“Great value!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 May 2011

We just visited Volcano Lodge and had a wonderful experience. It is a simple, yet beautiful place with lovely gardens and a very warm and friendly staff. It is a great great value with clean and quiet rooms, in a convenient location to all the activities and places to visit in the Arenal region. While it is not a 5-star hotel, it has the basic amenities you would expect and will meet all of your travel needs. I would highly recommend it!

Very well kept grounds and outstanding service. The moment you arrive you are greeted with a smile and some great fruit juice. The front desk personnel are outstanding.

The facility is very well maintained and contains a vast array of plants in extensive gardens. You will love it! Also the view of the Volcano is outstanding.

Every morning we enjoyed the excellent breakfast and in the late afternoon we love the pool!

I highly recommend the Volcano Lodge

The Volcano Lodge is situated perfectly between the town of La Fortuna and Arenal (a very short drive to each). I found this place online and the price couldn't be beat, especially compared to its neighbor resorts. The staff was extremely friendly, and the property is beautiful! It is on a large plot of land that has a trail all the way around it. The pool is average-sized, and the hot tub is awesomely oversized! Both offer terrific views of Arenal. We were also able to get WiFi right at the pool while we enjoyed their daily 2-for-1 Happy Hour. The breakfast buffet was delicious and the largest we saw in all of our travels. The room was very clean, quiet, comfortable, and had an unbeatable view. The bathroom was also very large. Things we did while there included hiking from the Observatory Lodge (a 20min drive, but a must!) and visited Baldi Hot Springs (another must!...but buy your tickets from a hotel/tour place in town...they're cheaper and come with the buffet). I would highly recommend The Volcano Lodge to others, and certainly plan on returning.

Room Tip: Ask for a room near the back pool/breakfast area

Location: You will be about a 10 minute drive from La Fortuna and about 15 minutes from Arenal National Park, so if you don't have a car it won't be the most convenient of locations. If you do, it's great.

Amenities: Very nice pool and hot tub. The tropical gardens were beautiful. WiFi was available in common areas, but didn't reach our guest room. A free, easy-to-use safe was provided in the room.

Food: Onsite restaurant (Surá) had very good (if somewhat pricey) food. Open late for dinner. The breakfast buffet (included in our room charge) was excellent; any time I can gorge on fresh fruit in the morning I'm a happy guy.

Service: Excellent. The hotel staff was friendly, and was extremely helpful in booking tours. Know that any hotel in Costa Rica will have arranged agreements with "preferred" providers, so not every single tour outfitter in town will be represented. However, we went on multiple tours through the hotel, and they were all top-notch.

Room: Our room was very nicely decorated, with a large patio out back. We had a "volcano view" room (#320), and the view was tremendous (at least when the clouds cooperated). Room was very spacious.

Things that could be better:
1. You have to keep a key in the switch to keep any of the lights or AC on. A minor annoyance, except when you're coming back to a pitch-black room and trying to get the lights on.
2. The beds are super-firm, which seemed to be the norm in Costa Rica. I am used to plush bedspreads, and I managed to sleep fairly well.
3. The walls are thin. The first two nights, we had no neighbors and things were great. The last night, you could hear the soccer game and resulant cheers from the next-door guests. They went to bed at a reasonable hour, but a more raucous group might be a problem.

Room Tip: Volcano View - Large rooms, great view

Beautiful gardens and very good view of volcano from each room. If you stay more than two nights you are likely to feel isolated. No way to get out of this place except by car or tours. The restaurant has decent food, but the menu is monotonous after the first day. Small swimming pools, not worthy of the name "pool."

My wife and I stayed here on our first-anniversary trip to Costa Rica, and we very much enjoyed it. The room was good-sized and the bed fairly comfortable, a bit on the firm side. The bathroom was large, with a large walk-in shower. The volcano was covered in clouds for the whole three days we were there, but the staff assured us that the view out the large plate-glass window of our room would have been great! The grounds are beautifully manicured, with lots of flowers, a pleasure to walk through. There's also a very short trail into a patch of jungle. We even saw two toucans in a tree by the office! The staff were very helpful, and most speak English. They arranged our tours for us. Every day, we would have a different towel sculpture prepared on the bed, and they were the best we'd ever seen! Our first meal at the lovely open-air restaurant was disappointing, with soggy, greasy chips and overdone meat, but the other 5 times we ate there, the food was very good. The breakfast was included and was excellent, with custom-cooked omelettes and all.
One thing to realize is that the area of La Fortuna is fairly spread out, so that there are few other places near enough to walk. The Tabacon hot springs are about a 15-minute car ride away, and the town about a 5-minute ride. Unless you have a car, you're pretty much restricted to the on-site restaurant. Plates tend to be about $10 and up.
Overall, a very good place to stay, and a decent value. (I emailed the hotel directly, and they matched expedia's price.)

This is a fully remodled ranch style resort. Very much in keeping with th e native Costa Rica charm. The rooms are large and have new furniture and beds, many have unobstructed views of the volcano. The staff is always friendly and ready to assist. I was traveling with my 2 teenaged kids who usually can't wait to leave the hotel. Here we found ourselves just enjoying the large freshwater pool and large covered adjacent dining area. The free wifi and fruit smothies (not free) may have played a part. Great location and very quiet and relaxing. This is a very good choice

Room Tip: We had room 221-223, center and near pool
