“Great view of Volcano!”
Reviewed 12 April 2009

We stayed here for 2 nights last week. Our room had an amazing view of the volcano (I think all of the rooms have a view of the volcano). The grounds/gardens were maintained beautifully. We enjoyed the flowers and plants on our walks from the pool or breakfast to our room. The rooms themselves were adequate. Nothing fancy, but very comfortable. To be honest, we didn't even spend much time in our room between the hot springs, Cano Negro, the pool, and hiking. One weird thing... they have no clocks in the rooms. They have a TV (which our other hotels in Costa Rica did not have), but not a clock!

When looking for a place to stay around Arenal/Fortuna, my girlfriend and I looked for something centrally located, with views of Arenal volcano and all the basic amenities. What we really liked about the Volcano Lodge was the open layout, the pool and restaurant, and air conditioned rooms. The room, bathroom and restaurant were all very clean and everyone was very helpful and friendly. Our back door opened onto a landscaped yard with very comfortable chairs and a view of the volcano.

Nice cabins close to the Volcano and Arenal sights. Area surrounded by djungel. Lots of animals to watch right from the cabin.

We stayed here with two young kids, 4-year old and a baby as well as my husband, myself and our parents. Overall, I had no complaints about the property itself, the rooms were clean, the people were nice, the grounds were pretty, the food was ok. I can’t say I highly recommend this hotel, but considering the price, it is a fairly safe bet. The pool seemed nice but it was too cold for us to enjoy it. You can see the volcano from virtually all hotels in this area, this one is supposed to be on the wrong side to see lava flow. However, we did actually see a little lava during the day on the one clear day we had. We had a nice time here, I would recommend it, but if I were returning I would probably try a different place just to find out what else is out there.

I will add that I probably would have given this place four stars, but we did have one payment issue. Our airline moved our flight back a day and as a result we arrived a day late at the hotel. We called them as soon as we heard from the airline, but because it was so close to our arrival, they refused to refund the rooms. We had three rooms reserved, but they refused to even partially credit us for them. After repeated calls, they finally said if the rooms were reserved by someone else, they would issue the refund. When we arrived, we were virtually the only people at the property, so there was no chance those rooms would be booked. Also, given that we basically had the property to ourselves, I would have thought they could have put our rooms closer together. I think a four or five star resort would have better customer service.

This was not my first trip to Costa Rica, but my first trek to Arenal. Easy drive from Liberia Airport to Volcano Lodge, nevermind the windy mountainous roads and occassional mudslide, which are to be expected. It will take about 3.5 hours despite the distance, don't be fooled. Try to drive it in daylight if you can, as it is a gorgeous view. The Volcano Lodge has beautifully maintain grounds and everything is within walking distance. The rooms were immaculate and all the staff friendly and helpful. Very good English spoken by a majority of the staff. Take your earplugs if night noises bother you, as there is a loud-spoken cow nearby and the rains on the tin roofs sound like a heard of elephants, in a nice way. The pools and hottub are nice and the food is wonderful and reasonably priced. You can sit beside the pool in the morning for the buffet breakfast, fire up your internet, and also view the clouds receding from Arenal (if you're lucky). I recommend having a vehicle, as there is alot to see and do in the area and the resort is fairly isolated. La Fortuna, a small town a few miles away has the typical touristy attractions and also a decent Mega Super. An hour or two there, and you'll be done. If you plan to go to the Smithsonian Observatory Lodge, plan on taking your time, as it is the most pot-holed road I have ever encountered, bordering on ridulously funny. For this reason, I am so glad we didn't stay there! We are so happy that we spent four days at Volcano Lodge before returning to our addiction, the northern pacific coast, Ocotal area in Guanacaste.

all the rooms in this are spread over a good amount of area. my husband and i got there in the evening in the pouring rain. one of the staff members loaded a little covered cart with our luggage and drove us to our room which felt like it took forever (but the darkness and the rain had to do with that). the room itself was plain but very spacious and clean. in the morning when the rain had stopped, we took a nice walk to the restaurant for breakfast and then to the front office. the area is very well kept and made the walks very pleasant. there is a pool and hot tub next to the central restaurant which were added bonuses.

my husband and i booked a canyoning activity through the hotel. it was much more expensive than any of the other activities we paid for in other cities, but because this was our first activity we booked we didn't know that. we only got to canyon down 4 cliffs which we didn't feel was worth the money we spent (although the experience itself was great).

be careful about the cab rides as well. i would recommend asking how much the ride will be in advance so there are no surprises. the cab the hotel called for us ripped us off. the cab ride back (different cab) was half the price we paid for on the way to the restaurant we ate at for dinner. :(

Volcano Lodge was in a convenient location (especially if you have your own car). The drive from Liberia to Arenal/Fortuna was a little scary (unpaved roads, roads with mudslides, etc) but once we got to the Fortuna area, the roads were paved and you could get to downtown Fortuna in 5 mins. We had pre-arranged our activities (Pure Trek Canyoning, Desafio Water Rafting, Tabacon Hot Springs) but the front desk could also arrange them for you. The grounds were nice, beautiful landscaping, and the pools and hot tub were great after a long day of activities. The included breakfast was good (fresh fruit, yogurt, cereal, eggs, sausages, omelets made to order, etc. but the restaurant for dinner was nothing special. As far as the rooms, they were clean, the beds were comfortable and firm, had A/C (needed to be turned on to keep it cool), had tv with cable, a view of the volcano, and a balcony. The bathrooms were nice and relatively roomy. The only complaint about the room was it was a little dark. Service was prompt, our safe wasn't working and we were missing towels and they came within minutes. At reception, there are two computers with internet for guest use, as well as free wi-fi.
