“Quiet and relaxing”
Reviewed 1 May 2012

Pros: This hotel is a several miles from downtown Fortuna, which can be really noisy
until the wee hours. The hotel is surrounded by similar spa/resort types and the area is very
quiet, and relaxing. All rooms seem to have some view of the volcano. The breakfast spread
was amazing!

Cons: It is far from the city and one has to take a taxi ($10 each way) to get there. There is really
nothing to do around the hotel and even though the restaurant is pretty nice it can get boring
after two meals and after a day at the hotel one might resort to taking multiple trips to Fortuna.

The service was just OK. We were there for two nights. The second night there was some
sort of power outage and the entire area was without power. The restaurant seemed ill equipped for a such a situation and served only pasta with red or white sauce. Also they charged us an exorbitant for the meal which I thought should have been free given the circumstance.

My husband and I were here for 3 nights. We loved it. The rooms are all individual cottages with decks. They are nice and rustic. Comfy and clean. The AC was great. The hotel staff was super nice. The bartender at the pool was super great! They helped us plan day trips and those were great too. The only bad thing is that we did not have a car so we were stuck there at night. The food there was really good but it got expensive. We would stay here again!!!

Room Tip: Ask for the ones overlooking the man made lake facing the Volcano. we had the one at the very end...

I was not so sure about how great the standards of this hotel was going to be since my stay was a part of a Living Social deal. Well, I was very happy with everything. It actually surpassed my expectations. The hotel upgraded us to a suite since it was available. The dinning room/resturant has spectacular views of the volcano, our room also had a view of the volcano. The room was spacious and clean with an outdoor patio area to enjoy the beautiful landscape, birds, and views. The only thing that I would add to the room would be a screen door. There were times when we wanted to leave the patio door open for fresh air and the sounds of the singing birds but could not without bugs flying into the room. The pool area is a decent size with a separate small kiddie pool. The main jacuzzi was broken throughout our stay but they let us use the jacuzzi in the spa area, which was actually nicer because its indoors and gives you use of the dry sauna. I did use the spa services and got a massage and facial. The massage was just okay and more like a body rub then a true massage, same for the facial, just mediocre at best. The staff was very friendly and happy to accomdate any of our request. Last day of our stay, I discovered a trail near the spa that leads down to the river. It is very slippery but very beautiful, put on your hiking boots and take it. If I would have found it sooner I do not think I would have spent extra money on another guided activity. Food at breakfast buffet had enough varity for me, and the made to order omlettes were yummy. Ate here twice for dinner. The meals were good, but not good enough for the expensive price. Other nights we opted to go into town and the price of the cab fare plus the meal we ate came to about $10 less then what we spent eating at the hotel. Would definitely stay here again but eat elsewhere to save money.

The hotel is situated right at the foot of the volcano,so if you are lucky you can see its top cloudless in the morning hours directly from the resraurant. The rooms are very spacious, clean and good beds. Quiet location near a hiking trail. Breakfast and dinner buffet are plentyfull and good. You can make trips by quad,on horseback or sky treks from the hotel. The friendly staff gladly helps. Free Wi-fi in the lobby. Unfortunately the Arenal is very quiet since Sept. 2011 so don't expect to see any lava flows and glows in the dark. The hotel had one of the best rooms during my round trip in Costa Rica.

Stayed at Montana de fuego for four nights. We were in a Jr suite room was nice, clean had a great view of Arenal volcano. Grounds were beautiful enjoyed walking around the property. There is a group of four or five howler monkeys that hang around behind the spa.

The motel is about an hour walk from La Fortuna or a twelve dollar cab ride each way. There are a lot of great places to eat in La Fortuna. The motel does have a nice restaurant but is over priced.

Enjoy your stay!

This was our first stop on our Costa Rica vacation. We spent two nights here, then headed off to a luxury resort on the Pacific coast.
First, it's a quiet place. There's no night life here. That was great, since we were tired and wanted to sleep each night.
Second, the pool is cold. My daughter went in and loved it. But she's an ice skater, and here sense of cold is very "off." None of the rest of us went in past our toes. Really cold.
Third, the rooms are fine. I've stayed in worse; I've stayed in better. I guess some might have a different opinion, but in reality they were fine. They were clean, though they smelled of damp. They were dark (bring a flashlight) because of the wood paneling and the energy-efficient bulbs. They were in the jungle, which brings a certain set of challenges to the hotel management. The maintenance has to be constant. There are tropical creatures who live nearby and didn't get the memo about staying out. An aside: at our luxury resort there were no bugs, even though the hallways were open-air. Want to know why? Because every night workers sprayed the hallway and door frames with insecticide. I saw them doing it, and it made me wonder if maybe a few bugs aren't such a bad thing.
Fourth, the volcano views are amazing. Some of the "nicer" hotels in the area don't have these views. Decide for yourself why you decided to come to this part of the world . . .
Fifth, the restaurant was very good. We all enjoyed the included breakfast buffet. We ate lunch there one day and enjoyed it, as well. However, if we had had enough time to eat elsewhere that day we would have.
Sixth, the "on-site" activities were terrific. Check the website for "go adventure park" and check montana tours. Prices are not always accurate, because the website needs updating.
Next, the workers were all very kind, friendly, and helpful.
And lastly, I think this place is very close to becoming one of the nicer resorts in the area. They need to get ahead of their maintenance issues, and they need to market their on-site activities better and keep their website updated. If they do this, they will surpass their similarly priced competition. If not, they will fall behind.

We did not use the spa, so have nothing to remark upon it.

Room Tip: Room 206 is close to the restaurant, the lobby building, and the pool, which is a plus for some. It...

This hotel did not disappoint. Great location, nice clean rooms, super view, friendly and helpful staff. Close to many of the local area attractions. Only downfall was the matress on the pullout couch - it did NOT pass for a 2nd bed, would have been more comfortable to sleep on the floor.
