Owner description: If you talk with the locals they will tell you to go to Scratch River or the Free hot springs. This is perfect if you are travelling on a shoestring budget as it is FREE! To get there go to the yellow gate next to Tabacon Springs. You can park on the road shoulder and you will definitely see it. Walk down the path behind the gate and in a very short walk you will arrive at a bubbling hot creek. You can go 24 hrs a day but keep your items in your site. Leave your valuables at the hotel and just bring a towel and prepare to relax.

Such an awesome little spot where you can relax and enjoy the natural hot springs! Just park across the street from the yellow gates (near Tabacon) and make your way down the path. If possible, bring water shoes as the stones underneath the water hurt your feet while making your way through the water and different tiers of small pools. An incredible experience that we enjoyed on more than one occasion during our visit to La Fortuna.

“Amazing!”
Reviewed 23 March 2014

Visiting them requires being a bit brave (you walk in to a locked gate, go to the left and climb under and underpass to get to the hot springs) and keeping an eye on your stuff but these natural hot springs were SO COOL. You can smell the sulphur, the water is the perfect temp to sit in all day. Bring some food and beers and even your camera (if you can keep it dry). Definitely wear water shoes - it's a natural riverbed and isn't super pleasant to walk barefoot on - and try climbing a bit back from the people (it won't take long -- we went about four pools back and then it became functionally tourist free) to relax.

“Free free free”
Reviewed 23 March 2014

This place is great. We went twice – why not – it’s free! I regret not taking any pictures, but we got sketched out by a sign to watch valuables carefully. The first day we went was a Sunday and it was packed. We were a little uncomfortable and felt like we got a lot of looks and stares from locals. We went back the next day and there was much more space (and no menacing looks!). This spring is very naturally beautiful. It’s a river through the jungle that just happens to be hot tub temp – good stuff.

This is a really cool experience and absolute free. It feels like getting in to a hot jacuzzi and also looks really cool.
I would recommend this if you want to see something different and something unique. Not many other places in the world you can find this fascinating and natural resource.
For being free, this is the best option to do in La Fortuna.

“Hot Springs”
Reviewed 10 March 2014

These springs were absolutely beautiful and a must do if you visit this region of Costa Rica. The water in the springs was clean, warm, and relaxing. It was fun trying to climb up the rocky falls to different sections of the springs. The nice warm temperature was consistent throughout and very pleasant. I also enjoyed the rushing water through the tunnels because I lied down on my back and it gave me a free ride. The overall feel of the springs was that of a giant natural hot tub. The trees provided natural shade while you could still find sunlight if you wanted. It would definitely be a luxurious getaway if you had a significant other. And even if you are single, as am I, you can still find joy in this relaxing retreat.
