I was not impressed with this hotel at all. It did not even look like the pictures but visability was not too good. The room was really old and worn. I did not find the staff in the dining room accommodating at all. That driveway was not a welcome sight after traveling from San Jose. The hotel is pretty far away from everything.

I visited many hotels in La Fortuna, but none like these one, the Arenal volcano view it´s unique, especially in the Chalets (rooms 102-104-106-108-110-202-204-206-208-210), you can see both, the lake and the volcano at the same time, lying in your bed, it´s amazing!!!
Rooms are always clean, the food excellent, specially the breakfast, and the staff is really kind and helpful, this is my third visit and will continue to come.

Room Tip: The chalets have the best view to the volcano.

We wanted to stay three nights at the lodge but a special event had all surrounding rooms booked. The young woman at the desk worked very hard to secure us a room for one night at the Lost Iguana (great place) and made several calls to reassure us our rooms were secured. We stayed in a standard room that has two beds, a coffee maker and nice restroom. The nature guide Miguel is very knowledgeable about the history, flora and fauna, and eco system in the area. Do not miss out on an opportunity to go on one of the hotels complimentary tours with him.
We enjoyed the Toucans he showed us and the horseback ride was an adventure I will always remember.
The restaurant staff was great; one of the waiters answered many of our questions about the beautiful tropical birds that fed outside the huge glass windows. Breakfast was wonderful with plenty of fresh fruit, fresh squeezed juices, eggs, rice and beans, pancakes, sausage, potatoes and more and was included.
It is an older motel, things are laid back, and they treat you like family. We traveled to Costa Rica to see the real beauty; we found it not only in nature but also in the people that ran the hotel. It is our sincere wish that one day we will go back and stay again. Pura Vida!

Room Tip: If you are looking for a bargain the standard rooms are clean and comfortable although no view. We d...

There are a lot of choices in the area and most would probably be better. The view is great, especially from the deck. The pool is tiny, the 2 Jacuzzy's (their spelling) were filthy. You could only get to the pool by walking through the bar/restaurant, across the deck and down the stairs/path.

The lower rooms, # 39-45, are unacceptable -- old, tattered, no chairs, and had a strange electrical quirk that when you closed all of the lights they would flicker. This means that current still runs, probably through the neutral line and that means a true fire hazard. We complained and asked for a different room. The day desk person told us that they were full up and we had no choice. The hotel was not full up, infact there were additional rooms of the same price available. When my husband lost it while in bed looking at the potential fire hazard, we went to the desk and the night person gladly changed our room. The rooms w/flickering lights were never checked or fixed (friends remained in those rooms).

The restaurant was terrible. The food was universally lousy, including ceviche that may have been ceviche a couple of days ago. The waiter was rude, did not answer questions, assured us of food that turned out just awful, and continually came to our table just to touch and rearrange the utensils. He must have grabbed my spoon, by the part you put in your mouth, at least 10 times during the meal. And these stories are typical of the customer service.

There was one shining light at this hotel. The gentleman who led the nature walk and horseback riding tour is FABULOUS!

This 3 night stay was part of a package. The truth is that I might have picked this hotel if I was booking the trip myself. The setting is out of the way and gorgeous. Its not for everyone. The 1/2 mile trip up the driveway is harrowing, at best. This is an area with tons of hotels. Choose another one.

Room Tip: Do not take a room in the lower building, #'s 38-45. Don't know about the others.

Arenal Lodge is off the road up a winding paved drive aprox 8 min.You are in the lush area.It was misty so we did not get to see the Volcano very well,However on a clear day this would be a great place see the volcano.
The rooms were clean,a bit out dated.
The breakfast that came with the room was outstanding as well as other meals we had during our two night stay.
The staff very friendly.
I would return to Arenal Lodge.I have stayed at two other hotels in La Fortuna over the years but would return to the Lodge

Room Tip: We booked the junior suite number 29..Very good location.

Arenal Lodge - We spent a couple nights here. We were originally booked into a standard room. After driving up a steep and winding road (about a 7 minute drive) we arrived at the lobby. We were originally booked into a standard room. We got the keys and went into our room 16. It was very old and out dated. It was situated behind the lobby with no view. We chose this property for the view of the Arenal Volcano. We asked for another room and she offered us the Superior Room which is located just below the lobby and restaurant. It had a view of the volcano, but this room was really out dated. As soon as you open the door there was a queen bed with a hallway leading back to a separate room with an old blue sofa bed. Our 8 year old daughter didn't really want to sleep in that room and I really couldn't blame her. We went back and she said for an additional $40 per night we could stay in the chalet at the top of the hill. We took it. The view was wonderful in the daytime, at night you couldn't see much. The volcano is right in front of your chalet. The property is very old and appears to only have had painting done to it. The beds were comfortable and the room was clean. The sitting area for viewing the volcano and valley had a wooden rocking chair, light blue rocking chair and a brown loveseat, all three pieces of furniture were old and had some cigarette burns in them. Our breakfast was included and has a very limited selection. When we walked in we asked the only person we found working in the restaurant if he could make us omelets since it was set up as part of the breakfast. He was grumpy and made us feel like we were asking too much of him. The food was okay, not real flavorful. We left for the day to hike at the Observatory Arenal Lodge and at the Arenal National Park. If we were going to return to Costa Rica, we would stay at the Observatory Lodge. The view of the volcano is better (closer) plus has nice hikes that weren't too long. Wifi only the lobby/restaurant. We did however see a firefly in our room. Didn't know that they had them there! Special treat, even if it is a bug!!!

We enjoyed the town of La Fortuna and would have liked to have been closer to the town instead of 20 minutes away at Arenal Lodge. As we walked around town, we noticed people selling tours. We bought tickets for the Baldi Hot Springs for $30 per person which included lunch or dinner. We highly recommend going to the Baldi Hot Springs Resort. It has 25 hot spring pools of different temperatures and a water slide. Don’t forget to drive into La Fortuna and save $18.00 per person on the entry fee. This wasn’t a timeshare or anything. It was a really nice way to sooth our tired muscles after walking all afternoon.

Room Tip: Definately upgrade to the Chalet!

Our family of 4 with teenage children stayed at this resort retreat in Feb. We had a room with a view of the Volcano and it appears that all the rooms have a spectacular view. The place is rustic but upscale meeting all our needs. Comfortable beds, view of volcano, excellent food, pool, jacuzzu, gym, wifi, wildlife with animals abound. We enjoyed the horses who seem like family now. Best of all we enjoyed the informative hike by Michangelo the offical guide at the lodge. If you are looking for the jungle but in comfort then look no further then the Arenal Lodge. We are Americans that live in Costa Rica and have stayed at many places in the area over the last 7 years. We will stay here and recomend this location for all our future guests to Costa Rica.
