you have to do it on your own risk. the government closed the path.It has been totally eroded by the heavy rains and all. But if you are up for a challenge, then DO IT!

We climbed that path from the fortuna waterfall side. It starts steep and it gets worse! Steps, mud and climbing from root to root. I will never forget that experience. We were quick 3,5 h up and down... but we are sportive and now are totally exhausted, possibly this hike is worse than the Groose Grind in Vancouver.

Longest hike of my life: 8 hours. I usually go on 1-2 hour hikes max in LA but this was a whole different ball game. I am relatively fit and athletic so I can handle it, but it was exhausting. However, it was such an amazing experience. You go deep into the jungle and immerse yourself in nature. We saw so many different animals, plants, and trees.

The trek is hard! You will be going up hill, sometimes using a tight rope to help you. You will be climbing rocks, almost repelling downhill. It pushed me to work harder, and I loved it! You will be sweating, you will get dirty, your shoes will be covered in mud, and you will look forward to the next 5 minutes of rain.

The 2 volcano hike is for those who are fit and athletic. But it was an experience of a lifetime.

The trailhead says this is difficult and should take 2 hours total. The difficult bit is accurate, as this is more of a scramble than a trail. It is muddy in areas and you should watch what you grab onto for leverage (we came upon a snake near the top). It took us closer to 2.5 hours, but we stopped a few times for water breaks. The view of the lake is not that spectacular, and if we had more time we would have trekked down for a swim. Hiking down in the mud is tricky if you are not agile. Their suggested distance for the hike (as well as some other hikes around the area) seemed to be less than what it was in reality. I notice there are a couple people who posted that the trail is now closed. We entered via the Arenal Observatory on June 22, 2017 (which costs $10US each to access the grounds) and it was open at that time. Maybe best to call the Observatory.
