“Great hotel to see the Arenal volcano”
Reviewed 15 February 2010

Service was good, rates were reasonable, food was good and the view of the Arenal volcano cannot be beat. Also located right in the middle of town so walking to anywhere in town is easy. Website is:http://www.lafortunahotel.com

I could not believe how great this hotel is for the price. Clean rooms, friendly staff,& excellent location. I had a great view of Arenal Volcano from my room. I was a 63 yr old solo female traveler. I had read some reviws & booked directly from their site. Close to shops & restaurants. Every one I met so friendly & helpful. Wonderful little community. Clean hotel .

Hotel Fortuna is centrally located in the town of La Fortuna, one block from the park and church , you can walk to everthing, so it's ideal if you don't have your own wheels. Fortuna is situated on the green side of the volcano, so don't expect to get a lava view from here, but many tours can arrange it. The Arenal National Park itself is about a 10 - 15 minute drive from the town, but when and if, the cloud lifts from the peak of the vocano you can see it from just about anywhere.
The four storey hotel itself is only about two years old and so is up to modern standards and building codes and is very well kept, so you really can't go wrong here, and they pride themselves on being completely wheelchair accessible. The value here was excellent, we paid only $65 per night for three adults in a double room on the third floor with a volcano view, and that included a continental breakfast of toast, fruit plate and coffee, which was served in the bar / restaurant on the ground floor. They had a jazz band performing here one one evening which was very loud in our room, but they were finished by 10pm, so it did not cause us any problem.
Rooms at Hotel Fortuna are bright and clean, the bathrooms are spacious, though the room itself could have been slightly larger. They all have cable TV, A/C and sliding glass doors that open onto a half balcony. Though surrounded by busy streets, the outside noise did not bother us at all in the room with the door closed and the A/C on.
The only negative here, if there is one, is that the place lacks local flavour and ambiance and feels more like a Holiday Inn or Best Western, but even so, now looking back at our three week stay in C.R. in which we traveled around and stayed at several different hotels, this place was one of my favorites and I would absolutely stay here again.

Hotel La Fortuna is certainly acceptable in terms of cleanliness but there is absolutely no character to it. It consists of an assortment of rooms with nothing else to offer. Considering the price of local hotels, La Fortuna hotel isnt cheap at all. I had read that the water from the shower spills all over - you have see it to believe it - what a mess!!! What they serve you in the name of "continental" breakfast is absolutely unacceptable. It consists of coffee, 1 small glass of OJ, a few small pieces of pineapple and papaya, and 2 pieces of hard toast with a tiny dollop of jelly. The coffee is supposedy unlimited but good luck on getting a second cup! They push too many tours on you - some nice and some absolutely worthless. This is true of many hotels all over CR - do your own research.

This hotel was a breath of fresh air after a harrowing week in Costa Rica. I was thrilled with the amenities - pretty lobby, clean and well-appointed rooms, hot water and great water pressure (this, I discovered, was hard to find in this price range at other hotels in CR) breakfast included, free internet 24/7, and awesome helpful staff that spoke great English. And, to boot, we paid $50 US dollars per night (this was during the low season in July). If American-type hotels are your thing when traveling, this is the closest you'll come BY FAR for this price range. Otherwise, you'll have to dish out big money for the high end resorts for the same services. I give this hotel a big shiny "A"

Just down the street from Don Rufino and Pito Pito, assured as of fantastic food and drinks only a few steps from the hotel. The hotel owners and staff were generous and quick to assist with any needs. They can guide and suggest how to enjoy your visit the max. Great location to start and end many activities. Lorena (the owner), Manrique at the front desk and Mercedes at the bar contributed immensely to our vacation.

Just got back from 10 days in costa rica, and Hotel La Fortuna was the shining surprise of the places we stayed! I actually thought I was in the wrong building when my brother and I arrived - we were paying only 20 dollars per person per night. Manrique at the front desk was very nice and super helpful. There is a nice open air bar and restaurant downstairs, and they had a live guitarist the Saturday night that we were there. We wished that all the hotels we had were on par with Hotel La Fortuna. We enjoyed the free internet and being within walking distance to many places to eat and shop. The cabs are pretty cheap there as well, so it's not hard or $$$ to get to where you want to go.
