“Clearly not the same hotel I read about on Trip Advisor”
Reviewed 1 January 2014

This hotel is very dated and not at all what the reviews portray. "Luxury at the front of its mind", "beautiful location". . . It is 40 minutes from Fortunas and all of the attractions that we were interested in visiting in the area. The rooms were dated and could not in any way be described as luxurious. We had two towels provided in each of the two rooms we rented (for 5 guests) and one of the four towels was completely frayed. The pool was cold, cloudy and questionable. The pool towels had to be checked out at reception which is a hike from the pool. The rooms have keys and if you are not prepared, it is easy to lock yourself out and the front desk was about a quarter mile from where we were situated. The restaurant was acceptable but not what I would consider 3 1/2 stars. It would seem to me that the very positive reviews are deceptive at best. The staff was very nice.

We have just come back from a week at the Tilajari resport and don't recognise some of the recent adverse comments on this site. Far from dated and run down, the accommodation we were in was spotless and modern. All rooms seem to have a view of gardens and/or the river and so birds and animals can be seen easily and regularly from the rooms. The restaurant area is also attractive and the staff spend a lot of energy cleaning the floors and tables. Food was good and varied, and the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. The hotel has excellent tennis facilities and other amenities. I can only compare this with two other hotels we stayed in in Costa Rica, and in other countries and can say that this compares with the best of its type. Highly recommended and if i go back to Costa Rica I'd make a bee-line for this hotel and its surrounding area.

Room Tip: Any facing the river - and most if not all do - spot the crocodiles

this hotel is a little out of the way but they are ideally situated for many local activities and attractions. the hotel can organise many activities for you, including those in the arenal area. on top of that there is a lot to do here from sports facilities and large grounds to walk around through to a butterfly house and swimming pool... there is even a river with crocodiles!this hotel is very comfortable and there seem to be various types of rooms to suit couples to families.the restaurant is very tasty for dinner, lunch and breakfast as well as being fairly reasonably priced. at breakfast go early to see them feed the parakeets and tanagers! i also recommend trying their cocktails... the planters punch is delicious!there is a lot to see here and it is a haven for people looking to relax or those in costa rica for the wildlife. we saw crocs, many birds, agoutis, geckos, iguanas, armadillos and more... take a walk around the grounds at different times of the day and keep a camera ready!

Compared to many hotels in Costa Rica which concentrate on the rain forest experience this one has luxury at the front of its mind possibly due to the location which is a bit further afield from the remote areas of the others. I stayed here for three nights whilst touring the country recently and was very please with my stay.
The room was comfortable and well fitted out with two queen size beds and a private balcony. There is a private safe within the room but you need to hire they key for it from reception at $3 per day should you wish to use it. Also unlike a lot of hotels in the region coffee making facilities are in each room.
The hotel grounds are extensive and include football fields, tennis courts, pool, gym and a butterfly house. I did however think the pool was on the small size for the number of rooms involved.
A lot of birds and wildlife can be found within the grounds which includes a river running alongside. The hotel also contribute to this by putting fruit out on feeders on the restaurant terrace each morning which attracts a lot of species of highly coulured bird life along for the treats.

My only real issue with this hotel was that there was a loud buzzing in my room all night even though the air con was off. This seems to come from a genertor that sits betwwen eacg pair of rooms as others on my tour commented on the same issue.

This hotel is the worst hotel of the full vacational pack we bought, it is far from the volcano area and also the rooms are small and smell bad. Most people we saw were people in thier sixties. It looks like a good hotel but later you realize that in the area there are much better hotels and also cheaper. If you are looking for adventure and fun you do not want to come to this hotel. it looks like more like an sport resort. Do not take excursions with them because they are going to try charging you even if you do not go. Do not give them your credit card. Also the excursion they offer are over-rated if you compare it with other companies in the city. Check other options before regreating.

Dear guest,
We are really worry about your comments and would appreciate to have more details regarding the excursions charges and credit card situation that you are mentioning, as honesty is a very important value in our company. We would wish you were express your opinion to our staff or manager when you were at the hotel, so we had the opportunity to fix as much as we could during your stay. We have talked with all the Front Desk staff trying to get more information and understand why you had such a bad experience staying with us, as this is something completely not normal to heard from a client. There is no report of inconveniences of this kind with a person of your profile.

Our tours are almost the same choices you can find in any other hotel in the area, rates are anually monitored to ensure we are charging the right prices for the right quality of services. We are around 25 minutes drive from Arenal Volcano, there is a map and plenty information in our website regarding our location, so we don´t promote the hotel as a volcano view property and we are really clear about the distance and kind of resort too.

Tilajari is a mountain hotel resort, offering many outdoor recreation options and lots of nature around that makes us a legendary hotel since almost 25 years ago. Guests come to our hotel to enjoy nature, sports and relaxation, we don´t promote the hotel as an adventure site with adrenaline activities or night life as discoteques or casinos, as that is not the concept of our company. We definely have many families, couples and elderly clients who love natural gardens, the river, animals and the quietness of our property.

Regarding lodging, when guests are not happy with their room normally they talk with our staff and we gladly give them another room or fix the situation in other ways, but is seems you never complain about your room.

Anyhow, we appreciate your comment due it make us work harded for improvement.

We arrived at Tilajari resort at night. The place looked nice then. We ate and the food was great, the owner was very friendly and even talked with us. Our room however was run down. We were with a group and some people found roaches and mouse turds in their bedding. I wouldnot recommend this place at all. Stay closer to town.

Dear Client,
We have read and analyzed your comments, it was important for us to get this feed-back due it make us work even harder in all the details our clients may pointed out. So thank you for expressing yourself.
It is true Tilajari is open since 1989, as we started as a Country Club that was turned or complemented to hotel a couple of years later. Since then, we have had several renovation or expansion projects in order to satisfy the market necessities. That and the warm service, is part of the success and popularity our property have with thousands of clients around the World.
When foreign people decide to visit a tropical country, they are normally aware of some conditions that they may found in the places they are going to visit, for example keeping such an extensive grounds and gardens as natural as possible for environmental reasons, makes us to strongly deal with some also nature creatures as gekos (little lizards all around Central America) and other bugs. These gekos are probably in every house in Costa Rica, and as a part of the balance they control other insects as spiders and small roaches. Gekos are normally harmless to humans and as they are around buildings is almost impossible to exterminate them all without killing other animals and breaking nature balance as well. What your travel friends though as waste probably was from Gekos due it looks almost the same that mouses waste, anyhow there is no excuse to find this on a room and we have strengthened our supervision in Housekeeping department trying to avoid this.
We have an extermination program running all year around, specially during low season which is in the same time than rainy season, where nature animals are changing their behavior to adjust to the new weather conditions.
During all 2013, we have been renovating bathrooms, furniture, bed linen and other details regarding rooms, besides other services and facilities. As we luckily have a high occupancy all year, this project is running slowly but constant to avoid disturbing clients with maintenance duties. We expect to end the room’s renovation in few months, moving to other areas to improve.
Please receive our sincere apollogies for all the inconveniences, and we encourage you to visit us again sometime to check on the changes we are working on now.

A nice place to relax halfway through a tour of Costa Rica.
Nice adequate rooms. If you have a room facing the river you can probably see crocodiles, in the gardens there are lots of iguana's and at breakfast they feed the birds and what a wonderful colourful display it is to see.
In the surrounding area there is Arenal volcano, a rain forest walk ,a man made trail over bridges and it is very good.
The hotel has a good restaurant with a buffet breakfast of good quality. The evening dinner is also good .

Room Tip: A river view is good
