“Nice rooms, resort feel. Good for relaxation, not ideal for adventurers.”
Reviewed 28 April 2009

Arenal Volcano Inn is a great spot - provided you know ahead of time exactly what you're looking for in a hotel in La Fortuna. If you're looking for a little R&R while in La Fortuna, then this spot is perfect. It has a nice pool, hot tub, and full restaurant (and even a spa) on location. The rooms are clean and big, each one a fully detached "cabin" with it's own bench outside the main door facing the volcano.
The downside is that this hotel is a good 7km outside of La Fortuna, and is literally on the side of the highway. Meaning you won't be walking anywere - the hotel is pretty isolated. Which is ok if that is what you're after. But if you're looking to be able to walk around town, go to the grocery store, explore on foot, etc - then you need to first take a 10 min taxi into town.
We found that for our liking, the hotel had too much of a "all-inclusive" feel. The meals are all big buffets, served by waiters in uniforms. Again - this is not nessecarily a negative (would be a big plus to some people) but wasn't ideal for us. That said - the front desk staff is super friendly and able to help book any day trips you want (all trips will pick you up at the hotel free of charge). On that note - book through a local tour operator, as opposed to directly through the suggested tours you get in the hotel binder - there are more options available through outside agencies.
Overall - it is a very nice hotel - perfect for those looking to relax and enjoy the gorgeous view of Arenal volcano outside of your bedroom window. But if you're more the adverturous type - look closer to town.

Really wonderful stay - clean, comfy rooms, great staff who helped us arrange lots of trips, a nice restaurant with lots of choice for breakfast and a cracking view of the volcano. Lovely grounds with howler monkeys, toucans and hummingbirds on site. Would highly recommend - a perfect holiday.
As an aside, Arenal is much nicer than Monteverde!

We have really nice stay at Arenal Volcano Inn, the room was very clean, the breakfast was delicious.
we had a great hike in the Volcano Park, too bad the top of the Volcano was cover by the cloud, so we didn't see the lava coming down, but we heard the rumbling sound.

We had a deluxe room (only about $5 more a night than the standard) and it was our own individual hut with two beds. The rooms were spacious and clean, including the bathroom. AVI is located in between Lake Arenal and La Fortuna, so right in the center of the action. We were not able to take advantage of the pool or hot tub, but they looked nice and clean as well.

Cesar, the General Manager, was very helpful in arranging transportation (the hotel's shuttle) at the end of our trip from the La Fortuna to San Jose. The cost was only $120 for private transport; much cheaper than other options we looked into. Plus, the driver picked us up in town with our luggage already loaded and ready to go! The other staff were helpful as well. Breakfast is included in the rate and was filling and tasty.

We stayed for a couple days in the Arenal area to see and hike the volcano. Arenal Volcano Inn was a small but nice facility. The facility has a number of separate bungalows with high wood ceilings. All the bungalows face the volcano with a small front porch. I enjoyed sitting on the front porch in the early mornings and reading a book as tons of bird life darted by.

The staff was friendly and the restaurant was wonderfully open with beautiful plants and more birds. I appreciated the help of Margarita from the front-desk in signing up for excursions and getting us a taxi to go in and visit the nearby town of La Fortuna ($5).

They have a small but nice pool and hot tub. We did not take advantage of it as we were generally out hiking but it was inviting.

La Fortuna has tons of hotels every where. We chose this hotel because it seemed clean and got decent reviews from TripAdvisor. My husband and I stayed here two nights in the deluxe room. The room was clean, but we couldn't open the windows so our room smelled musty, which was not good for my husband who has allergies.

Staff was helpful, especially Clareth, who got our cabs to the Volcano as well as booking the Skytram for zip lines.

The hotel is a little secluded, so your options for food are limited to the restaurant. Breakfast is included and it had a decent variety. Depending on your choice, the food can be good or not so good (we didn't dig their pizza).

You can get to La Fortuna in a cab (reception will call a cab for you), but there isn't much to do in La Fortuna. If you get to town, pick up many large bottles of water, as the hotel only sells a small bottle for $2 each.

The biggest draw is the Volcano, and unfortunately when we were there, we didn't see the volcano in full view as it was cloudy and it rained the next day. We did do the hike on our own and heard the rumblings of a volcano.

Skytram zip lining is really fun as you get to do 8 zip lines across the wooded area. You can also opt to do a hike if zip lining is not your thing.

Overall, this hotel is a good place to stay for a couple of days as the rates are reasonable and the staff is friendly and helpful.
