Hotel Lomas del Volcan
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 27 February 2014

We stayed at Lomas del Volcan for three nights during our three weeks in Costa Rica. The little Costa Rican huts (rooms) were very nice and made even more special by the tropical grounds and fantastic views of the volcano. The location of the resort made it an easy hike to town in La Fortuna where we could walk to grocery store, bars, and many nice sodas with great affordable typical food. We ate at the hotel each breakfast and found at that you need to get there early as this hotel seems to fill it rooms with buses full of tourists that come in late and leave early. When we got down to breakfast the buffet was almost empty and it didn't seem like the kitchen was restocking. At in the restaurant one evening and thought the food was good and reasonably priced. Once again the bus had just got in and restaurant was packed…..not a bad thing, but you may want to work around the bus crowds.

Biggest complaint was at check in when we were given a room with two beds. I booked this hotel four months in advance with a very special note that it was our 35th anniversary trip and a king was a must. At check in they told us they had king beds but one was not available. They showed no record of my request……..yet I had a hard copy of my booking.com notation of this request and that didn't seem to make any difference. Didn't even really get an apology or anything….just an excuse of no king bed. Out of six hotels in CR this was the only one that our booking.com request was not noted or granted. Kind of spoiled the stay here. We made due.

This is why only three stars. Also had an ant problem in the room….big ones in the shower and little ones on the sink. Notified the front desk at check out.

Room Tip: Don't bring any food into the rooms…..brings ants!

Dear Paul.

Thank you very much for taking the time to write this impression about your stay in our lodge.
I was the attendant of the front desk at the momment you and your wife checked in that day and certainly we had no clue about your request. We must to let you know all the reservations coming through bookin.com come first to another travel agency here in Costa Rica. We do not deal directly with the people of Booking.com, and if this people do mistakes while taking special notes it does not mean that we are the guilty for those mistake. We were very clear in letting you know that we had no notes or reports that you were coming in celebrating your anniversary otherwise we would be ready with your special request. Just think this is our business and the way we make the way we live, we take every single detail and request seriously and we would like for the next time yu send us directly to our email address your demands instead of sending them to another ones.
Now, about the crowds at certain times in the restaurant that happens at any other places and is due you travelled in a very high season here in Costra Rica.
Finally, we are three stars under international standars this thanks to many other items under evaluation in our hotel: Number of departments, number of rooms, parking areas, access roads, apereance of our facilities such as paint, cleanliness, amenities in the rooms, rooms cloth look, handicap people accesibility, laws and regulations accomplishment and others including personalized service.
We regret that eventuality but unfortunately we were fully boked that night and it was impossible to satisfied your request that night when we knew about it.

Warm regards and please, next time send us an email at info@lomasdelvolcan.com, it will be a pleasure for us fullfill your spectations.

Lomas del Volcan had the nicest grounds of the hotels we stayed at while in Costa Rica. Each room is really a cottage with plenty of space between your neighbors. High ceilings, a big bathroom, a nice patio with a table and chairs are among the amenities. Along with the fabulous view, we had a large flowering bush next to our patio that attracted hummingbirds throughout the day. There was a howler monkey in the area which we heard each day but didn't see.

The hotel has a nice pool and hot tub. We ate most of our meals at the hotel's open air restaurant. The resident Coati was fun to watch as we ate. The food and service was great and the view of the volcano was awesome although it was mostly covered by clouds during our stay.

The biggest attraction in the area is the Arenal Volcano which looms large near the hotel. We took side trips to the hot springs, went zip lining and took a volcano hike. These can be booked at the hotel desk.

All in all, Lomas del Volcan is a great place to stay.

Room Tip: Unless you have a car, getting to the cottages requires an uphill climb along a cobblestone road. I...

Our family of 4 stayed for 3 days at Lomas del Volcan.
The individual cabins were very nice and we all slept very well.
The porches were a real plus.
The grounds were beautiful and plush with ample wildlife, especially birds.
Our family enjoyed the buffet breakfast and this was our favorite gallo pinto.

we were thoroughly disappointed with our stay here. The location and grounds were fantastic, however we arrived on the final leg of our honeymoon we were greeted at check in and presented our reservation and credit card. Once all payment details were taken care of we were given a brief tour of the main lobby and then shown our room. Only then were we told that we would not be staying in a cabin which we reserved and paid for and looked great by the way, we were put in a small motel style room at the bottom of the resort which was old and smelled musty. The biggest draw back was no view of the volcano which is largely why anyone would pick this hotel. to be fair we were offered dinner and a bottle of wine as concession but were not given any discount for a far inferior room.

Hi majmac!

We really regret that situation that day. As part of a daily work, some times things happen without a previous sign and we have to take decisions at the moment. Incidentaly that day we overbooked the hotel but it was not intencional and considering we are in the peak of the high season of tourism, it was impossible to moved you out to another hotel of higher quality, so we decided to keep your reservation at our hotel but in a lower quality room. It is true that we offered you a dinner included which was a full dinner with a bottle of wine included, also we offered you an excursion in the night to see the frogs or tickets for the hot springs of one of the most popular resorts in Arenal. We know that was not the room you had reserved but there was not other way for us to solve the problem we had that day. We really sorry and we hope you give us a second chance to demostrate our good will to compensate you in a better way if you stay here again.

Warm regards.

Imagine, a country cabin in the foothills of a volcano. Beatifully manicured landscape, tropical climate, picture postcard views in all directions. This is paradise or the closest thing to it. The cabins are gorgeous, superbly appointed and simply outstanding comfort. The grounds are imaculate. Birds, flowers, trees and the sounds of nature all in the shadow of a magnificent volcano. Excellent food and drink in the restaurant, a beautiful pool and a friendly staff that caters to all your needs. It is easy to see why this location gets so many rave reviews on Tripadvisor. It is truly a Costa Rican jewel that must be experienced. It is truly a place which is very hard to leave.

Room Tip: There isn't a bad room on the premises.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. We had lodge 507 and had a wonderful view of the volcano all the time we were there. The lodge was lovely and we especially enjoyed the private balcony where we sat and watched the birds, also watched the resident coati! Up its own long driveway Lomas is well away from any traffic noise so it was lovely and quiet. The grounds are well kept, staff polite and friendly, food is plentiful. I would recommend the hotel to everyone.

Thank you very much for your contribution to this site regarding your stay at our hotel.
Why the low score if we can read that everything was perfect for you at our facilities?
If something was not good at all please get in contac at info@lomasdelvolcan.com and this way we may change the direction the way we are doing the things here.

The grounds at Lomas del Volcan are very beautiful. We had a cabin at the very end which was a 5 to 10 minute steep uphill walk from reception and the restaurant. The cabin was very nice with a balcony and a large bathroom. The only drawback to the hotel is the distance from town. If you don't have a car you need to take a taxi to get anywhere (about $6 to town). We walked once and it took about 45 minutes along a dusty road.
We walked along the wildlife trail but only saw a small frog. We saw a coati, parakeets, toucans and other birds in the hotel grounds. We were stumped by a chirping sound from our roof whenever we were in our cabin and then learned that it was geckos.

Hi.

Thank for you time and for this feedback about your experience in our mountain lodge.
Since we are a rain forest lodge we are far apart from the noisy town of La Fortuna and from the road that run to the Arenal Volcano. The acces road to our hotel is far as 1,5Km from the main one and part of it is gravel and part is made of concrete bricks, getting to our hotel without a car is a hard task but not impossible, and as you mentioned, there is a taxi service running all day long from and to the town and getting a taxi is very easy. We really appreciate your effort to come and stay with us considering that you did not have a transportation mean and despite of this you decided to come and share with us. For the next time you know already the conditions to get to Lomas and this way you can get ready renting a car, this way you can move around easily and come and go without spending extra money.

Warm regards and see you the next time.
