“Beautiful Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 May 2008

We had a driver pick us up from the airport at 9pm and we arrived at the resort around midnight. We were shown a very cute and clean bungalow where we promptly fell asleep.

When we woke up that morning, we were amazed by the beautiful view of the volcano! During the three nights we stayed there, we enjoyed the complimentary breakfast every day on the veranda and saw beautiful birds. We hiked the path up to the volcano viewpoint (from the hotel!), hung out at the swim up hotspring, and had a very relaxing time. The staff was very friendly and we enjoyed our time at this hotel very much.

We did not have a car so we were limited to the resort except when we were picked up for our off-site activities. If we did have a car, we would have liked to go into town to explore a bit.

I would definitely recommend this hotel to my friends AND stay here again!

This is a great place to stay for the price. They have a large piece of land at the base of the volcano. It is beautifully landscaped with multiple pools, butterfly garden, and even a crocodile farm. Don't miss the breakfast. It is a wonderful buffett of fresh fruits, juices, cereal, meats, eggs, and made to order pancakes. The staff are very friendly and accommidating. The onsite activities are some of the best we experianced in Costa Rica. We meet people from other hotels that came to participate in the Zip Lining. The rooms are not much. But not an issue as we only slept there.

The grounds are beautiful. The restaurant had lovely outdoor seating and we enjoyed the food. The hot springs were good with lots of variety.

The room however left lots to be desired. The bed was uncomfortable and the room was not a place we wanted to linger.

The rates are fair and the grounds make up for any shortcomings in the room.

We stayed here for 3 nights in March. The room was very clean and pleasant and we had a lovely view of the volcano. The breakfast was also very good (otherwise, the food is average). The best part of our stay was the expansive grounds, including the multiple pools (large and small), the crocodile farm and the butterfly garden. The staff was generally friendly except for one bartender at the wet bar who seemed to be morally opposed to serving the gringos, but she was there only once.

My wife and I stayed here for several nights on the tail end of our trip (first half was at Villas Hermosas, Mal Pais Puntarenus). Like several of the reviews I’ve read, we arrived at night, after a very long day of driving and welcomed the large, well lit sign.

We found the property to be very nice. The grounds, while overly designed to the point of "manufactured beauty", were attractive/comfortable and we truly enjoyed walking through the butterfly, ant and crocodile exhibits as well as relaxing at night in the spring fed Jacuzzis (think the Mirage Las Vegas style without neon – not quite, but…).

Also, nice was the food at the restaurant. We had dinner the first night and the complementary breakfast the follow two days.

With all of that said, we were very UNDERWELMED with the rooms. They were unappealing, had that stale aroma of standing water and the bathroom plumbing constantly leaked on the tile floor. Needless to say, while our view to the Arenal Volcano was fabulous, we were not very interested in hanging out in our room.

  • Liked — The onsite amenities were very nice - pools, bars, etc. as well as its location to Arenal Volcano
  • Disliked — The room was tolerable. They spent their money on the grounds

We arrived at Los Lagos well after dark on Feb 18th, tired and hungry but glad to be at the hotel. The large lighted logo'd wall surprised me, but I was too tired to give it a second thought. We were in a group of 7 with three rooms scattered throughout the resort. We immediately headed to their restaurant, Las Palmas, for the most dismal food of our trip. The steak T-Bone (Special of the Night) was tougher then a tire and flavorless. The Stuffed Chicken breast was equally over cooked and inedible. When the dish was returned the server was not surprised and stated that "a lot of people say that." Our 6 year old wouldn't even eat his flavorless and overcooked chicken fingers. We began to worry about our selection for the Arenal portion of the trip.

The rooms are average hotel rooms. We originally reserved a premium room but we found out when we called asking where the coffee maker was located, that we were down graded to a standard room. (Uh oh - Strike two and three!). I asked if I could buy a coffee pot and was told I could get coffee anytime I wanted in the restaurant (fabulous! It is far! Ugh!). We went to bed wishing we had never left Ylang Ylang in Montezuma and fearful that we stayed at the best.... and were now left with the rest....

So you may be wondering why we have decided to give this hotel 4 stars. Well, the next day we ventured to Las Palmas for breakfast (it IS included in the room rate after all!) The breakfast buffet was good; fresh fruit, made to order eggs and pancakes, bacon, smoothies, cereal, assorted breads, coffee orange juice. Standard and edible (we were really hungry by then!)

Then we realized in the daylight the grounds!! This place is huge! Certainly nothing like this was expected! Their website sort of gave a smallish sort of ranchero type feeling.... nothing could be further from that. There are rooms everywhere. The resort is so big that it has its own canopy tour on the property. A stable packed with horses (and the cutest Lassie herding dogs!). A number of swimming pools with slides and a hot spring pool with swim up bar and really fun slide! Its own crocodile farm and butterfly and frog shade houses! The largest and coolest ant farm super highway I have ever seen. All that AND it faces the active side of the Volcano and has a super cool volcano observatory!

The point is we came to Costa Rica wanting adventure and here it was.... at our fingertips!

The Los Lagos Horseback Riding Tour of Arenal Volcano:

FABULOUS! The horses were marvelously well trained (no bits and neck reining!) and in impeccable shape! Our 6 year old was trotting and riding completely on his own and loving every minute of it. Our 60 year old mother who does not know how to ride was totally comfortable on her mount. The ride takes you up to the volcano viewing area, then down to the lily lake (a lake totally covered with purple lilies - you have to ask for them to take you here...no extra cost... just about another 10 minutes added to the trip) to the lake where a light canter could be done on the volcanic sand. Then back to the resort. This ride impressed us even more as we were taken to the "old los lagos" - empty hotel rooms from the previous hotel (before eruption) that were abandoned as the hotel moved to the "safety zone." This place is immense!

Do not forget to bring water on this trip.... You will want it... trust me! The bathroom at the Observation point is disgusting... use the woods if you have to.

Be sure to take your camera on the horseback riding trip. The guide will take it for you and shoot pictures of your group during the whole ride! The guide, Marlon, was fabulous! He took photos of all kinds of things on the trip and knew exactly where to position himself for the best shots....

The Los Lagos Canopy Tour:

Again we found ourselves with Marlon! He was fabulous. The canopy tour is not really the thrill seeking 2000 meter cords or 600 foot drops - but it is invigorating and perfect for first-timers! The longest cable was 250 meters and the highest was about 180 feet. Marlon rode tandem with our 6 year old and by the 4th or 5th platform he was doing it on his own! I highly recommend this tour. One of the funnest things we did in Costa Rica. Two of the women in our group were afraid of heights and they really enjoyed the tour as well.

You do not need to bring a camera with you on the zip line. A photographer comes along with your group and at the end you can get a CD with almost 600 photos on it for 20 dollars. The photos were awesome and very professional looking!

We loved the pools! The drinks, as the food, were overpriced but we were on vacation so we did belly up to the bar a few times.

The Drive to the Observation Point:

They say that a 4X4 is recommended but we drove up just fine in a Nissan Mini Van with 5 people. From the lookout point you can watch the lava spout and squirt even closer then the hotel rooms! Bring a cooler and a blanket.... it is a great night time activity.

So 4 stars because of all the cool things you can actually do at this place! This is a great place for families and the resort is really secure. Save your money on the overpriced mediocre food and treat yourselves to La Choza de Laurel for dinners.

This restaurant is fabulous! The ambiance is worth the visit and the delicious cuisine will have you coming back for more! The steaks that were cooked in the giant smoker were out of this world - Lomo a la Parrilla. The arroz con pollo was a big hit at our table as well as the Pina Coladas that are served in pineapples! Service was impeccable and the food presentation was outstanding. The 6 year old had plenty of options and the adults were more then satisfied.

3 Days is plenty here. Be sure to check out the cool shops in La Fortuna. We stayed in room # 136 "Vuelo" and could see the volcano perfectly from our room and porch. We witnessed the best lava burst from our room. It was incredible.

Hope some of this helps :)

Pura Vida!

My boyfriend and I stayed at Los Lagos for two nights in February 2008. We had gone into our stay with some hesitations - from reading past reviews, it seemed like the property would be crawling with children. But it wasn't - there were a few kids around, but it wasn't a big deal.

The grounds are absolutely beautiful. The hotel is actually on the slopes of the volcano, so be prepared for some tough walks up the hill! (There is a shuttle if you'd prefer.) But you have gorgeous views of the volcano and surrounding countryside. The lava flows were on the other side of the volcano, though.

The pools were nice, and we enjoyed the bar near the heated pool. The restaurant was a pleasant surprise. Hotel food is usually so-so, but we really enjoyed the few meals we ate here. There is a breakfast buffet included - full of fresh fruits, breads, cheeses, and a station where a chef will make you pancakes and omelettes. For dinner, we had fresh fish and locally-grown vegetables - quite good!

The rooms are a bit spartan, and I have to say that the mattresses in our room were hard. If we had stayed longer than two nights, I would've had a lot of trouble as I had trouble sleeping because they were so hard. We stayed in a deluxe room, which was equipped with a patio facing the volcano, a flat screen TV, and 2 (hard!) queen beds. It was a huge room, and it was clean. For 2 nights, that's really all we needed.

All in all, we enjoyed our time at Los Lagos. I would recommend it to friends (with a warning about the hard beds!). After two nights, we headed down to Manuel Antonio, but I wish we had spent another day at Arenal - the area is so beautiful and the people are much friendlier!
