This was not my first trip to Costa Rica, but my first trek to Arenal. Easy drive from Liberia Airport to Volcano Lodge, nevermind the windy mountainous roads and occassional mudslide, which are to be expected. It will take about 3.5 hours despite the distance, don't be fooled. Try to drive it in daylight if you can, as it is a gorgeous view. The Volcano Lodge has beautifully maintain grounds and everything is within walking distance. The rooms were immaculate and all the staff friendly and helpful. Very good English spoken by a majority of the staff. Take your earplugs if night noises bother you, as there is a loud-spoken cow nearby and the rains on the tin roofs sound like a heard of elephants, in a nice way. The pools and hottub are nice and the food is wonderful and reasonably priced. You can sit beside the pool in the morning for the buffet breakfast, fire up your internet, and also view the clouds receding from Arenal (if you're lucky). I recommend having a vehicle, as there is alot to see and do in the area and the resort is fairly isolated. La Fortuna, a small town a few miles away has the typical touristy attractions and also a decent Mega Super. An hour or two there, and you'll be done. If you plan to go to the Smithsonian Observatory Lodge, plan on taking your time, as it is the most pot-holed road I have ever encountered, bordering on ridulously funny. For this reason, I am so glad we didn't stay there! We are so happy that we spent four days at Volcano Lodge before returning to our addiction, the northern pacific coast, Ocotal area in Guanacaste.

all the rooms in this are spread over a good amount of area. my husband and i got there in the evening in the pouring rain. one of the staff members loaded a little covered cart with our luggage and drove us to our room which felt like it took forever (but the darkness and the rain had to do with that). the room itself was plain but very spacious and clean. in the morning when the rain had stopped, we took a nice walk to the restaurant for breakfast and then to the front office. the area is very well kept and made the walks very pleasant. there is a pool and hot tub next to the central restaurant which were added bonuses.

my husband and i booked a canyoning activity through the hotel. it was much more expensive than any of the other activities we paid for in other cities, but because this was our first activity we booked we didn't know that. we only got to canyon down 4 cliffs which we didn't feel was worth the money we spent (although the experience itself was great).

be careful about the cab rides as well. i would recommend asking how much the ride will be in advance so there are no surprises. the cab the hotel called for us ripped us off. the cab ride back (different cab) was half the price we paid for on the way to the restaurant we ate at for dinner. :(

Volcano Lodge was in a convenient location (especially if you have your own car). The drive from Liberia to Arenal/Fortuna was a little scary (unpaved roads, roads with mudslides, etc) but once we got to the Fortuna area, the roads were paved and you could get to downtown Fortuna in 5 mins. We had pre-arranged our activities (Pure Trek Canyoning, Desafio Water Rafting, Tabacon Hot Springs) but the front desk could also arrange them for you. The grounds were nice, beautiful landscaping, and the pools and hot tub were great after a long day of activities. The included breakfast was good (fresh fruit, yogurt, cereal, eggs, sausages, omelets made to order, etc. but the restaurant for dinner was nothing special. As far as the rooms, they were clean, the beds were comfortable and firm, had A/C (needed to be turned on to keep it cool), had tv with cable, a view of the volcano, and a balcony. The bathrooms were nice and relatively roomy. The only complaint about the room was it was a little dark. Service was prompt, our safe wasn't working and we were missing towels and they came within minutes. At reception, there are two computers with internet for guest use, as well as free wi-fi.

This was a pretty nice hotel. My biggest complaints were no water pressure in the shower and there was a weird smell in room. Considering you don't actually stay in the room for too long..it wasn't a big inconvenience. But for more than 2 nights that shower pressure would have become annoying.

We found the staff to be really polite and helpful. It was our first stop from the airport and Delta happened to forget one of our bags. The receptionists were very helpful in talking to the Delta staff to find out when we were receiving the bag since we don't speak Spanish.

The breakfast was great, the dinner at the same restaurant...not so much.

The gardens were beautiful!

  • Liked — Gardens, helpful front desk, free internet.
  • Disliked — Smell in room, Water pressure.

Great hotel for a family vacation and a good base for exploring the area. We stayed there for 3 nights around new year.
The hotel is clean and well-managed, has nice big rooms with two twin beds and a small terrasse. It also has two sets of pool areas, an efficient reception and free internet access for the hotel guests. The gardens are wonderful and we had a sloth eating and sleeping in a tree right outside our room.

  • Liked — It was quiet and beatifully kept. It was clean and neat everywhere, and the nature was just around the corner
  • Disliked — A bit far from the center of the town La Fortuna

We stayed at this hotel for two nights as part of our trip to Central America. The room was really nice and we especially liked the private patio with views of the volcano. There was satellite tv and although there was not wireless internet in our room (I guess it is available in some of the rooms), there was wireless in the lobby and both restaurants. We ate at the restaurant in the front of the hotel (Sura) one night and it was alright. The seafood entrees we ordered were very good but we did not care for the soup or appetizers we ordered. One thing we really like about the hotel was the breakfast buffet which was included in the price. It was a large spread of fruit, rice and beans, sausages, breads, made-to-order omelets, etc. - very tasty! The pool area was also very nice and had a swim-up bar. The hotel was well-located between the town of La Fortuna and the Arenal Volcano National Park. Would definitely recommend!

My partner and I stayed here for two days on the last leg of our belated honeymoon. This is perfectly adequate, upscale-ish place to stay in La Fortuna, but definitely nothing special for the price by Costa Rica standards. The grounds are indeed lovely, as many other reviewers pointed out, but we found our room to be small, dark and lacking in both cross-ventilation (only time on our trip when we had to use air-conditioning at night) and (more importantly) character. There is a view of the volcano from most of the rooms, but it is mostly of the inactive side (there is also a smallish slice of the active side visible). The hotel serves a nice breakfast that is included in the price, but when we tried one of the restaurants for dinner we were underwhelmed. Finally, the staff are perfectly pleasant, and will arrange activities in the area for you, but we actually found them to be relatively indifferent compared to the service we received at other hotels on our trip. Also, this was the only hotel at which we stayed that refused to cash traveller's checks, which required a trip into La Fortuna and a long wait at the local bank.

All of that said, the hotel is perfectly pleasant, particularly if you have a car to come and go as you please. It also has two very nice swimming pools, and seems particularly kid-friendly, so I think it would be an excellent option for a family-oriented vacation. Just nothing special in terms of a romantic get-away.

  • Liked — The grounds and nice swimming pools.
  • Disliked — Our room, which was dark and stuffy.
